A very long and cool interview is up!
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/star-trek-online-interview_9?page=1
Beware, Klingon fans should approach with caution.
Some great stuff in there though.
Excerpts:
"Cryptic's been developing its Star Trek MMO somewhat quietly while superhero stablemate Champions Online stole the limelight. It was only at gamescom back in August that we got our first proper look at the game, and very illuminating it was too. Now that Champions is out in the wild, though, Cryptic is ready to start dishing the dirt in detail on a game that could be out sooner than you think. We called up executive producer Craig Zinkievich to talk Klingons, betas, consoles, random content generation and finding people in chests. Or something."
----------------------------
And more importantly:
"Craig Zinkievich: The Klingon gameplay will unlock, but not deep in the game - it will take several hours to unlock the ability to create a Klingon player."
Enjoy a great read!

Best thing to do is not to go "zomgwthhaxxorz" about all this. I'm sure that things will be great, if Cryptic has a good story for us about why this sudden unexpected development came into being.
I know I'd rather hear it from them on the site then from an interview.
But i'm sure we'll hear plenty more were that all came from.

"There has been no direct affect in terms of... If I was to take the hardcore executive producer stance, then I've lost no work cycles. The really cool thing is, though, that everything they find - every core instability, any backend tools - is immediately inherited by the Star Trek project, because we use the same core engine. Any issue that Champions has found, Star Trek automatically gets fixed. It's almost as if our core technology has already launched. So I guess that's affected us a little bit - it's eased my mind! And it's doing awesome"
I like that :)
Edit: I also like the confirmation of Early 2010, and not "July" 2010 :D. This game has an amazing amount of potential.

OK THIS IS ADW and i will stop people worrying about this thing being took out of context which is happening.
From this interview with Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/star-trek-online-interview_9?page=1):
Eurogamer: "You mentioned unlock earlier - are the Klingons going to be available from the start?"
Craig Zinkievich (Executive Producer of Star Trek Online): "The Klingon gameplay will unlock, but not deep in the game - it will take several hours to unlock the ability to create a Klingon player. "
So everyone MUST start off playing as a Starfleet officer before they can play as a Klingon. I'm not sure how I feel about that, or why they choose to do it that way.
How do all of you Klingon players feel about this new announcement?
Actually Federation players take an hour and a half before they can get a Bo and a ship in space. Dont rush things, Klingons will be Klingons, its just there academy process is different from ours. Im sure this is what they mean. It has been said by many including J Everett that Klingons and Feds are available from the get go.
Craig Zinkievich: At launch there will only be two playable factions.
As said there will be two, just there is a few things you must do before you actually get your character and your ship, the feds takes at least 1.5hours, from Zinc earlier in the year and the Klingons looks to be several hours, possible as there is a lot more house to house combat, and scenarios, far more than the Feds have to deal with.
We will both get our side and our own faction, just we wont get the keys to the ship instantly, theres a few hoops to do first.
:D
Craig Zinkievich: Oh yeah, definitely. As we developed the game we made a list of all the races, all the different factions people want to play: the Romulan Star Empire, the Cardassians will come back - there's a huge number who want to play as them, but not within the Star Fleet, not within the Federation. So, plenty of different factions that can be and will be added after launch.
Been telling people for months and months lol. And also two sides join against the other two as well :p mark my words lol. Youll see soon enough lol. :p
If a fourth post is made ill recomment to the devs its closed as its rumour mongoring and not needed, AND if you read THERE IS KLINGONS FROM THE GET GO, you should believe me, as i know there is!

You have to unlock feds too, both sides have hoopes to jump through Captain, some are less hassle than others, i.e. the feds dont have house to house politics to worry about.
But if people read this and understand they will get there faction but just wont get it instantly either will anybody, then they dont need to panick and can be comforted in knowing theres just things to do first !

You should know better than to re post a thread already posted by two other people,
2 Things:
1) He posted first
2) This thread is generally about the interview while the others are about klingons.

All it means is that you go through a tutorial...then get to choose. At least that is my understanding, much like CO (except much of your character creation would be after a tutorial). Still, it is sounding very polished even before the beta test!

No, you dont have to unlock them...you have to a character created to enter the game, so...you create a Fed first, do the tutorial, then get the ability to create a klingon.

Lets not let this community end up like COs. There was peace and love over there too until the nerf patches...then everyone forgot about the peace and love very quickly :)
I really really hope that doesnt happen over here too.

I guess the panic ends as soon as one of the Devs is saying something. :)
What do you say to the second pic in the interview. Is it just a normal Intrepid with a black hull or is it one of the variants? It's a bit edgy for a normal intrepid and the warp engines don't seem to be right for me too. But maybe only modifications. :)

Hehe, im trying Captain lol,
Its just hard when you actualy cant tell people anything .. but the fact its gonna be great, i geuss im asking for a leap of faith but its well worth the leap.
The Very last thing i want is to have to forums full of flaming and trolling, its not a good thing. AND misconceptions of things are not great. Remember the team are all fluey and ill just now(hoping they all get better soon as possible) , what Zinc said and the way it was meant arent as straight forward as people think.

I'm pretty sure he was referring to Fed faction's ability to play as a Klingon race. You can understand why the Devs wouldn't want too much bleed through between factions.
I blame the interviewer. He/she didn't get the two faction thing. I mean come on "Do you get to play as Klingon?"
Eurogamer: I see! And forgive my ignorance, but can I be a Klingon?
Craig Zinkievich: Yes! We plan on shipping with the ability to play as Federation and play on the Klingon side. The Klingon gameplay is going to be drastically different to the Federation gameplay. It's going to be a lot more focused on PvP; their advancement is a little bit different - it is not a full-on story-driven game like the Federation.
Eurogamer: You mentioned unlock earlier - are the Klingons going to be available from the start?
Craig Zinkievich: The Klingon gameplay will unlock, but not deep in the game - it will take several hours to unlock the ability to create a Klingon player.

This sounds ridiculous, in my opinion. Klingons should be able to just start up straight away as a Klingon, rather than forcing all players to go through Federation gameplay first. So much for equal factions  and Klingons should also get access to episodic content, after all, they explore space just like the Fed, and would get into similar problems.
And who hasn't wanted to be that Klingon that told Sulu the Empire didn't need any help after Praxis went boom? Perfect time travel mission :p
