Peeps,

I was wondering if there was going to be a 'Points of Interest' type exploration in-game, much like how SWG had a 'badge' system when you visited famous places from the movies.

Maybe on your service jacket it would show that you visited the Fire Caves of Bajor, or the Wolf 359 Memorial ... or something else along those lines.

You know, just a tip of the hat to the series and movies.

Now talk amongst yourselves....

No words about that but since there' s a "Badge"system in in COX, it's highly likely that they're going to implement something like it

We've been adding "perks," which are similar to achievements from Xbox Live or Steam. During the demo at PAX, one of the Captains got a 100,000 damage perk on Saturday. It was pretty cool. :)

any ingame bonuses to these perks, or are they just like the standard achievement system. (like a displayable title/special customization?)

i assume its just achievements, but you never know...

If you have played Champions, then you have a good idea how the perks work. Although in STO we are calling them Accolades.

I created and implemented a pretty big chunk of the Champion Perks, it was my primary contribution to Champs..

Perks in cryptic games are a little more useful than xbox live acheivements, in that they usually open unlockables within the game. They also have a form of currency attached to them, (perk points) which can then be spent on items, costume unlocks, collectables, etc.

In STO we are using them to not only reward players for doing cool things, and exploring strange new worlds, but we are also adding them for playing a little more inline with cannon.

For example, the more Starfleet "like" your gameplay style is the more Federation Accolades you will recieve, if your playing a Starfeet character. Same goes for Klingons and the KDF.

A Starfleet mission for example, might have three main opjectives like answer a distress call, save it's captain, and get off the ship before it explodes. However there might also be a hidden Accolade within the mission that says if you also manage to save all the ships crew as well... here are some extra rewards... :)

Wow, loving this. If say by some miracle this did end up on the 360 (CO too) would this be how you would do the acheivements? Totally hypothetical of course.

:O so heres a question. if there is a accolade like what you described, about saving the crew, is it a one shot pass/fail? or can it be tried multiple times? (eg: first time through, you fail to save the crew. can you try again, or is that it and you are out of luck?)

either way, this is a great system. :D

Objective: kill the captain and crew; tow the ship back as your prize.

Hidden accolade: Hand the captain your disrupter first, turn off your forcefield, and attack him just with your bat'leth.

Second hidden accolade: have a song written about it.

Sweet!

That is really awesome. I love that system and Cryptic for implementing it.

That was something I thought about in LOTRO, there was really no gameplay reward for playing "in character" (playing / acting the way a Hobbit or Elf really would, etc.) and no penalty for acting contrary to the established racial characteristics.

I love that STO will reward you for playing "in character" or in line with your faction's characteristics.

I wonder if there will also be a penalty for going against your faction's nature, with more emphasis on the Federation side and their Prime Directive, like if you kill peaceful aliens or give technology to a primitive race you get a court-martial for violating the Prime Directive.

I love the idea of rewarding players for playing more in line with canon, and giving them some bonuses on top of just a regular old badge.

However, I hope that the idea of awarding medals to players for their service has also been considered in some way. Maybe accolades are more minor accomplishments than would warrant a medal, but it would be nice (and more immersive) to be awarded a "Starfleet Distinguished Service Ribbon" for saving that ship's crew than an "accolade" that pops up on the screen.

Medals and ribbons would also make a cool addition to the character profile, and although this is a stretch, could be included as unlockable costume pieces to appear on the player's Starfleet dress uniform or a Klingon Ha'quj.

Guess a new Perk/Badge-Hunting-Season is about to start... XD

Edit: hmm if they're like the COX Badges I have to get a new name for my first Captain, Because AraYm should be the one who gets as much Badges/perks as possible (since in Cox some badges couldn't be achieved after leveling up (I know It is possible after I13 I think) -.-' )

Perks... aka Accolades are generally set up so that they can be done at anytime, in case you miss them the first time around. They are actually "quests" for lack of a better word, that are placed on the character at creation.

In the example earlier, yes you might miss it the first time.. actually odds are you prb will :) But whatever part you dont complete the fiirst time could be completed buy helping a friend run the mission if they havent done it yet... you wouldnt have the overall mission again, but you could help them complete it, and grab your accolade the second time around. Once you find them (sometimes just by loading into a area), they show up in your journal. So you know what you missed (or what you need to complete) the first time around.

You never know where those sneaky Accolades will be hiding :)

and another way to get perks;

if you are a fed, and you are sent to deal with a hostile entity [like a klingon vessel that is somewhere it is not supposed to be], and destroy the ship, that would be considered a successful mission.

but if you CAPTURE the ship intact, or partially intact, it would be even "perkyer".

and especially if it is a ship that believes in "death before dishonor" and would normally self destruct before being captured.
so you would need to send a crack boarding party on board to disable the self destruct mechanism BEFORE it got so badly damaged that they would want to use it.
and that would mean even more perks.
maybe a sliding scale according to how many of the crew can be kept alive.

and for a klingon;
to allow an enemy near defeat to send out a distress call so that more enemy ships would be drawn to the location, and then destroy all of those pesky "do gooder feds"

yea, perks could get good.

On a semi-side note, will there be anything to gate someone from just sandbagging that content?

For example, what happens if I am at 'Tier 4', but I want to go back and get an Accolade that was in a 'Tier 2' mission? I would think that I cannot group with my Tier 2 friends with my Tier 4 Toon to do Tier 2 content, because of the trivializing effect of my Tier 4 toon.

I'm not sure how Cryptic are doing it, but Eve sometimes has limits on what ships you can take into certain areas. For example, the dead space complexes will have a limit on the ship size you can take into them (A level 2 can allow frigates and cruisers, but if you try to enter with a battleship, it won't let you. Most of the time.) Same thing happens with some of the lower level missions. I hope that Cryptic does something similar.

If I remember correctly i read some where that you can keep all of your old ships and keep upgradeing them. So in theory if you need a low lvl ship to do a mission you can just pull one out of storage for it and it will be able to be fully upgraded to make it easier. That way you can get the perk pts.
