The gamespy article is a nice overview to anyone who isn't that familiar with the game. It also had a few interesting bits of information that i haven't seen anywhere else.

sweet! nice screens. Thanks.
I think the Cryptic PR people are doing a grand job with ST:O atm (even though it's not only them and I give credit to other sources); I can't believe it hasn't even been 24 hrs since they announce beta apps.

There's a Danube class Runabout in the first screen, nice! Also like the (more Starfleet like) rifles in the 5th screenshot.
Nice info, also, some new things about ship clases.
The only thing I didn't like is that screenshot with an alien officer with a yellow uniform that doesn't have a combadge. You need a combadge!

One thing that I keep seeing pop up in these articles is assigning typical MMORPG roles to the three different ship types:
Cruiser: Tanks
Science: Healer/Support
Escort: DPS
I thought it was stated pretty clearly early on that these classes were not going to conform to such types and that these kind of roles would be relatively meaningless in STO. Am I crazy or are previewers trying to shoe horn STO into standard MMO tropes to make it more comprehensible to their readers?

I hope that there is more to the list of selectable predefined Trek races then the ones that keep getting mentioned over and over again. It would really save time when I want to create my Tellarite character.. and i won't have to guess what parts the character needs for his facial features, etc.

I think it's probably just to keep the article short, because they'd have to otherwise dedicate space to all the 'buts...' and other caveats. Keeping it as they did allows them to give a quick impression of what the various classes are like.

Actually the screen shots of the indoor scenes interest me.
Why is it so dark on what appears to be Federation locations?
I seem to remember that the movies and series always had bright (positive) lighting for Federation/Starship settings, and the dark/shadowy lighting was used for the more ominous Kingon type settings.
I have absolutely no idea why this caught my attention ... it just did.

The Devs can try to make things different until they're blue in the face, but the standard MMO roles being what most people are familiar with, users will always find the closest possible analogue.
I thank you sir, I am looking even more forward to the release of this game with as much impatience and joy as anyone can have.

Nice find! I have to agree with the other people who say that this is a great article as far as giving a general overview of the game, so hopefully more people get to see it. The screenshots are always a plus too. Thank you for finding this and sharing it with the rest of the community!

Good eye =)
Cruisers : Constitution-, Cheyenne-, Galaxy-, and Sovereign-class ships.
Science : Nova, Olympic, Intrepid, and Luna ships.
Escort : Saber, Akira, Defiant, and Prometheus.
I can only imagine the countless variants for each. I'm hoping this is as awesome as it sounds =)

Oddly enough a lot of those match up to the various base "configurations" they've talked about, we'd need to add the Miranda to that list as well. If so, there should be three more configurations that haven't been mentioned yet. I can see where a lot of the more familiar starship classes will fit in though: Constellation under the Cheyenne config, Nebula under the Luna config and so on.

Nice read. The thing that sticks out to me and that is really encouraging is that this review (and most others) seem to say space combat and the controls work well and are fun. Sounds like they need to tune the ground experience. With 6 months (at least) to go they have time to get that part improved as well. Hopefully those in beta can give good feedback to get the ground game up to par with the space portion.

Coming too close to clusters of enemy ships would "pull" them over, just like how an aggro radius works in a traditional MMONot too sure what to make of this..

I have noticed that as well.
The Federation stuff seems to be too dark, cold, and not 'comfy' -- almost ENT, instead of TOS, TNG, VOY.
Enemies and allies tended to just run right up to each other at times, though. That's a big departure from the typical Star Trek shootout, where you'd expect to see both sides ducking behind crates and popping out to take shots with phasers.
This is a point that I share as well. It is one of the reasons I had hoped for a stronger 'cover' system, to emulate the ducking behind what ever, and taking snap shots with phasers --- instead of emulating western gun fights.

Not too sure what to make of this..
as for "mob pulls" that was a bit disappointing. Does this mean that everytime we chance upon ships they'll start firing? No hailig frequencies, no alternatives, nor stuff BEFORE combat? mmm.

I think that unlikely. Remember, this was a combat focused demo, not the game proper. I suspect that different 'Episodes' will have us hailing ships et al. And I remember the Devs at one point saying that there would almost always be a peaceful way out of a situation. If that remains true... all will be well.
