It looks like concept art from a year ago. Seriously, I want to see gameplay screen shots, not something that looks like it belongs in a lousy "loading" screen.

Agreed, the new screenshot does seem awfully out of place.

The description of it says that it's a Borg Cube having a bad day.
The problem is the screenshot looks like it was taken 20 seconds too late as all it looks like now is a space trash rather then a space ship.
It was probably really exciting for whoever was playing when the shot was taken though, likely a definite sense of "Hell yeah, I won!", but for those of us who didn't get to see the fight leading up to the wreckage...
Edit (On second look 20 hours later):
Looking at it a second time today... I am even more underwhelmed.
The Borg Cube looks less like a spaceship wreck to me and more like someone took a plastic model kit of a cube, ran over it with their bicycle, and then rendered it in the game engine.
Parts of it look bent bizarrely inwards (did someone ram part of it, but just enought to bend that one side in?), I'd expect to see scorch marks or explosion damage or cratering on it's surface if it was the result of a fight with an enemy ship, and the actually scattering of debris looks odd given that with elements of the ship bent inwards it doesn't seem as if it had exploded outwards enough to scatter debris in an even field like that.
That said, the shiny gas-cloud nebula effect-thingy in the background is very pretty.
HEY! Give the DEVS some credit.....
.... It took a lot of time to pause the game and create that oil painting.
HA!

It does look like a screen shot, but I do have to say I was rather underwhelmed. It's really just more space junk, and we've had some space junk pics already

Agreed. I actually liked the screen shot. It was nice to see something other than a ship flying by some asteroids (though I enjoy those as well). I also enjoyed scanning the wreckage to pick out parts from destroyed federation ships. It gave it a sense of a really epic battle.
But to each their own.

You people want screenshots but when you get them you complain... oh well.
Personaly I like it... The borg ship has met its maker but that is not sign its over. Its far, far from over :P

Still a picture of something in pieces.

It does look like concept art, but I attribute that to the lighting the screenshots always seem to get. Based on what was seen at PAX and in other gameplay videos, the space screenshots aren't very good representations of the actual ingame shots even though they are ingame shots.
Yes I know, it's confusing.
Also, that's a (mostly) static borg Cube wreckage that is likely part of a mission.

I like the screenshot too, and i hope thats the sort of Borg destruction we can expect. When they died in Legacy it was awful to watch. (anyone who's played it will know what i mean)

I think people would have been more appreciative of a Friday Screenshot with something Klingon in it.
But Klingon appears too be a Top Secret project and we don't appear to have the Level 10 clearance needed to see that yet :p

I'm not going to say it "sucks", but seeing as how we only get one screenshot a week, I would prefer something a little more exciting than space debris :o

09-26-2009, 05:44 AM
My only real complaint, is that it is not a screenshot of a Klingon ship pwning a Fedrat ship. :D :p And I'm actually kinda glad it's not another shot of an Akira.
I appreciate each and every screenshot, and scour over them to glean whatever possible about the game and also admire the handiwork of Cryptic's STO team.
If you look at the dates of some of the past screenshots, we used to go weeks without any new screenshots. So getting 1 screenshot a week is more screenshots more often, and something to look forward to. It would be nice if they released 2 screenshots on Friday :) *hint hint* Like, 1 ship shot, 1 ground shot.

They could make us drool for weeks if they'd just release one screenshot of a mixed battlegroup of Klingon ships.. they can even make it with them cruising through one of the asteroid belts they seem to like so much. :)

I think it would of been more appropriate to say the new screenshot is trash :-P
I'll admit i'm not overally amazed by it, since afterall, its just debri of ships. I'd much more prefer to see the interior of spacedock, or some klingon fleets or maybe even well established locations from Trek, like DS9 or something. it's not that its a bad screenshot as such, just that when we only get one a week I'd prefer something a bit more spectacular, saying that, a screenshot rarely captures the actual atmosphere of whats happening!

I like it, i really enjoy seeing all the flotsom and jetsom after a battle. It's something far too many games completely neglect.

I liked this weeks screen shot. It showed us an example of an environment that has the aftermath of a large battle. It shows that it won't only be open space, asteroids, nebulae and the occasional planet. It also allowed us to search the screen shot for federation ships and other things.

I'd like to see more Klingon stuff. We keep hearing they will get more attention but heh I can't help but feel they are left in the cold. It is very cold in spaaaaace..... Even if they are going to be given more updates in the future it couldn't hurt to give an extra Klingon screenshot or two.

You mean the exploding mess that resembled a larger version of the borg cubes when they were destroyed in Star Trek: Armada?
One thing that always miffed me is how these HUGE ships exploded like they had very little mass.

Wouldnt some of the mass be vaporized in a warp core(or transwarp coil) explosion?

I'm almost beginning to suspect that the screenshots are a pilot device to see how the public reaction will be to some ship, background, or event. If the public views the screenshot negatively then they might go back to the drawing board or tweak it.

It is. Though the ship of the lines are set in stone and the basic area is set in stone, yet they can and do change things based on feedback.
Friday screenshot it's cool. But,
We would have something other than explosion and wreckage...
Its Star Trek,
We want to see Klingon (if possible). And, away team spoke with a new race :D

Ditto. Also, some non-asteroid loving SSs are always welcome. I'm really curious about what the in-game looks like after so many have said that even the trailers and SSs don't accurately portray it.

While i like the new screenshot, i was expecting the sides of the cube to be more detailed. I know this was jsut blown up, but i was expecting the cube to have sides more like this:
http://api.ning.com/files/KSIMUu4ewW2AJBMPoykhF14KtzaF6r-2mmgkfmz1aQa5hRzixA-ckgsFhR8HCWaAqvQK1KKSQHMVr6WKcgP1bZqN0bvCsJU0/BorgCube.jpg
Notice the cube doesnt have sharp distictive corners or edges.. its more bumpy.

The answer to that question is very simple:
Too resource intensive. That model you showed was probably a few million polygons. That's a professionally rendered, CGI job that undoubtedly took a minute or two to render on a high powered machine. I've got a powerful machine and putting even ONE of those on the screen would have brought my FPS to about 1 frame per Minute! Not seconds, Mintues.
Also, bumpiness is the eye of the artist. Some like'em bumpy, some like'em smoother.

For all those that say they enjoy the so-called screenshot, I respect your opinion. However, the fact of the matter is that this is not a real screenshot. Rather, as mentioned earlier in this thread, it is simply a mediocre piece of concept art.
For those that indicate that we should all be content with any information Cryptic puts out, I must point out to you that this is a product that we may, or may not, pay for with our money. If you are happy with anything that has the Star Trek brand that someone puts out, then enjoy. Although, from what I’ve read on these forums for the past year, I highly doubt that any of you do enjoy every piece of Star Trek product, e.g. Star Trek V and Nemesis. I, conversely, want a quality product and will not be satisfied with anything other than that. Furthermore, I will not hesitate to call out trash when I see it; and that "screenshot" is indeed trash.

I've liked most of teh SS so far and i wouldn't go so fafr as to say this one sucks. That would seem rude to me. but I will admit that it looks wrong to me. The texture of teh Borg cube seems off but I'm kinda wondering if that is because it switched to a low texture model when it explodes to help model the actual explosion without people taking an FPS hit.
