Let's say I want to ultimately be a skipper of a science ship. My ship will have a couple of spots for science BC's. Should my skipper be more of a tactical officer?

After all, I'm going to be at the helm of the ship, as the player is responsible for flying the ship. Let another BC take over the science stations while the skipper concentrates on conn and tactics.

After all, if I had a spiffy new Discovery class ship, I'd like the best captain available in the big chair rather than just another science whiz. The ship will have tons of those guys, but we really need a skipper that knows what to do when the crap hits the fan in the big chair.

Then, when its time for ground action, you have a skipper that knows how to handle a phaser and can do kirk style drop kick fu while your science whizes work the tricorders.

Does that make sense in a STO way?

In fact it makes a good deal of sense. Look at it this way, your bridge seats have profession limitations and level limitations..the captains chair has none of these. You want to bring the pew pew to a science vessel..being a tactical Captain will do it regardless of the seating restrictions of your hull.

Space skills wont be resitricted by career. You will gain some clickable abilties with career that can be used in space, but any space skill can be selected. So you could havea science officer and still max out your space combat skills. Ground skills are limted by class, but you can choose bridge officers you want to go with you. So you could be the science ground officer, and take a bunch of tacticle officers.

In space, it will really depend on what clickable skills you want.
