Hi everyone.
The names wallis. This is my first ever thread no this forum, and its quite exciting
actualy.I am so looking forward to this game next year. It will also be my very first MMO game(And the first star trek ship game that actualy looks like the battles in the shows.) Everyone on
here seems pretty hyped about the game to witch is cool for a star trek game.
Any how, sorry for waffling, a bit of advice. I will be getting a new Alienware auroa 7500 pc soon for xmas ( or a dell xps ) and was wondering if it
would be able to run this game at full spec. When i say full spec i mean around 1040 res with the graphic settings on high.
I know the official specs havent been reaveald yet, and people on this forum are saying it will be similar to Champions Online, so I was gonna get it to test. Im realy just buying a pc to play this to be honest, and I wana play it with all graphical setting on high.
So yeah thats it realy. Looking forward to my first replay. Take care all.....and see you
all in 2010.
NOTE: My spelling is aufull by the way.

Welcome to the forums! (HA! Take that Peregrine)
If you're getting a new Alienware I'd guess you could, but 1040 isn't a standard res so you may want to elaborate on that a bit.
If you ask around really nicely someone may be willing to give you a trial key for Champions so you can try it out :)
Ok, the first thing you have to understand is that the brand of the machine doesn't really mean that much. Alienware Aurora 7500 and Dell XPS are just brand names and product ranges. Dell XPS refers to a whole bunch of machines, including both desktops and laptops.
It's a better idea to post the actual specifications of the machines you're looking at, so we can advise you. But generally speaking, if the computers you're considering can meet the recommended specs of Champions, you should be ok.
If in doubt, go for more RAM and a better graphics card, versus a better processor. The former two matter more.

Great advice. Worth repeating. a better graphics card, more RAM, better processors.

Right ok then. As far as i can remember it had this sli nvidia graphics card.and i believe it was a 1gb card. And to clarify on the resoulution i ment 1040 by 740 i think it is. I just want a pc that will be able to play this game at a reasonable res, and with the graphic settings on high, because i have noticed evrytime we get a new screenshot the game looks better and better. Its the first time iv wanted a star trek game that bad, and also it could be the best star trek game....Ever. Many thanks peeps.

By any chance do you remember the actual series numbers on the card? For instance, were you looking at an older GeForce 9600 series, or one of the newer GTS cards? It does make a huge difference.
But really if it's a current top of the line Alienware or Dell you probably don't have to worry. MMOs almost never push the bleeding edge of computer hardware requirements. So if you can't remember and can't find that info again, I sincerely doubt you have to worry.

If you want info on if it can run the game, specs certainly help, as it has been said before.
As for alienware vs. dell, get a dell. Alienwares are technically dells, but the quality is just horribly sub-par, whilst the standard dell XPS or Precision series are excellent machines.

dell owns alienware, they are all manufactured south east asia. They sold off the USA plants in 2008. Your getting the same quality stuff. ( its decent stuff) i give them that, they have good end of buisness and home user laptops. But as far as game machines go I'm always comfortable building my own.

Welcome!
I wouldn't worry so much about your computer, it will do fine. If you want max resultion while simultaneously recording using FRAPS or anything like that, then spend the extra money for it.
When are they gonna offer us an LCARS keyboard to buy? Seriously.

There are some minor differences, but technically yes, they are very similar. It's just the construction or testing of Alienwares is pitiful. I work in IT and we deal totally in Dell, everyone has a Dell, and all the Dell alienwares that were supposed to be "awesome" (we have an idiot running IT, who decided to buy them), are broken, messed up, useless buggy piles whose only purpose in life is constructing a fortress around my cubicle.
I know there the same things built in the same place, but I've come to the conclusion that either Alienware is too seperate from dell and messing up, Dell is purposefully killing the name, or trying to make them so "cool" is having a bad effect on the overall quality.
And yes, building your own desktop is better, and generally cheaper. I love my custom machine, but the OP did not seem to have the technical know how to construct a custom. So I didn't bother with the point.

Thanks very much guys for your help anyhow, realy aprerciate it. I might go for a Dell xps at the ebnd
of the day, only cus there cheap. (the good lady dosnt like the idea of me spending nearly £2K for a decent PC.lol.)
As long as this game runs smoothe and looks good, Im happy. I might need to start another thread tho cus my next bit of advice is actualy about the big expanding mmo world.
As im a new commer to these sorts of games, are they easy to play. I mean..from some people
when they talk about griding, loot,PVP,PVE and so on and so forth im like......well I feel just like B4 did
at the end of Nemesis.lol.
Any advice again guys would be wikked, and if you want me to start a new topic then I shall.
Many thanks.

