View Full Version : Has anyone noticed the timeline...Possible Closed Beta Date

Since Day 1 when Cryptic announced STO, there has been the "The Path to 2409" articles

The last being "The Path to 2409: 2392", which seems to state there is only a mere 17 years until 2409.

Now if you do some analysis of how many days/weeks/months it took from the start you may be able to come up rough estimate when the closed beta will be (which I assume will be in "2409") also considering Cryptic have stated many time it would be 'later this years' which only has about 3.5 months left.

Just food for thought :)

they have covered different spans of time in various "path to"s.
I suspect that as we get closer to release, the paths will cover less time and add more detail about characters and locales and ships that we will meet in game. Since those things found later in the timeline are more likely to be around for our interaction. I'm sure they want to add depth to the lore of in-game stuff.

So even if theres 17 years to go in the path, there may not be 17 more editions of the path, and thus not 17 weeks until completion. The very last path may only cover the very last month before release, not a whole year

Personally, I feel the chances are, they'll stick with one post per year, but then theres no reason they can't do more supplemental logs per year? But anyway, thats all just my personal opinion and may well be wrong, Its up to Cryptic what they do.

The chances are that the Path to 2409 will acturally end just before the M\ain Release of the game to be honest, seeming beta isn't really for playing the game, its for testing the game :P

And sure, theres only 17 more years left to cover... however, the current Path to 2409 has only covered 13 years so far, a fair few left to go. Also, you cant really judge when the path to 2409 will end, seeming that it started in augst 2008 and theres been 13 posts so far (its also been 13 months since the first post), so if the path to 2409 carries on its current pace, its gonna finish about christmas time 2010, which is a bit later than i expect star trek online to come out :P

I really hope they give it a good long closed and open beta and don't 'rush it out the door" like they did with Champions Online.(which jas nothing but problems because of it) IMHO, something as epic as STO deserves the very best testing before the masses are allowed flood in.

It was just a matter of time before someone posted a thread on the matter. That could mean that if thay crank out one story a week it would take 17 weeks, just in time for xams, eh?

Exams don't worry me :p I'm a 52 year old fart (still remember the first episode of Star Trek (TOS) (what like 37 years ago?)) been an addict ever since :)

I seriously doubt these stories have any bearing on a release timeline. Will be nice for them if the timing falls into place but if they have sense the beta's and full release will only be done when they happy with it.
I think we can safely rule out the beta not coming out in December as there is too many holidays around that time.

If they stick to the 'Later this Year' statement , IMHO the Closed beta will start around mid October or Early November and continue on well into the first quarter of 2010 maybe even 2nd Quarter. Most major MMO's usually release around Christmas time (historically) or a month or 2 before, so I estimate the open beta will be sometime mid 2010 and run a couple of months.

IMHO..Probably WAY off :)

I think he meant x-mas/ christmas, not exams. ;)

On topic;
I think the Paths 2409 will be sped up to once every 2 weeks and that the final one will come out 1 or 2 weeks before going live.

I think the biggest problem in CO happend when they started open beta/early access and woop nolifers got to 40 in single day and they tought they need to nerf the XP and with that the content wasnt enough to get to to 40.

Not to really go into CO here, but I only got a sub for it (6 month) directly for the Closed Beta for STO. (I 'bought' my Closed Beta Ticket, the first day they advertised it here :) ) I bought the game (CO) because I liked the beta (which totally changed on release), Now after a month, I probably will uninstall CO because its gotten to where you have to party for almost any quest if your an energy build (I have paid access till Apr '10 but whats the use if you have to wait, and maybe finding a party in order to level) because of balance nerfs and when you live in the part of the world I do (New Zealand) there aren't many on CO at my 'prime time' (like 2AM in the USA)
I never actually intended to play CO, so I would just cut my looses and wait for STO Beta. (no refund because that would negate the closed beta access)

One thing I can see here is STO looks pretty much as a 'solo' game. Haven't heard anything about 'teaming' yet.
Solo would be so great for those that aren't awake when the largest groups are on.

STO has both. There is content that u cant solo on (Such as the borg), but the normal stff u can do Solo.

It will have groupings as well, I'm not sure if the CO is just a single server too (I believe it is) but STO is also highly anticipated in Europe. Perhaps you can team up with us folks over here, Prime time for you should be about noon/midday here. Not the busiest times but it could be far worse. In the weekend you can expect lots of people to be online though. :)

I have a few people in my 'Old Timers Club' (Retired Officers Fleet) that will be able to do party stuff, but they are not even the least bit interested in Champions Online (CO). (I'm not very thrilled with it either at the moment)

I just seems that you should have a lot to do in STO, even if no one is around, and that's a big plus.

I agree.

The artilcles are independant of the development cycle. They will speed them up, slow them down, change the 'time coverage', etc, as needed.

They could release the game next week, and simply post a final 'Path to' Article that covers the remaining years, or they could release the game in 2 years, and spread out the 'path To' articles to cover that time as well.

Its just for entertainment purposes.

I've already done the math on this, and at the current rate the game wouldn't be out for another year.
So it is clear that there must be a plan to release more frequent updates as we get closer to the game.
They will problably start doing 1 post per week once beta comes out.

I know I can be shoot for this by some :) I hope the game does take another year or so (well at least until Oct 2010, and not just because I'm in the Closed Beta..) I really hope pressures (financial or public) don't make Cryptic "rush it out the door" to release like they did with Champions Online (IMHO)..Big Mistake.

A good solid amount of real testing should come first, and break the cycle of the dreaded 'New MMO Release' that seems to plague some many in the present and past.

Good point, i read this on Ten Ton Hammer.

Last December, Cryptic Studios gave fans of upcoming Star Trek Online a pleasant holiday surprise in the form of the first in-depth look at one of the game’s multi-role ships, the NX-91001. When I first reported the news, I also pointed out that speculation surrounding a possible release date contained within the ship’s numbers had already begun popping up on the game’s official forums:

One particularly clever member of the official forums also pointed out that this might potentially be a hint at a possible release date – 10.01.2009 (the numbers from the NX-91001 sequenced backwards) Considering the shorter development cycle for Cryptic's other announced title, Champions Online, an October '09 release date doesn't sound too far off the mark. Mind you this is all just wild speculation at this point, but if it proves to be accurate it would certainly be a much bigger holiday gift than anyone realized!

ALSO, please note that its suspicious that the random adds for in game movies based on characters like Foxbat and Sapphire both release on October 1st.

Here is the Article.

Cryptic of any of these are hints then i tip my hat to you!
