Hey guys! Now that Champions has launched. We've settled everything, and Daeke is handling the community for that game, it's time for me to come back and pay attention to the Star Trek Community.

What I'd like to do is have a community chat between myself and you guys on Monday, September 28, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. PDT. We'll talk about what you guys want to see out of this community. What are your expectations and how would you like us to deliver your information, etc.?

Let's try to keep it constructive. You'll definitely be seeing more of me in IRC, as a matter of fact I'm going to try to be in every day for at least an hour of non stop communication. We'll start doing fun IRC games, forum challenges and I'll be handing out some beta keys.

My primary job right now is to listen to you and make sure that you have answers to relevant queries.

Finally - It's great to be back!

I've seen community efforts to create a wiki (like www.stowiki.org) and fiction / roleplaying sites and these are wonderful, but right now information is stored in various threads on the forums and this creates lots of duplicate threads (constructive or otherwise) and the community itself moderates this through sarcastic replies. We need a better way to SEE in the information shared to us, such as your own wiki (dev postings only, not user modified) and more FAQ pages with information updated from dozens of Dev Chats and forums replies that we currently have. New users come to the site and see a couple pages, and they don't see a clear "Features" list and then they get lazy and go to the forums and ask there.

Check out the 'Everything we know about STO' thread. Could we have an official page of that? I think people would be more constructive if there was also commentary (Rekhan's replies) to the features list so they see WHY decision X or feature Y works.

Some of us (IE Peregrine Falcon) could be trusted to help with a wiki, veteran forum posters not unlike Blizzard's green posters (i forget what they were called) could help with the wiki to help calm people down and see the positive light behind decisions such as 'not including multiple people controlling a single starship'.

In summary: Better presentation through an LCARS wiki or something like that would be aweome.

Also we're definitely working on a website overhaul. I'm hoping that you'll see it sooner rather than later. :)

Newsletters are so 23rd century :P

I've been loving the Twitter interaction lately. It's not only the best way to give us up to the minute info but I've been impressed that I actually get replies to my @mentions from you. The occasional funny post is always great too.

I'd love to give a hand with a Wiki page but unfortunately I'm kind of a sad excuse for a Trekkie. I could never sit through all of TOS and I've still yet to devote the time to sitting through all of DS9 front to back.

The short of it is, this quote is exactly why I like Cryptic and one or two other MMO developers today.

I am a long time MMO player. I got started in the days of UO and EQ. Back then, developers just made the game they wanted to make, and typically ignored the feedback of their comunity. I even remember when the EQ devs took down the official messageboards, because they actually got sick of all the negetive feedback and balance issues players were reporting.

An MMO is just not like other videogames. With the amount of time and money we players invest in it, not to mention all the friends we make while playing the game, an MMO is more than just another game I have picked up at the local game store. It is not just the developer's game, it is MY game. Unlike other videogames, I have come to expect something a little more from an MMO. Not only do I expect a great game, but I also expect comunication with the guys who run it.

Any decent MMO needs to have this comunication. I get frustrated when I try to play a foreign made MMO, where the devs never comunicate with us. Games like Age of Conan, Final Fantasy XI, and any korean MMO all drove me crazy because of this. As American players, we had no idea if the devs were receiving our feedback, and we had no idea what their thinking was concerning 'this issue' or 'that problem'.

During the Champions beta test, as well as on these public boards, we really comunicated with the Cryptic devs. Not only are we free to give feedback, express concerns, or contribute new ideas, but the devs and comunity reps often respond directly back with us. Even when they do not respond back, you will often see your feedback show up in a future patch.

This is what we really need from an MMO developer. It is not enough to make and maintain the game, they also need to keep the comunity involved. Cryptic has been very good at this so far, and I am planning for STO to be 'my' game for quite a while.

Dude, W/B

Hey 2 quick things, now that CO has given us our "guy" back :) *** STO CALLED they want their rep back ****

1 ) Can you fix the SotL so the older ones are in the same format as the new ones?

