The Miranda-class was still in operation during all of the 24th century as well, doesn't surprise me that its still there in the early 25th century.

It may be average, it may not have anything special, but i still think it's a good screen. I love that model reliant, if we could loose the trails it would be the perfect cruiser.

If I remember correctly they said that originally there were no trails on the ships, but people were having a hard time determining directions so they added the trail in. You should be able to turn them off in the options.

Ditto, I don't like the trails either. But I could see them being useful turned on in PVP.

If that's the case, then wouldn't it be an advantage to not have trails on so your enemy has to guess your course? or is that just from your perspective and not theirs?

Sad to say that people like Nic and Poseidon would probably still find it cartoony and of an inferior engine. Well... nic would.

I am not sure if others would see your trails or not, but I am guessing they would. I do not know how advantageous turning them off would be if it doesn't change what others see. I imaging it will be like many options you can turn off in other games; even if you can't see the effects, others with the options still on should be able to see them.

I know this will probably be heresy, but the Miranda class was the only Federation ship I liked until the Defiant class was introduced. Those are the only two ships I would fly in the Federation faction.

It that was the case the combat bonus would not exist, which would make sense considering it would be called an exploit.
I might turn trails off if I wanted to go and make screenshots of the game. otherwise i won't tie a hand behind my back just for athstetics

Your Tactical Officer would be constantly tracking your enemies course anyways, so the trails are just a quick gamey way to observe such. But seeing as how I doubt maneuvering involves real physics, there will be no "ship sliding" in space. So in this game, ship course can be easily determined by ship facing.

i like the trails as they give an aspect of colour into a black space background, but i can understand people who may not like them, :)
The fact that its optional gives us both they way wed like it to be :)
Its quite a nice ship for the federation starter ship !
I mean it was being proposed by perpetual that we would have a type 2 shuttle lol, so a whole miranda is quite a big step up, even if a miranda is low level compared to most modern day vessels. Its a big leap from a mere shuttle craft.

Yah, I've always liked the Miranda Class hull type. Based on the Reliant in Star Trek II, which is one of my fav movies.
Actually, I wouldn't have minded shuttles if we went through a "Star Fleet Academy" Tutorial. But looks like we're gonna shoved out the nest sooner than we expected, whether we got our space wings or not. :D

Yes, rear and forward torpedo launcher arm like the akira tho more than likely not as powerfull.
she must be able to house at least one BO as it was stated that we can get our first BO within an hour and a half of playing, after the character creater, academy, career path choice etc..
And i dont think we can unlock a new ship in that time, so shell be a general purpose, low level all rounder with a lean on being better to what ever BO we decide on's skills.
We know from Tamgros (thanks tam) that this is the starter ship for the feds..
Makes me wander what ships unlock as u get going. But then that would depend on Your career choice etc...
So poss one of 3 ships unlock from this one.

Yes i like the pushed out the nest phrase haha,
I am glad that we have something slightly capable, Tho im sure there will be quite a performance difference from the Miranda to the next ship we can get and so on and so on. An Nx91001 will be a world away from the miranda at the beginning.
Federation side will start off in the Starfleet academy and the Klingons will be in the Klingon Defence Force Training house,
And we wont be captains from the get go, well earn our stripes (i think as this was being thought on recently) tho we will be the captain of the ship if not by rank quite yet.
The more skill points we get as the captains, completing episodal content missions, then the more BO skill points we can distribute to our BO's. As we rank up our BO's we can unlock new ships or items or abilities.
(just typing that out i was excited lol - when can i play this game lol haha)

I'm guessing that "Engine Trails" will be a personal client-side option ... that is absolute. If you have them on, then you see yours and everyone's ... if you have them off, then you won't see them or anyone, including yourself. Most graphic rendering stuff is a personal setting.
Personally I'll keep them on ... I'm to old and slow to complicate things by having to second guess what direction a distant ship is going. And it appears the engine trails indicate turning as well (a curved trail being the indication). So I would see that as an important visual queue during the confusion of combat.

