View Full Version : Nebula Class MIA?

I have noticed that the nebula class ship is missing from the ships of the line list. I was hoping to have one before I got my Galaxy class. There great at DPS... at least in ST Legacy. Hopefully we will see this ship added in the future as the list is not complete yet. Then again maybe I'm the only one who loves the look of them. They can look pretty intimidating flying in groups as well lol. With any luck a DEV will pop in here and tell us that they will be in game at some point :)

Nebula wasn't the only familiar name MIA from the announced list; Excelsior, Ambassador, and Cheyenne were also nowhere to be found.
However there are ships in the list with similar-ish names (Envoy, Dakota, etc.) that leads one to believe that perhaps these old favorites may have simply been refit and renamed.

Either the Sol or Polaris in the tier 4 science group is probably a refitted Nebula.

I wouldn't think so. Ask Cryptic from Feb. 19th puts the Nebula class as "advanced science."
People will be able to look at someone’s ship and say, “Hey, that’s like a Nebula, so I know it’s an advanced science vessel”
source (http://startrekonline.com/node/176)
And Nebula is very similar to the Luna in configuration.

The Luna class is a funny ship (at least, as portrayed in the Titan series). She's more or less an Akira/Sovereign hybrid by hull design, and is between the two in size as well. She may look a little like a Nebula in some ways, but she's very different, and for that matter, nowhere near large enough.

It shares more than a passing resemblance with the Galaxy class as well, but the point is taken. Cryptic seems to intend the Nebula-class as a science vessel of some sort.
Though, it does seem a bit weird to tier the Nebula higher than the Galaxy (and no, I'm not suggesting absolute equivalency between "same" tiers in different ship lines; merely an observation).

I agree there are a great deal of Federation vessels that are really great that seem to be missing from this recent list. Hopefully they are in, or at very least will be introduced at some point.

Which may be why the Nebula itself is not making an appearance.
Some people pointed out that it wouldn't be right to put an Ambassador class in the same configuration as the Galaxy, due to the discrepancy in size. However, the Envoy might be a Galaxy sized Ambassador variant/refit to get around that. So players can have their "Ambassador class" without dealing with massive discrepancies in size within the configuration.
Maybe the Solaris (or Sol) is a Nebula that is closer to the proportions or shape of the Luna to ease player customization.

You may be right. I guess we'll find out as time goes on. Note how the Klingons aren't getting any love :D

Thanks for the link Breach! I have read that before but forgot about it when I saw the list. I still have not decided if I want to go science or what ever skill is for cruiser. Looks like I will not be able to have both the Galaxy and Nebula:( Maybe when my guy is maxed out?

yea the ship listing kinda has me worried also
I was kinda hoping that all the ships from BOTF would be included
seeing some key ships missing has me thinking that maybe the devs will leave some of the canon ships out of the game so that their own designs get used , im guessing if you filled the game with canon ships that everyone would play their favourite and nobody would use the dev designed ships. So they have done this intentionally.
That and there are alot more canon federation ships then klingon so some had to get cut.
Either that or the will be released later in game as additional content.
Either way i just hope the KVORT is in, i have yet to have seen it.

I'm more then sure they will have it. I even built the model of it. I tucked the warp nacelles under the body though and it looks pretty sweet.
They will want to use all the klingon ships that are canon only because it will be easier for them to model them then to come up with 10-15 new ships from scratch. Then again this is what they will end up doing anyway IMO.

Well, again, I suspect that maybe Cryptic had to take some creative liberty in altering preexisting ship designs to accommodate things like customization. For instance, ships in the same configuration can be customized as players switch out parts. So, let's say Cryptic put the Ambassador and Galaxy classes in the same configuration. That creates weird customization since the Ambassador is a lot smaller than the Galaxy. So you would then be able to switch out the huge, oblong, saucer section of the Galaxy for a much smaller saucer section that would look odd since it wouldn't appear to fit the Galaxy's frame. You'd have several ships in the same configuration varying widely in size.
However, there's a solution in scaling up the Ambassador, giving it a more futuristic look, and calling it an "Envoy" class. Same thing with the Excelsior and Constitution. The two ships have discrepancies in size, but they could have taken the Excelsior, scaled it so that the modularity with the Constitution looks more natural, and called it a "Vesper" etc. There is a picture where it looks like an Excalibur was modified with "Excelsior" parts. Since the Excelsior isn't on the ship list, I suspect those "Excelsior" parts are really from the Vesper.
I think that when all is said and done, several of these unfamiliar classes on the list will turn out to be the classes that people claim are "missing" (Nebula, Excelsior, Ambassador, etc.). They'll just be modified so that everything works out.
**Here's the picture (http://www.massively.com/2009/09/29/five-hot-new-star-trek-online-screens/) of the ship with Excelsior parts that I mentioned. Could be a Vesper (either fully or in part).