Dell XPS and Alienware PC's are both branded as performance machines for gaming. I went for a browse on their sites and as I thought, there really aren't any PC's that wouldn't run STO available. The only non-gaming oriented machines are laptops.
You really can't go wrong there (except for the price)

STO or Champions Online on high graphic settings, and a reasonable resouloution. Most of you asked what sort of specs the pc was, so here is a copy of the specs of the PC im getting. I chose to get a Dell XPS 625 in the end. many thanks

My advice is don't BUY a built rig ... find someone you trust, and build your own. You can match the machine for half the price, or build twice the machine for the same price.
I haven't bought a built box in close to 20 years ... and barring anything unforeseen, I'll never buy a built box again.

Everything looks good, just a few things:
-Wait for about 10 days before getting it, then you can get Windows 7. I'm running win 7 on everything already, and it's really nice. (does it come out on the 22nd for Europe?)
-I'd advise you to use a 64-bit OS (either 7 or Vista, preferably 7), and move the ram up to 8 gigs. Ram is relatively cheap, might as well get it all now rather than later. It'll make a HUGE difference. Either way, go with a 64-bit os even if you don't up the ram, it will simply be more efficient.

Absolutely. I fully support those recommendations. Wait for Windows 7. Running Vista is an experience similar to electrocuting a hog into running around a track. Windows 7 runs even leaner than XP, go figure.
6GB of RAM is fine for systems with triple-channel memory, otherwise 8GB is good for systems with dual-channel memory. You really won't use much more than 4GB if your video card has tons of memory (Windows uses system RAM to cache textures, aka "memory virtualization"). So if you have less than 800 or so MB of video memory, you might use the 6 or 8GB with the highest texture cache settings in games. Usually 64-bit runs slower on PCs, but for Windows 7, the 64-bit kernel is faster. That surprised me when I read it.

lol, intriguing. as with vista,, most people i know have a not very "efficient" experience. I recently upgraded and decided to keep my Win Xp home. Much to the chagrin of the tech guy,, who is always opinionated and on the bleeding edge...
I am one of those people seriously thinking of just keeping XP as long as i possibly can. But hey maybe i will start reading into windows 7.
Cheers!

Yup, I was a die-hard XP keeper too. I avoided Vista like the plague, due to its bloated-ness (compared to XP), its licensing (much worse than previous Windows versions), and its different drive schema.
But after 7 went into Release Candidate, and after hearing so many good things about 7, I tried it. I still run the RC-1 since it's rock solid. I'm quite impressed. It runs everything, all the games I have, and does so without complaints. It took me a little while to get used to it (network configuring is still annoying, but manageable). I've never seen a Windows beta or release candidate this stable in all of Microsoft's history.
They really got their act together with 7.

If in doubt, figure out what you need before you buy anything. For example, after about 4gb (perhaps less), more RAM isn't really going make the game run any better. Similarly, a better video card won't improve things much, if at all, if your CPU is already at 100%. Sometimes, it really is the CPU that is holding you back, especially at higher resolutions. Buying random hardware and throwing it into your machine is seldom a good way to upgrade.

use this and just ask it for Champions online they have confirmed that they are going to have a system that will scale down but they want it comparable to that game so if you can run one logic serves to tell us that you can run the other.

If in doubt, figure out what you need before you buy anything. For example, after about 4gb (perhaps less), more RAM isn't really going make the game run any better.
It depends. In general, a 32-bit game like STO won't use more than 2GB of system RAM. At the same time, though, STO can use the same amount of video RAM, and an O/S such as Vista or Windows 7 with DX10/DX11 can use "memory virtualization" to use available system memory for texture caching. This helps for lower end and mid-level video cards, but not so much for top-end cards with plenty of memory. The problem for us with STO is that the game will be using DX9 and is a 32-bit application. So all of that won't matter.
So for STO, anything above about 3GB of RAM won't be utilized at launch. This leaves 2GB or less for the game and 1GB or so for the OS. Unless of course people want to multi-task with other memory-intensive applications, lol. And even at 2GB for STO you're covered and it will run just fine.
