View Full Version : Holidays in Star Trek?

Most MMOs have in-game special events and holidays that correspond to real world holidays.
Now that I think about it, I don't think I ever remember any reference to any holidays at all in Star Trek, not real ones at least.
So will we see like, an orion pirate named Grench that stole a freighter full of children's toys and we must get them back or anything like that? ;)
Would all the super nerds cry that it hurts your immersion to have such events or could you lower your canon-shields long enough to enjoy something just for fun a few times a year?

Yeah, I hope they are still planning on doing holiday stuff. I don't know my canon well enough to state which holidays are celebrated in Trek (I'm sure someone else can), but I'd like to maybe get a snowball launcher during Christmas time like Eve does lol. Or, you know, something else for Halloween, etc. I'm looking forward to what Cryptic comes up with myself.

I hope no resources go to things like holidays. I would rather all art resources go towards creating new worlds and civilizations to discover and all writing resources going towards episodic story driven content.

Totally gonna wear a klingon mask for halloween
Also, I think things like holidays are good because they break up your every day routine to add something different. Keeps things interesting and also helps remind people that there is a real world outside of the game and that sometimes they should turn it off and experience it.
I think one of the many reasons World of Warcraft has done so well is the fact it doesn't take it's self too seriously. It has a great story imbedded in it, lots of great content to fight through, and it still has time to make real world references just to relate to it's playerbase and get a laugh out of them or just share a little fun.

While it would not bother me if there were no holidays, I would be fine with it. What I would love more then anything would be to put a Santa hat on my ship, or have one of my bridge crew members transformed into a reindeer and I have to find a cure.
The Santa hat though...all the way. If I was good with photo shop I'd do it right now.
I suspect STO will have holiday events. Is there any MMO that does not? Then again, they might have to get their events approved by Paramount and who knows how they will feel about replacing your saucer section with a Jack-O-Lantern.

What if you didn't want to cure them because they are just too cute? :D

Well we know that Christmas was in Generations.
Voyager had several holidays like Federation day and Vulcan Holidays.
DS9 had Bajorian Holidays.
And of course the various Klingon Holidays.

While I hope that Cryptic makes STO a solid game BEFORE they put any effort into making special holiday events, I'd like to see them in the game eventually. They've twisted the holiday names to fit into WoW, they could do it again for STO.
Wouldn't it be hilarious to put some Christmas lights on your ship's hull just for Christmas Day? I don't think that's going too far. Heck, you know there would be so awesome events going on at Quark's for ANY holiday. More celebration means more profit!

Christmas was in Star Trek - Generations, so when December 25th rolls around there sure as heck better be a Christmas season in-game on some Federation planets (if not just Earth) because we know it is celebrated in the 24th & 25th centuries still.
And no, I won't accept Holiday as the title of Christmas or Christmas Trees, wiki the origins of Christmas.

Christmas was mentioned in the original series (Kirk relates a story of how he met a lady at the science lab Christmas party on the Enterprise). And it's referred to not as Holiday but as "Christmas" ... so there is cannon support for keeping the name.
And to add in my own suggestions, why not celebrate the founding of the federation or observe Starfleet's (of the KDF) version of Veteran's Day.

i'd love that if your main character or BO's are of a specific race, when that races holidays come around, i would love to be able to do specific quests for them... :)

In Star Trek ToS episodes "Dagger of the Mind", Lt. Helen Noel specifically mentions to the Captain meeting him at the Christmas party that was held aboard ship.
In Star Trek TNG, I can't find the episode, but they have a Halloween party onaboard the ship.
They also have birthday parties aboard ship in almost all of the episodes. And I would think that New Years Eve and Federation Day (or whatever it's called) would be celebrated as well.

I can't see a problem with it, a lot of games call it a veteran gift, it can be a gift, or just a quest with a nice reward (say a custom badge or something) another option is just a minor change in the uniform (like a santa hat instead of the badge previously mentioned for example).

Zinc says quite clearly, in the Hailing Freqeuncy vids, with Lord Tamgros that there will be yearly events coinciding with the seasons etc. So this is definatly going to happen.
At easter there might be find the eggs around the solor system kind of thing lol, i bet ones behind Saturn !