Dude..you are like in my mind... lol.
No I think BnC is right in that many of the ships we know will be variations of old and new classes. I'm guessing Celestial for Nebula based off of name and the Pic above being the Lacota/enterprize b/exelsior model. Also I think he's dead on about the Ambasador/Envoy tie in. But we'll have to wait and see.

I tend to agree. I know I have already beaten this particular point to death, but... how will this work with the Akira and Oslo I wonder? in the SotL update the Oslo is still much smaller than the Akira.

Many of you have some very intelligent observations. Seems some of the missing ships are indeed going to be in, just not listed.
Makes me wonder if we will see other varients as well, like the Elkins and the Yeager under the Intrepid. And if the Nebula is a Galaxy recongifuration and the Envoy being the Ambassador, then perhaps we will see the Apollo-class among that list as well.
Even the New Orleans-class could be another Galaxy varient players could create.
Guess Cryptic is keeping this in the dark so we can have a pleasent experience for launch.

We already know the Steamrunner class has made appearances, since the PC Gamer article included it. So, I assume the Nebula will be part of the Tier->Class->Configuration->Customization thing mentioned earlier.

I too am a little confused as to the lack of a Nebula class listed. Perhaps it's a reconfiguration of the Galaxy?
Also, regarding this assertion that the Nebula and Luna are similar;
http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Nebula_class
http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Luna_class
Aside from the standard Star Fleet design aesthetic and saucer/engineering/nacelle structure, I don't see any similarity in hull configuration.

Well... that is what configuration implies; the Luna and Nebula may not look much alike, but their basic layout is very similar. The only similarity between the Galaxy and Nebula is the components, which can all be swapped out and so won't help with visual identification.

If the saucer/engineering hull/nacelle set up is all that's required, then the Constitution Configuration would contain; Constitution, Ambassador, New Orleans, Galaxy, Sovereign, Nova, Olympic, Excelsior, Intrepid, Luna and Yeager. This configuration would be all over the place in terms of tier and type.
The cryptic definition of configuration is not structure, but silhouette. Just looking at the silhouette, the Luna and Nebula look nothing like each other. IMO, it makes the Luna look like an Intrepid.

Move the multi-mission pod from the secondary hull and move it to the primary hull and you have a ship in the exact same configuration.
The criteria for the Light Cruiser configuration as explained in one of the Ask Cryptics are:
In this configuration, you will find ships like the Miranda class and the Centaur class. Both these ships have a prominent saucer section, and two nacelles that hang below the saucer. Both these classes have a similar configuration that is nothing like, say, a Galaxy class, Defiant or Nebula class ship.
For the Nebula and Luna, both ships are consist of a saucer section resting on a stardrive hull with no "neck" (as in the Galaxy), downswept pylons with nacelles that run along side the stardrive section, and a multi-mission pod. The Galaxy is different. It's most prominent features that set it apart from the Nebula are the lack of pod and the presence of a "neck." If parts mattered, then the Consitution would be the same configuration as the Miranda. Also if they were in the same configuration, that would mean you could put a pod on the Galaxy. But again, it was explicitly said that a ship reminiscent of a Nebula class would give away its abilities as an "advanced science vessel" not a cruiser.
Looks like a variation of the Excalibur;

I agree about everything except the saucer which I too think looks like it came from an upgraded Excelsior class due to the bluish band around the bottom and the concentric rings. The neck and pylons are the only thing to me that look like they came from some other ship.

why do people keep saying the Luna class looks like the nebula?? they look NOTHING alike!!!
if u take the Nacelles off the Luna most closely resembels a Sovereign or Intrepid class. Te simple put the nacelles on in a downward position. the downward position of the nacelles and the "humps" the sensor pod is attached too give it some similarities to the Akira but thats a bit of a stretch.

It's how the pieces fit together, not the pieces themselves. The Miranda is an official kitbash too. Would you say that's a Constitution variant in the Connie configuration?
The silhouettes are different because the parts are different. One has a more diamond shaped primary hull the other has a very oblong, wide primary hull. Switch the hulls out (which you'll be able to do) and you get a much more similar silhouette. The Nebula is far more compact than the Galaxy and looks nothing like its configuration.
It was said by Rekhan that ships in the same configuration can be made to look identical. You could make a Nebula look like a Luna by switching out the parts. You couldn't make a Nebula look like a Galaxy without adding (the "neck") and removing (the mission pod) parts.

Too small? It's 1/2 the size of a Galaxy class with only 1/3 of the crew. I'd say it's big enough for 350 people

They put the Oslo into the Norway class. Now since they totally renamed the class this could mean many things...
Maybe there's a bit more customization then at first glance. This might include stuff like mixing and matching between the classes. Or it might be as simple as being able to rename your ship's class.
I'd hope ships like the Nebula, Cheyenne and Excelsior are all there and hidden much like the Oslo class though some strange means.

Go to Pc Gamer and look at the artical on STO and you'll see the original Cheyanne as part of the custom options in the Constellation Config pointing to it being the Dakota. It's there, just updated.
