View Full Version : Is a 'respec'/new carreer possible for your captain char?

There is a thread up at the moment regarding carreer paths and which ships you should fly to be succesful in combat missions;
http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=25273

This thread made me wonder though, in WoW you basicly pick a class and then you're stuck with it, however you can respec your talent points as often as you want without any real handicaps.

I've been reading a lot about STO, but haven't really found an answer yet for this question;
Is it possible to keep your char and the progress you made in the game, while chosing a new carreer path?

From what I understand you get to spend points on basicly 3 trees; engineering, science and tactical. You can also branch into 2 or even all 3 trees, so you don't have to be exclusively a tactical captain but can go for a combination of tactical/ engineering.

My question though is if it's possible to undo your earlier chosen carreer path?
If you picked tactical and got pretty far in the game but you end up being really more attracted to engineering or science, would it then be possible to reset your spent points and start over again as a new carreer?

From a real life point of view it would make sense since people sometimes pick a new carreer path in real life as well, but then again irl you don't forget all your previously gained knowledge.
On the other hand this is a game and not a simulator and it would be understandable that Cryptic allows us to undo some choices rather then being stuck with them and forcing us to make a new char.

A second point that is not clear to me and got me pretty confused was a post from Cryptic that gave the suggestion that eventually you could master all 3 trees if you spent enough time playing. Does anybody know if this is true or is the amount of points you get to spend limited? Personally I hope for the last, but I'm lacking info to make up good judgement about Cryptics point of view on this.

A 3rd question; does anybody know if you can also respec your BO's, or if they even work with a similar system as your captain?

cryptic has had it in all there games in some form or another. They have it in champions so we can assume it will be here

From the recent Gamescon video, we learn that Captains won't be limited to the one career. For instance, Captains that choose to follow the Engineering discipline will be able to learn Tactical skills and Science skills. Tactical can learn Engineering and Science; and Science, Tactical and Engineering.

Which is similar to what is in SWG.

As for the number of points, that has yet to be revealed. But it's surely safe to assume that you won't have enough points to master 2 or 3 disciplines. That way you can either choose to Master a Discipline (Science, Engineering, Tactical) or where you can be well-rounded (Jack-of-all-Trades).

As for the third question, I think they said something like that.

Yeah most I already thought it'd work like that but I was not sure.
I didn't know about the 3rd question though. :)

Why not? Perhaps you need to master all three to be Admiral. :cool:

Gameplay wise I'm not sure it'd be a lot of fun.
It would also kill all need for an alternative character, other then having a different visual on your char.
I also think it's not very realistic, take Einstein for example, he mastered math but he wasn't that great in foreign languages. Nobody should be able to master everything. ;)

Its most likely going to be a MT item in CO. So I bet it will be a MT item in STO as well.

I figure that it will be similar to Eve. You can train whatever skills you want. That way if you decide you wanna go a different path you can just start training those skills, but you won't lose what you already have. After a long time you could eventually master all of the careers, but it will take significantly longer than just mastering one career.

look at my thread and youll see all 3 paths are possible at once
