Seriously. We have constant trolls coming in. We had to ask the IRCops in #irchelp for help two times today. Thats... quite a bit. We NEED more mods. Soon. I nominate Deyvid, for one.

As the IRCop points out, you can give new moderators half-ops, so they can handle channel issues, without too much power.

I agree with this. We are severly lacking a proper amount of Moderators. Maybe give some users who are ofthen there Half-Op Status?

the irc channel had plenty of ops..... until people complained that they weren't cryptic staff.

Yeah we had two trolls in the span of.. well actually they were both in the room at the same time. The main problem is when it comes to quitting time on the west coast and the Cryptic employees go home for the night. Then there's an influx of these people when the Cryptic guys are taking their (well-deserved) rest for the night.

Do i detect a note of irony here?

oh

wait

no

Its more like a friggen symphony.

But seriously, trolls/spammers are things i didnt tolerate in the old channel. Seriously degrades the quality.

I remember the discussion in these forums well .... people were upset about about who was running the channel and not agreeing with with their decisions on what to allow and not allow.

Its just like real life ... everyone wants cops on the street until they stop YOU. LOL!

So now we have fewer, more flexible cops ... and you get what you get.

Either we want heavy handed enforcement, knowing what goes with that ... or we want less, more flexible, enforcement and deal with this kind of thing.

I personally just opt to ignore the trolls. The problem is ... most just keep responding to them, which puts you on a one-sided phone call if you will.

:D

Actually, Bacial, it is more like the moderators are on vacation, so the trolls are taking advantage.

Normally, the IRC is moderated very well. Deerang and Wishy have kept it a very enjoyable place.

I know loekii, just had to be said.

But this issue was actually talked about when the move was made. Its cool that cryptic is in the IRC more and they're running it, but i knew that they werent going to hire 24/7 mods, so this issue was bound to pop up. Either not enough mods when they go sleepy or mods that arent cryptic, which is what the initial complaint was about. I dunno, just found it ironic

And to be honest, most people dont know what was going on behind the scenes as far as the old channel was concerned, as far as interactions with cryptic is concerned. I wont bore you all with that here, but I will say that i did the best i could with the help that i was or was not given from Cryptic. :D

the problem with the old room was not who was Modding it (well in some case), but rather tha lack of any consistant rules. we may have a lack of Ops right now, but at least we have solid rules and an avenue of recourse if we beleive someone in power is violating those rules.

so Yes we need more ops, but at least we have consistant laws to abide by :)

On a side note, can we please have people put thier fleet Tags at the end of their names, it makes it harder to respond to a person in a fast moving conversation if we have to type out [***]X..... first.

Deyvid

Yeah today was pretty bad. Words and comments that would be R and approaching X being thrown around in the chat, with obscene comments directed at regular chat members. There are also other times when WebGuests or others from different Coldfront rooms come and use language or make comments that are against chat rules.

I would not disparage deerang, he does a good job, when he's present -- but there are times when he is away, and understandably has to sleep at times. There are times when there basically no ops or mods in the room, often beginning around 10pm PT and all night even though the room is often active during that time.

It honestly can be more than one op/half-op can handle at times. It would be nice to have multiple ops/half-ops at times, or even one-at-a-time but multiple ops/half-ops to take shifts.

I would be willing to help out, if chosen. There are a few regular chatters who would be trustworthy, and are usually in the chat for long periods including late evening and overnights.

Whether or not I would be asked to help, I do agree the room needs more Ops (or half-Ops).

My problem with the old channel was, was that it was run by a guild/fleet. This created a conflict of interest.

I don't have issues with half-ops being players from the game, as they will all have different interests at hart.

Deyvid

Regarding the fleet tags, I think the placement of it is up to each chatter. For me personally, I don't expect everyone to include the fleet tag when addressing me -- I often go by [BOK]Deyvid in the chat but chatters can just call me Deyvid or Deyv.

