From the Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/star-trek-online-interview_9?page=1) article:
Craig Zinkievich: We are taking beta applications now, and started taking them at the beginning of September. We are, um, just on the doorstep of going into closed beta. I don't know if it's alpha, but we do have people outside of the company already playing the game. We're in the home-stretch in terms of developing the game. We're definitely moving into the lock-down and feedback stage. It's really, really exciting.
There you have it folks!

Well, it depends on when the interview took place. I'd say maybe sometime last week, based on what I know about interview turn-arounds. So maybe 1-2 weeks from now.

I was just pointing it out for everyone's edification, and to hopefully get some positive behavior happening. A positive, excited discussion would be good for this forum.
But, I forgot, since you already "know" this, everyone else does as well. Its not like we all have individual minds, and have lives and miss pieces of info. Its not like people aren't flawed, and will miss something.
I apologize for my mistake.

Stop teasing. No date? Speculation still?
Ughh.
This has probably been brought up by someone in every MMO forum in history so I feel it is my duty not to break the chain of the following comment:
I hope that there will be some explanation from "someone" during BETA giving non-BETA players an idea of gameplay, confirmations on several of the basic questions, and general items that will not be changed due to BETA testing.
Just so that we have some kind of feel while we wait for game launch. :D

Does that mean it is a conspiracy? People outside of America won't be allowed in because we don't celebrate Pilgrims? This is worse than when the FBI created gravity to stop us going into space :(

Colonel Sandurz: Now. You're looking at now, sir. Everything that happens now, is happening now.
Dark Helmet: What happened to then?
Colonel Sandurz: We passed then.
Dark Helmet: When?
Colonel Sandurz: Just now. We're at now now.
Dark Helmet: Go back to then.
Colonel Sandurz: When?
Dark Helmet: Now.
Colonel Sandurz: Now?
Dark Helmet: Now.
Colonel Sandurz: I can't.
Dark Helmet: Why?
Colonel Sandurz: We missed it.
Dark Helmet: When?
Colonel Sandurz: Just now.
Dark Helmet: When will then be now?
Colonel Sandurz: Soon.
Dunno why, but that quote just seemed appropriate :D

As with all game developers, from the statements I got from the interviewee, I got the impression of "Soon" as well. I believe there's another thread somewhere dedicated to defining the different degrees of Cryptic Soons.

Cryptic's famous - or should that be infamous? - for their use of "Soon (tm)"
All that said, the Eurogamer article revealed that Cryptic's already in the friends and family stage of testing.
That's pretty big. They're already letting folks they know have a crack at testing the game.

I might not have been a huge trek fan as well. had a TNG era Halloween costume as a kid, and a phaser, oh and a toy that was the Enterprise-D that was the normal version but could change into the Admiral Riker one from the series finale.
Speaking of the TNG Series Finale enterprise... i wonder if we can make our Galaxy classes like that.

I think he means the phase 2 closed beta that applications are being accepted for. the "friends and family" closed beta is phase 1.

If you read through the Eurogamer interview that was posted today...Craig says that they already have people outside of the company playing STO!
Craig Zinkievich: "We are taking beta applications now, and started taking them at the beginning of September. We are, um, just on the doorstep of going into closed beta. The beta has been coming "soon" since August. If I remember correctly they had people outside of the company (family etc) playing back in August. At this rate, "on the doorstep" of beta and "definitely this year" means December 31st.
I get it, they're "Cryptic." But it's still a little ridiculous how tight-lipped their PR is.
Although to be fair, I'm really more exasperated with the MMO industry in general than Cryptic themselves.

All they do is hurt themselves hiding the information on STO. I mean its publicity, which is free advertisement in a sense. Its a win/win unless the content they want to disclose is poorly thought out.

If you read this quote properly as written it is in present tense, not past...and since this interview took place after PAX I would take this statement to mean something other than the specially made demo for PAX.

Right, which means they are in alpha, which they have most likely been in for months already.

Besides, also, the PAX demo was exactly that. A "demo". It wasn't the actual game, and seemed to be pre-programmed for PAX.

Alot of game companies let friends/family test games before the "public" closed beta begins.