Most games and films show ships "close" to a star, so one side will always be well lit, and the unlit side pretty much pitch black. I always thought it would be cool for a game to put in "realistic" lighting, the contrast is very dramatic in my eyes.
Planets look great like that as well.
But I'm really fine either way, not complaining at all. :D

Well, remember there will be updates and the game is a work in progress, ive played eve for years, and the ships in eve didnt look that cool until the trinity engine, now after 14 ship based updates in total. EVE ships look pretty awesome.
STO game hasnt even finished or launched yet, never mind had a chance to update and upgrade content.
So all im saying is what ever its like, when we get it at launch, it will get better after a while with upgrades and updates!!!!:D

My question is why are there huge engines where the shuttle bays are supposed to be? It was one of the defining features of the Miranda, the big ole' 1 and 2 painted on the doors, the first fed ship ever shown to have multiple shuttle bays. and now there is just a generic grilled engine glowy area in its place? Boo I say!

I'd say they're illuminated, but they're not engines. If you notice there's no text at all on the ship while most film models have insignia, logos, NCC's and more splattered everywhere to be seen at every angle. Especially the big print ship name and registry on the bow.
It's just missing the 1 and 2
Edit: it does have the NCC on the nacelles, that's it though

Well, I think its pretty clear they are *supposed* to be propulsive components , as they have a grille texture to them, almost exactly like the warp engines themselves. and they glow the same color.

Well tjhe little red areas in the middle are as far as i know, impulse engines/thrusters but the blue bits are posibly docking bays .. or at least something other than the traditional engines id say..
impulse engines they are doing in red.. so this leaves them as possibly docking bays.
oh i just done some searching and heres your 1 & 2 shuttle bay picture and they are the same on the ship without the number

Well the problem is that we know what the shuttle bays are on the canon ship, but they appear not to be shuttle bays on the STO version. As I mentioned above, look at the screenshot, and look closely at where the doors should be. There is a horizontal pattern of lines exactly like the pattern you find on the warp engine grills on the same ship, and they happen to be glowing the exact same color. There *should* be doors, numbered 1 and 2 like the model you found, but they obviously are not doors in the STO screenshot.

Seriously. That was one of the things about space in SWG that annoyed me. There were asteroid fields and nebulas where there shouldn't really have been any. Besides, since the current definition of a planet includes a part about having a "clear orbit", it would appear we won't be visiting many "planets". :p

i would call it reusing textures instead of an extra engine. The horizontal lines are also seen on cannon images, it's how roll-up doors look. The only glitch is the appearance of a glow which may be strange.
If Cryptic intended it to be a warp engine, it would have trails with the nacelles.
Yeah the hangars aren't numbered, it's not the end of the world.
Yeah they seem to have a little glow on them, I'm willing to chalk that up to the colorful appearance they're giving ships in the game.
Yeah they have lines like a warp grille, well a warp grille looks like it has lines like a shuttlebay.
When STO launches, that would be one of the things to look for, the 1 & 2 on the doors. But I won't worry until then since it can all change tomorrow.

Im geussing that the devs have just thought blank space shots would be a bit duller than dense and dangerous astoroid fields ..
But im sure in exploration there will be places that are not littered with asteroids and crawling with asteroid belt raiders (they disguise there selfs as asteroids and attack players that get to close esp cargo ships - that call u for help in sto episodes)

Miranda is a good ship, I can't imagine it as a newbie ship. Perhaps a little more small ship like a shuttle is a better option for the beginning, but is only my opinion.

i think they thought that a smaller ship made getting capable to do very much took a lot longer, this way we get right into the low level action right away.also as size goes the Miranda is 243 meters. So she is a small ship.

The Miranda was one of my favourite ships for some time. I wish they would show the original version of it with the white paint job (TWOK style). I don't mind it being the starter though. As much as I like it its an old ship with its flaws not to mention its spiritual successor (Nebula) has to go somewhere.

Miranda is a great starter ship, you get a solid ship to use at the get-go. Doesn't make sense, to me, that enemies would be running around in shuttles, they are going to have decent ships.