2 ) Can you get all of the screen shots on the STO website? You know, the rest of them that were given to all of the 3rd parties for interviews. Its kind of a pain to go out to like 5 or 6 websites to track down whatever one I am trying to look at. If you feel really cool, you could also throw up the new video footage (german game conn and PAX). I'll understand if you dont feel cool enought for that, but had to ask! :)

Without getting too specific (and violating forum guidelines about discussing disciplinary actions) perhaps you could have some moderators research issues a little more in depth before placing permanent infractions on individuals or closing their threads. Imho, the atmosphere here has gotten a little thicker and more paranoid the last few months for some unknown reason.

Hello, and welcome back to the Star Trek Online forums!

Since you specifically asked how you'd like us to deliver information, may I recommend that the STO community team please consider using some means other than IRC chat?

Every time I'm in IRC I feel like it's 1983 again, and that Matthew Broderick should be sitting beside me at my computer. There are just so many better ways to deliver information nowdays. So many VOIP clients, many of which are free to use and allow a lot of control over who is allowed to speak and who isn't. Taking questions in a forum thread and then answering them in a video which is then uploaded to YouTube is also a good possibility. ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC all have their own YouTube channels, there is just no reason why the Star Trek Online Community Team couldn't have their own YouTube channel.

The last time I was in an STO IRC chat it lasted about an hour, but it took all of about 45 seconds for me to read the transcript later on the forums. I remember thinking, "That's it? That information took over an hour to type out in IRC? If they were just speaking it would have taken maybe two minutes to say all of that."

So please, please consider using something a little more up to date than an IRC chat room. It's the 21st century and there are many many other options available out there.

Thank you.

You have a point, but they can take much much more feedback with the IRC text than they can with only voice. While the one voice of the dev may be able to spew out more info in a voiced chat, the dev surely can't listen to as much feedback, not everyone can talk at once.

The best of both worlds is something that has both voice and text and the voices of the non devs can be muted. This is the way the Voon chat was handled and I rather liked it.

So in general I agree, but I'd rather see IRC with real time feedback than a pure vent type voiced chat.

The software that I PM'd Awen about would allow the devs to send video and talk, but not allow forum users who join the chat to talk, only to type. It also doesn't require us to download anything, and the "chat room" runs entirely in your browser as a Flash application.

This would allow the dev team to chat and allow us to type in questions, which they could then answer in voice. This will greatly increase the speed of information flow.

Good stuff. You'd also be able to hear voice inflection, which obviously gives a lot of subtle information. Well, and just makes the whole chat more personable...

I'm not sure that we'll be getting all that much more info. They take a while to respond because they are probably reviewing what they say to make sure they don't say something wrong. That would probably be the same for voiced as well.

Welcome back!

I'm gonna say it here, because chances are I won't make the IRC chat, that we DESPERATELY need the VIDEOS section updated here on startrekonline.com. It makes it seem like there hasn't been a video released in 8 months, when that is NOT the case. Let newcomers have more videos easily accessible. Not everyone knows to come to the forums and find the sticky.

why did you dump the page up???

I pushed the wrong button on my keyboard and it came up as the top of the page, so i clicked on it, just waking up still half asleep .

And the more of you bumping will just keep it up, if people want it gone, let it go.

My primary job right now is to listen to you and make sure that you have answers to relevant queries.

Finally - It's great to be back!
Excellent, welcome back.

It would be nice if you could address the Admiral issue; there's been enough discussion about it that I'd say it's relevant to a significant portion of the community.

First of all, are there any incentives for staying at the rank of Captain? With Tier 5 ships not only restricted to Admirals but also given free (upon promotion to Admiral), as well as the fact that Admirals will still have access to solo and exploration content, it would seem that everyone's goal should be to become an Admiral. Does the rank of Captain even matter any more, or is it just something to be passed by, like the rank of Ensign?

edit: dang... I just now noticed the original post was made a month ago.

I'm not having a meltdown Bedlam ... but his post made absolutely no sense at all ... aside from the fact that the thread is misleading in itself.

I just watched Jacob write an entire full page post ... and then after words, he realized himself that this was an old thread ... wasting his time and bumping it yet again.

IT NEEDS TO BE CLOSED!

And I'm only responding because it was already bumped again, up to the very top.

hehehe, the more people respond after reading nothing but the OP and without bothering to look at the date the funnier this thread gets.

Keep it open and just play an audio file of Ackbar yelling 'it's a trap!' whenever they press send.
