First Officer

Hey Folks,

is anyone aware of any information regarding the role of the first officer on your ship? WIll there actually be a distinction between the FIrst Officer and the rest of the bridge crew? perhaps some sort of middle ground between your avatar and the standard bridge officers.

i dont recall the devs saying anything about this, but i think it would certainly fall in line with every trek episode/movie to have a distinct role for your First Officer on your ship.

A First Officer is anyone that is second in command of the ship. Take Spock for example, he is both the first officer and a science officers of the USS Enterprise and Enterprise-A. In the newer series the First Officer was a distinct role, so I think is could be either way in this game and it might be based on the size of the ship possibly.

Hmm, I did a 5 sec search, and came up with a thread about First Officers. Wasn't too hard, really.

right, the concept of the first officer i get, im just curious how/if it will be implimented in STO thats all...i read these forums daily but for whatever reason i cannot recall seeing information about the First Officer and how it will play into things

and no Falcon, i dont feel like reading through the 500 page academy text to find the answer, thanks :)

Looking through the first few pages of search results on "First Officer" there's actually not a whole lot discussing their existance and implementation.

Thus

From what I've read on ST:O our ships will essentially have 3 types of station: Science, Engineering, Tactical, in varying number depending on our ship. The simplest way to implement a First Officer system would be to add a Wildcard slot to the ship that takes any type of officer.
As CaptainBurst points out though, Spock was wearing two hats, the First Officer role and the Science officer role. While Voyager and the Enterprise D and E all had First officer chairs, as I recall there was no such provision on the Defiant. By that, if we put the Defiant in tier 2.(Where it belongs! Akiras cannonically have something like 8 forward facing torpedo tubes as well as several phaser arrays, it'd be wierd to have them outgunned by the Defiant's 2 pulse phasers, 2 torpedo tubes and a dorsal phaser; plus the Oslo/Akira hull is a lot bigger than the Vigilant/Defiant hull) then we could assume that Tier 3 ships and beyond get a first officer slot, while the smaller vessels do not have one, and their first officers also man another station

The only other question then is what function a First Officer serves - does he just work as another regular officer, or should he provide a passive benefit of some flavour? Reducing cooldowns or increasing the strength of similar officer abilities or some such.

As for the TV/movie ships: We have TOS Enterprise with Tactical Kirk and Science Spock; TNG Enterprise with Scientist Picard and Tactical Riker; Voyager with Scientist Janeway, Tactical Janeway's hair, and Tactical (or Science) Chakotay; and DS9 Defiant with Tactical Sisko (Though he could also be an engineer, since he did time at Utopia Planetia IIRC) and either Tactical Kira, Tactical Worf or Scientist Dax.

The First Officer should be the highest ranking BO, for example im a Lt my next highest rank BO is LtJg at say Eng, hey wold be my FO.
