Anyone remember that game? 1991 I think or 1990 by Interplay.
Pretty cool game. You basically had episodes in the game just like what cryptic is doing.
First mission in the game started with a battle simulation against another federation starship. Sulu then says starfleet is hailing. Admiral comes on screen, gives you your mission.
You select where to go. Which could be any planet, but if you go to the wrong planet, you play a random ship battle against any number of enemy ships.
So you arrive at the planet, beam down with spock and mccoy. Go about talking to people to solve the problem, shoot some klingon robots with phasers on the planet. WHo ha mission ends you beam back up and spock and mccoy crack jokes on the bridge.

If it genuinely sounded like 25th Anniversary and Judgment Rights, I would be ecstatic. Except, it only sounds like those games in nothing more than surface details. Those two games had multiple endings thanks the various actions during missions and the way the missions could end. Not to mention the final decision in Judgment Rights. Having fights (which just about every single game ever has) and calling missions episodes is meaningless unless we know what we do in those missions other than fighting and how our actions effect the game. If every mission has one final solution, and combat is the only way to advance the plot, then they've failed and the game is nothing like the two graphic adventures.

Star Trek, The 25th anniversary was my favorite Trek game of all time. It was the only Star Trek game that I really felt captured the Star Trek adventure.
I remember one particular part in that game where you had to melt some stone with a hand phaser so that you could dip a rod in it; in order to use it as a ground, where an electrical circuit was going nuts. Simple problem solving such as this made that game for me! I want to have to think even just a little in order to progress the plot.
Yes, if STO is like Star Trek, The 25 anniversary I too will be ecstatic.

I think we'd all be very lucky if the mission content kept this spirit. :)

I also loved Star Trek 25th Anniversary for the Nintendo and Star Trek TNG Echo of the Past for Sega...they had some fun problem solving in some of their missions as well.

I am hopeful that the mission content will be a lot more original than the standard MMO fare - go kill 10 klingon BoPs, beam down to the surface and collect 5 batleths off of dead warriors and deliver them to starbase 315. I'd like to see true dramatic tension - the really tough choices a commanding officer needs to make (Save your crewman at the risk of increasing tensions with a race you just contacted, for example).

So here comes he curmudgeon in me again ... dream on guys ... this is just going to be another MMO, with typical MMO quests.
There might be options to solving the various quests ... but that's not new to MMOs.

With the shard system isnt it perfectly possible to create unique missions for players?

Well it's probably the optimist in me that says:
I believe we will get something similar to 25th Ann for the Episodic content. The procedural content will probably be a different animal entirely, but I see no reason why the Episodes can't be just as good as 25th Ann or Judgement Rites.

I just don't see it, atleast not from what we've seen so far and nothing that couldn't be equally applied to pretty much every other trek game made.
from what i've seen so far the first mission in 25th, if applied to sto game mechanics, would end with kirk shooting the colonists, the robots and the alien.
I'd like to believe they have more than combat, but until i see more than vague promises, i'm not seeing the connection.

From what I've seen so far of the game I'm pretty pleased. The early trailers are of course going to focus on combat situations, they are flashier, and more exciting to watch. I feel though the developer understands that Star Trek doesnt lend its license well to point and shoot games.

I really do not believe Cryptic Studio’s is going to take this license and make yet another standard MMO build in Trek Skin.
In my opinion, I think Cryptic Studio’s knows that they cannot do that with the Star Trek name. It is my belief also that they know about half of the Trek fan base will insure that the game gets terrible ratings and reviews if it does take up the typical MMO content of collect “X” amount of item and bring to location. Although, I would say that they can pull some of that type of content off- simply by having players escorting a diplomat or bring X amount of medical goods to the Andorian Star system for a medical emergency etc. However, missions such at that simply cannot be all that there is. We as a community will, I’m quite sure, demand more complexity than that.

Very well said.
