chances are, it will be like most MMOs, IE typing to each other. however, a voice often could be added in later, like in WoW.

but that would be canon... how many times did we see Uhura scream and grab her bluetooth away from her head when the comm system went nutty?

Well personally I will more than likely be using vent. Every game that has had a voice program as part of the game has not been very good. But chances are that any fleet that you join will have either team speak or vent for the fleet. Though for the main game I am going to assume if they are using the CO engine that the messaging will be text based. I personally do not like the CO text chat program they use. I can do a /team /zone or /local. But I tried to do a /reply and it did nothing. Without a manual to refer to for the technical aspects of the game I am not sure what the reply command is so I have to right click the name choose to PM and then type the message. Very annoying.
**hope they actually have a game manual with this one instead of pinching pennies.

See this is the kind of thing I don't want to hear ... if someone doesn't like the game, that fine ... but when I start hearing that players can figure out how to interface with the game ...

Yeah it is not the standard /reply that you would think. The manual that shipped with the game had two pages on instalation. Two on troubleshooting. The rest was a copy and paste of the EULA. When I say copy and paste it even had the buttons at the end to click to agree or disagree with it. lol
They then said that they did not want a firm manual that they were going to have something on the website. Well if you look at it and then try and figure out the game based just on that......good luck. It is how to create the character and nothing about how stats really work. What powers go with what stats. Information from them is terrible. You have to go onto the forums and get the scoop from the players to understand it.

Dang, I'm going to have to brush up on my /commands. Eve only has /me and everything else you do (like /tell or /reply) puts this in the chat box:
slash: /tell
Doesn't show up to the other people, and doesn't do squat lol.
Pretty funny about the instruction booklet having the agree/disagree buttons at the bottom :)
I think they will have a voice client in game, but I'm sure most people will use TS/Vent/etc anyway. I've used Eve's voice, and it's decent (it's gotten better over time), but I honestly use Vent.
And I'm looking forward to STO not having as steep learning curve as Eve (hmm, would link the pic of the MMO learning curves which is pretty funny imo, but I've lost my copy :() I'm kind of glad I started off as a miner in Eve, because it gave me plenty of time to surf the web and learn up on Eve. I'm not wanting that in STO, though. I want a decently hard learning curve for STO, but I'm not set on it (not a deal breaker for me) nor expect too steep.
So tl;dr - I don't know /commands, I'll most likely be using 3rd party voice (when I do use it at all), and sorry about the tangent about the learning curves (pretty funny about the booklet though imo)

i don't think an in-game voice function is required. I may have just had the wrong experiences but i've never come across a decent in game voice chat.
Besides, with Vent and Team Speak and all those other programs, why waste time and money doing something that's already been done and a large percentage of your player base will continue to use just because it's what they're used to doing?
Just saying.

No problem. From what I have heard it's pretty close to the truth too.

Lol, yeah. Can't speak for the other MMOs, but Eve's is pretty bang on. I think I'm about at the bulldozer stage, but Eve's probably tricking me and I'm really at the crosses. :D

Can you imagine ... that's not even that long ago. We don't even have a fixed phone in our house now ... we're all cellular.
Which drives TiVo nuts because it keeps wanting to make a call, and I don't have a phone line for it to call on.
LOL
