View Full Version : Character video last official vid?

So after raiding youtube and finding a heap of PAX vids, is it true the last official video was back in Feb over 6 months ago? And in terms of actual game play, we haven't seen one since this whole shindig was announced?
I watched some video presentation that looked like it was put together for a presentation, but it was only ever filmed, never officially released (think it was taken at a convention, the one where a rep is speaking over it). Wonder when we will receive the next official video?
Any updates been said about this lately?

Their has been mention of a new offical vid "soon" but I get the impression that there might be a few problems, probably with the PR dept.
Still When its done I'm sure we'll all be frothing at the mouth ;)

That's the one department that Cryptic (mostly their PR) has dropped the ball on. There are tons of YouTube videos from PAX and Gamescom they should be linking in the official videos section here, but they aren't. I've said it before and I'll say it again, it looks bad when you only have two videos out in over a year.

It's a little disheartning not having any official videos when we are apparently so close to closed beta. And especially for all the players that would love to see the other half to this game, being the Klingons.
Don't get me wrong, I think Cryptic are great being so in with the community, I still have nightmares about Perpetuals once every 6 month updates...It's just we need to see somthing concrete. Surely something can be whacked together.

There have been other videos out there of in game space combat. I don't want to really go into it just in case it is not allowed on here. But there is nothing to worry about at all from what I've seen :)

Yes but like funnystuffz has said, this is a little worrying that there have been no "Official" vids for people to look at. For a game that is preparing for Beta this year, there really should be some sort of vid for us to look at. I mean Old Republic has released several in game videos to keep the fanbase attracted and to bring in more would be customers. For an IP as big as Star Trek, you'd think that they'd be pushing screens, vids and trailers all over. The PR on this game has been a little poor in some respects, if it wasn't for new screen shots every now and then, I might not be here as often as I am, which is a shame because I do like following the progress of this MMO and I can't wait for it.

I made a post not long ago about providing more information to startrek online, which would have included adding the demos and such from gamescon and whatnot. Its official videos that was never really given to the public other than some 3rd rate over the shoulder perspective.
Their PR department needs to understand the importance of the website now, and not after its launched. Look at SWTOR, which is being released like 1/2 a year later than STO and it has mountains more video related and screenshot content on its website.

I agree, SWTOR won't be out for another year easy, yet it gives off the impression of being just around the corner. STO while it looks impressive in the screens we've seen, we all know that screen shots are nothing for actual game footage. I'd like to see this game in action before I'd consider paying a monthly fee for it. I mean it is only fair Cryptic are asking us to pay around £30 for this game plus another £10 per month (rough guesses based on other mmos), for a game that we've only seen very attractive pictures of.

I agree that they need a new video soon as well. Especially when you look at the screenshots and compare them to the videos. The character skins look so much better now than they did months ago. The ship combat looks a lot better as well.

That's the thing. Imagine no video being released, closed beta begins, and all the unfortunate souls who don't get in and are still in the dark.
If they were able to release the first official teaser video, near a year ago, then surely they must be able to get clearance to release another. It's great seeing videos filmed at PAX, and conventions etc, but they all often show just the one thing, and it being very hard to see.
It would be good to see an in depth video.
A great idea would be to release fortnightly videos on different aspects of the game. Combat, exploring, trading, ships, tiers, klingon pvp, trade, skill set etc. Hell even snippets of these all in the one video.
Surely Cryptics PR department understand that it is time for us to see something official. I'm sure investors are happy with what they are seeing with videos sent to them, so how about now passing on something to the consumers.
I don't want to be a nancy about the issue, it's just 1 actual gameplay trailer within 12 months, doesn't really cut it when we are meant to be so close to closed beta. This game is hyped up, to continue the hype, keep us excited!

The thing is that they had a video that should have been released by now, but according to Rekhan, there were "problems" with it. Whether that means PR problems or not was never disclosed. But once they fix whatever these problems are, we will have that video.

I mean PR people have got to realise that there are many people out there who are both Star Trek and Star Wars fans and they might not or dont want to pay for both games, they may not have time to play both. And these people will see STO putting up a few pics here and there and SWTOR throwing vids up all over the place, its not hard to figure out that they'll lean towards the one who looks as if they are making progress and that they can see the game. Lets not forget that SWTOR is using the mass effect style of gameplay so people who have played ME know how it will play, and dedicated fans to SWTOR will go and buy ME to see how SWTOR will handle. Leaving STO at a massive disadvantage.

Well to be fair, Cryptic has pretty much been spamming MMO sites with unique pics. So to say "here and there" doesn't do them justice.

Well it does really, I've not seen all these sites that have these pictures on them. I've only seen the few that has been on the news pages recently. But why should I then go to these mmo sites when the mmo site I am interested in is this one? It still doesn't change the fact that it has been almost a year since an official video was launched.

I think what he may also mean in another term. The only other game we could compare with Cryptic as of right now is Champions Online. That being a very poor and bad example for the type of gameplay we would want to expect in STO.

That was my argument in my other post about the site providing more information. This is my main site for STO information. Why am I being delegated everywhere else and why are these screenshots that originated from Cryptic not on Cryptics site yet? Even if it was an exclusive, it should eventually make its way back here or PR is simply doing a lousy job.

I had mentioned this a while back,
No new videos on the website
We have to go to 3rd party websites to get more then 1 screenshot a week, MMO.com. Zam.com, TTH, the list goes on, Sure their exclusive but what about the ones from a few months ago
I mean if I showed a friend who hasn't followed the game for a while, I'll have to go over like 13 other websites to get the needed screens and videos, Now how does that look on this forum?, the fact the informations not there, it looks poor and sloppy on Cryptics part, after all first impressions are the only impressions people are willing to make

It's great to be spamming pics to anyone and everyone who wants them. But pics only tell and show so much. As I said before, don't get me wrong. Going from Perpetual's community involvement to Cryptics is like comparing an Australian in the outback to an Eskimo.
We want to see the actual game dynamics. We want to see all these answers to our questions actually in action. I am almost certain that once a video is released, the game will seem that much more real, and hype will be at it's all time highest.

Most of those pictures make it to this site anyway ecentually. The information is available and there is a lot of it. So no, saying they do not provide us with content does not do Cryptic any justice at all. They have been getting the word out to the majority of MMO players. Use the search function instead of posting anti-Cryptic nonsense. Also, as I have already stated, they did in fact make a video and we would have already had it by now. There were just complications.

I very much agree. Pictures only tell a fraction of what a video can do. Which I am sure, is why they made another video.

It's okay that their were complications, but surely it wouldn't be that hard to fix. In all the recent interviews, Cryptic states that closed beta is just around the corner. Well, in my experience in marketing, it's time to pump up PR and get what this game is starting to look like out to it's potential consumers.
Whatever the complications are, or whatever the reasons, it's time to get it out so we can all see something, visually, which has been discussed for the past 12 months.
You can't drop the ball on these kinds of things. It might just be around the corner, and the complications may be that features in the video are no longer being used, but how easy is it to edit it out?
Show us something. We understand the game is being worked on, we will wait for our opportunity to play the beta, until then, pics can only do so much.

I agree. Editing would only take a few hours to realign theme music and such. Which is why I suspect that the complications were PR complications.

More than likely, seeing as the PAX video (as low quality as they are) do show the game in a working capacity. We can only assume that this is a RP related issue or a dissagrement over what they want to show.
