View Full Version : Runabouts! Why are they not the t2 they deserve to be?

Well, in IRC this afternoon/evening we were having a fine discussion about the various ships on the list released, and apart from noting some of the less important issues like the Akira and the Galaxy debate, we also noted the crippling issue about the lack of runabouts in the escort lineup!
So, we have a list of fantastic reasons (since nonsensical lists seem to be all the rage at the moment here), why we know the runabout must be a t2 escort.
Well obviously several runabouts acted as escort for a Galaxy in "The Jem'Hadar", and unlike the Odyssey, they survived, clearly showing their capability in this role.
Much like the points raised in other threads, obviously the runabouts are upgradable with current Federation technology, especially the rollbar which clearly can fire quantum torpedoes at least by 2409.
They require a small crew, thus reducing your dependence on feeble "redshirts" Which clearly would improve its ingame performance dramatically!
Much like all ships with "rollbars" or replacable dorsal pods, it is very versatile, so it could even do scientific missions.
And along the line of the rollbar, we've noticed that the rollbar ships do indeed seem to punch well above their size and last a lot longer than their non-rollbared compatriots. This alone really should give it a place in the game!
The Runabout is one of few ships NOT to have ever been destroyed by the Borg.
For these reasons and MANY others these fine little craft should be at LEAST T2 in STO.
I'm sure you all agree! And feel free to post any more of these superb reasons!

Imagine what a fleet of Runabouts can do!

Your logic is flawed. Everyone knows the Type-II Shuttle is Tier 2 while the Runabout is merely Tier 1. Silly doodoo head!

Clearly the rollbars alone should be used to determine the effectiveness of ships in terms of their placement in the tiers. Thusly the Akira should be Tier 4, Runabouts at least Tier 2, and possibly see the Miranda class slotted in at Tier 3.
The disappointingly rollbar-free Prometheus then can be dropped back to Tier 1 or possibly to the position of starter ship in the place of the Miranda.
This is honestly the only truly accurate way to rate the effectiveness of these ships.

What if they made a ship with... two rollbars.
It would be unstoppable.

What! Two rollbars! You can't have two rollbars! There is nothing in canon with two rollbars! It can't be done!

Well, in a manner of speaking the D'Deridex could be considered an example of the double rollbar. And look how big and clearly superior to Romulan Scouts they are (Clearly due to the superior rollbar-age).

If you add a rollbar to your car, it'll go 20 MPH faster, and get 10% better gas mileage. And quantum torpedoes.

Well of course.
On a totally unrelated note, the interchange near my house has been closed indefinitely due to a quantum singularity. Not my fault, that little %^* cut me off, I had the right of way!

I am prepared to QQd and rage quit if this is not implemented post haste.
Make it so Cryptic!
Fly a Miranda. Load its shuttle bays with 1 roll-barred runabout each. You are now flying a ship containing a grand total of:
6 warp nacelles
3 roll bars
a heck of a bunch of torpedoes
According to the laws of Star Trek Fanon, you should now be unstoppable, you have the nacelles to prove it.

Over 9000 rollbars. Let's see the Borg fight that.

Umm....are we all forgetting the Delta Flyer here? It's tier 3....maybe 4. Its like a miniature sovereign.

Ah, it should be somewhere below runabouts.
After all, there is no rollbar!

The Delta Flyer is missing a rollbar though.
As advanced as its technology may have been surely that technology has by now been adapted to runabouts and with them having a rollbar they surely win a fight between the two of them.

I like that but you're thinking too small. Let's also put rollbars on each redshirt.

I rather suspect there is probably a correct size to rollbar quantity/size ratio however. After all, if you can't manoeuvre the rollbar into a firing position it isn't really any use!
Perhaps rollbars with extra rollbar engines would help?

I'm kinda suprised they aren't a T0 choice but on the other hand a Runabout is a bit small for a ship to command. I think I would feel insulted if my friends were flying off in Mirandas and Centaurs, or even (dreaming) Oberths while I was handed a Runabout to command.

why isn't the delta flyer AT LEAST Tier 3?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?
Deltas have 3 sides and therefore should be considered number 3!

Have you ever noticed that Starfleet seems to follow the Rule of the Ninja? The fewer SF officers in a group, the more butt they kick. Big away team, ensign ricky dies. Kirk by himself, invents a complete diamond cannon and kills a Gorn. There are are so /many/ examples, far too many to list here.
So, since Starfleet officers perform better in fewer numbers, this just gives more credence to the awesomeness of the Runabouts!
