View Full Version : Ventral and Dorsal Shields

I've been watching the gameplay, trailers and videos. One thing that eludes me is why they wouldn't put Ventral and Dorsal shields on the ships. Its obviously VERY canon. How could something like that get overlooked? Is the 2D/3D environment to blame? What do we do to fix it?

i noticed that as well.
i think to keep things simple and to keep the interface from getting muddled they're gonna keep it at those 4 sheilds

Yes... less math for them lol. Not to mention it would be distracting to have the top view of your ship flashing every time it got hit. They just kept it clean.

This has been discussed thoroughly on the forums. Many people have had your same concerns.
Cryptic's response has been... cryptic, hahaa (sorry, I had to). In all seriousness, their response has been 'just wait till you play it. it will all make sense then'. So there must be a reason that they felt leaving dorsal and ventral shielding out despite their inability to communicate while. I guess we will figure out why later when its been installed on our computers and we're combating every alien species we encounter in order to level up and reach admiral. Yikes, where did that come from!
Anyway yea, they didn't miss that, they intentionally left them out, for reasons we will yet discover. Perhaps someone who has played the game at PAX can give us their insight.

It is indeed a worry, one that has got many people making posts before, and were hoping that STO have the shields more visibly seen by launch, there in the Noodling stages of many things just now, lets hope shields are one of them !

My guess, if we take out the "Its easier on Cryptic and easier on the player", then I would look at it as 4 quadrants sliced through a sphere. So that the power going to the shields is distributed throughout that slice. If it is a dorsal hit, the power shifts there. Same with ventral. Now if BOTH are hit, then you have to distribute power evenly from the rest of your shields, which we have seen demonstrated in some of the videos.
Should we have vent or dorsal shields, I think so. But for game play mechanics, it will be easier on all of us that we don't.

They DID mention somewhere about it being a 2D environment model. While you can fly above or below a ship for tactical purposes, there's only going to be shields that cover the four sides.
