who knows, probably not but taken from the gamespy article(great article):

starter: Miranda

Cruisers: constitution, cheyenne, galaxy, sovereign

Science vessels: Nova, Olympic, Intrepid, Luna

Escort ships: Saber, Akira, Defiant, Prometheus

4 tiers and to me it looks like its listed in progression(i wonder how the galaxy > sovy ppl will take that). if i were to speculate those 12 ships are just one branch in a very large tree.

given the number of different vairants(configuration? im hesitant to misuse dev lingo) there could dozens and dozens of end results.

what do others think? are there other ships confirmed in the game that this list doesnt encompass?

The Federation starts with 16 standard configurations, as stated here: Zam Article (http://www.zam.com/story.html?story=18861)

I know it's not strictly Federation, but the Class VII Commercial Laboratory vessel could be one. Probably not, but it might be a ship for both sides?

Considering that the ship itself is just the skeleton with some stats, and you really customize it with equipment you affix to it, and with your BOs .... I don't think we'll have any problems with variety.

I'm sure there's enough variables to allow for 100s of 1000s of unique configurations.

From that ZAM article....

There will be three different types of ships at launch: Escort for offense, Cruiser for general purposes, and Science for deflector dish powers. There will be four tiers of ships at launch, and you'll be able to push your starter ship "pretty far" into the next tier, but it won't be able to compete against the highest tiers. There will be 16 different configurations of ships on the Federation side at launch, and each will have a ship or two from Star Trek canon to provide its basic look while still being customizable.

Four Tiers, 4 configurations per Tier, 16 configurations.

I'm still wondering how this will relate to the Klingon side.

Maybe there won't be as many configs for them, I'd guess they could cut down on some of the science based vessels.

In at least one article (or maybe it was an Ask Cryptic) but they made it sound as though the Klingon side will have all the classic Klingon ships as well as ships that follow the "look" of the other races (Gorn, Orion, Naussican).

So hopefully we will see some non-Klingon ships in the Klingon faction, instead of just a Bird of Prey with "Gorn colors" or whatever.

I think we should all wait a little longer on this topic. The beta is almost here and we should have some solid info then.

The devs said themselves that their terminology is very confusing right now. Some of us in another thread have determined from the dev chats though, that when you customize one of the 16 base "Configurations" you create a new "Class" using their terminology. Therefore there will be Thousands of ship "Classes" based on players preferences.

But the terminology might change when everything is made official.
