View Full Version : LOOTING - 'Icons' and 'Glowing' Orbs seem too Much.

I find the 'Loot Icons' (turning a corpse into a "!" symbol or "Glowing Blue/red Orb") to be too much of an immersion breaker.
It seems too coddling -- we are not that dumb that we need a Neon sign to tell us to loot a corpse.
I would rather just stick with the old school style of clicking on the mob corpse.

Aye...lose them, or at least give us the option to turn it off.

No. The loot system is one thing I really hope STO takes from CO. Being able to just press Z, Z to pick up drops (and open doors) has made my play experience so much smoother, not to mention less tiring on my wrist.

Can't we just have an auto loot option. I like to loot everything on kill and go through the booty when I get to a stopping point.

I'd take that.

Auto loot sounds good, I put my vote in for that.

Is there any reason we can't press Z to loot something off a corpse instead of a glowy ! mark?

You may not be... but most gamers are :P

Well, not all Trek fans are gamers at all, but are interested in STO cause its something new to Trek, in a sense.

I'd rather see them se something that's still noticeable without having a giant glowing icon fill up the screen. It does feel like those would clutter up the screen.
Why not put something like a glowing outline around a loot-able corpse? .. or something else akin to the glowy sparkles you get in WoW. Those are obvious enough that you can identify a loot source with a quick glance without covering over something important behind them.

When I used auto-loot in WoW it would just tell me that I didn't have any room if my bags were full and then I could go through and drop stuff that I didn't really want if the mob I had just killed anything better. It wouldn't be too hard for Cryptic to do something like that.

I'd like a feature to be able to scan the body with a tricorder for a simple search of anything valuable, and then maybe a thorough hand search that may reveal something that the tricorder didn't pick up. Might be easier for those who don't care about looting every item off of a dead body.

IMHO .. keep it simple .. make it work (on Cryptics part) .. user friendly for everyone.
I know where you are comming from Loekii .... But I wouldn't get too worked up over something like this. Not having maneuverability (that sort of thing) .. those might be bigger issues.
IMHO this is not necessarily a deal breaker .. as long as it's not "overly" done !

Definitely not a deal break but it could be a big annoyance.
I'd hate to get shot when I didn't see a bad guy because a giant floating loot icon was in the way.

I wouldn't mind loot icons (not an exclamation mark) on the ui in some sort of computer metaphor. "Anomalie detected" so to speak put a beep with it and I'm good.

The Cryptic team is doing a great job so far, from the PAX videos. Of course, as the end-users we all have our own expectations of what the game should be like, but in the end, I think it will all work out, and most of us will be happy.

Time for me to go all fanboi on your asses. Looting corpses???!!!!! That is certainly not very Star Trek. Perhaps for Klingons, but certainly not for the supposed high moral authority that is Starfleet. I'd rather see a more story-driven, NPC interaction-based mechanism for receiving rewards for away missions in general. And I certainly don't want to be salvaging modules in space like EVE.
Make it so!
Agreed, the giant glowing ball things are horrible looking. I would suggest something less obtrusive that stays on or around the wreck and vanishes when its looted, something that doesn't look quite so terribly jarring and immersion shattering.

Personally, I am hoping "looting" is not a big part of this game. I am not exactly pumped about having my Starship captain taking tricorders off of dead orion pirates to sell at the starbase. Seeing as we are all going to be members of a military, there should be better ways of dealing with items other then "drops".
That being said, if the guard I just killed has a quest item, by all means.

The balls... I don't like them.
However, I do believe we need a screen indicator for loot. If I fight a hord of Klingons across a large map, I want to be able to know easily which corpses I've looted and which I haven't. It's too easy to see 3 bodies piled against one another and forget which one you managed to loot before the other 5 guys attacked you. Yes you can search each of them again, but it's time consuming when you get a larger number of enemies.
As for the Federation looting...
Take Tricorder from Dead Orion. Recycle tricorder in replicator. Make new phaser power pack.
Selling is for people without replicators. :p

Are these balls/orbs like the boosts in CO? If so, I can take 'em or leave 'em.

Auto-loot on by default with warning message when you are too full and keep the loot glowly thing but add customizing options to reduce it's appearance.
Someone new to the game will need visual indicators initially but experienced players will not. Once you are experienced, you can customize it.

I like the glowing outline (not too big on the orbs) idea. And I agree with LordDave. I may be Federation, but in war (or just combat), I don't really have a problem with 'looting a corpse' for some technology/items to help my side win. Auto loot ideas are good, too, imo.

Yeah ... that's kinda what I'm talking about "over done". There's a good moderate way to do it ! Someone will figure it out.

*ahem* I'm sure a lot of ST fans would be happy for some balls.
On a serious note, yeah I think stuff needs to be highlighted. It says to you, something interesting here! Makes sure players don't miss their epic lewt.

What if the Neon light only lights up when the dead body has an item to loot?
I like it as it adds to the whole futuristic atmosphere of the game.