As it relates to possible ops/half-ops, I think fleet tags should not be used while the op/half-op is "on duty".

Zeroth

I agree with that Deyvid, no fleet tags while someone is a half-op. Oh and Bump.

I agree, a lot of people spam there all the time.

Ofcourse, who gets to have such responsibility?

Sounds like a problem mods could help solve... especially if spam is causing a problem.

also sounds like a problem the "regular users" are enabling ... think of the trollers as fishermen and alls your doing is having a big old bite of their bait and it encourages more of this flaming. Sounds like some need to get thicker hides.

That may be true in some cases. But at the same time, it's one thing to "not take the bait" but that does not mean the person should be allowed to continue to throw out obscene comments and profanity while the regulars look away. It needs to be dealt with by warning that offender, then kicking them, then if they return and continue that behavior, ban them.

Word. I tend to err on the side of less moderation, at least in IRC because it's such a free-flowing conversation, but clearly we need to increase some mod presence. One of our ops recently had a kid, so he's been less available than before. I'll see about adding more people to the op list.

Before people start volunteering, my IRC op rule is this:
If people start legitimately complaining about your actions, you're permabanned from both IRC and the forums. Just fair warning :p

Deyvid

Yes, unfortunately there again was a problem with the room, and no mods/ops around to deal with it.

A short time after the Trivia contest, starting at around 11:58am PT today, a chatter by the name of Viceroy started telling obvious racist jokes, that drew upon known negative racial stereotypes but replaced the race in question with "Klingon". This continued for about 15 minutes, with several regular chatters asking for warnings, for disciplinary action, but no ops / mods were actively monitoring the room. Deerang was either afk or having router issues, and Kinneas was afk (as Kinn_afk). Understandably, the Cryptic personnel are busy and not expected to watch the room.

In addition to these racist "jokes", there were also less-than-favorable comments made toward the homosexual community by a different chatter, and another chatter making repeated references to illegal substances.

The channel needs more ops / half-ops. The more ops/hops there are, the better the room would be watched (or at least more consistently, without the few ops all being afk at the same time). I have not asked for ops, and I'm not asking now, I only ask that the room gets more ops/half-ops to monitor the room better / more frequently. I am not disparaging deerang or Kinneas, I know they are good guys with the best interests of STO and the community in mind, but they can't monitor the room every minute, 24/7, as clearly seen here today.

The problem will continue to worsen as the we get nearer to beta, and launch -- unless preventative measures are taken to stop the inappropriate comments and behavior quickly when it arises. This will most likely become too much for only 2 ops to keep in check.

We don't want the #STO channel to become anything like the #eve-online channel.

Thanks Rekhan. This is good to hear.

Congrats to the new daddy!

If called upon to serve, I would answer the call. ;) I wonder if Cryptic would trust a Klingon in the current climate of STO. :p

Those guys are always entertaining. lol

Gratz on the OP Deyvid! You'll make a fine mod, I'm sure.

If anyone doesn't know, Deyvid is one of the members of the community I hold in the highest regard. His knowledge of all things Klingon/ST and his generally awesome attitude make for some great time in IRC. You truly are an honorable Klingon (and i believe the first Klingon to be OPed, Qapla'!)

i whole hartedely agree, and it seams to be on wedsdays with the trivia and also on the weekends, man this holoday was a rough one, now i know sometimes its hard to tell and there are some people that like to play with that line

personely i dont want to be a modd but i can think of some members of the community that have been around long enugh to deserve it

also yes i agree with rekhan that if you would not say it on the forum for fear of banning than keep it out of the IRC, for im tired of people causing havoc and thinking that they are untouchable

so tam if you still have that chart that shows peek activity that would be great for the devs

oh and congrats to the new father

And thanks to Rekhan for bestowing the honor upon me and entrusting a Klingon with the responsibility. I am honored to serve the Empire, er, I mean Cryptic, and will endeavor to do a good job.

Congrats to the other new ops too!
