View Full Version : ST: Destiny soft canon - a place in ST Online?

I just finished reading the ST: Destiny series of paperbacks and the follow-up stories including ST: A Singular Destiny. It has a really engrossing storyline which, while not entirely compatible with the Path laid out for ST: Online leaves some intriguing possibilities, maybe for future expansions.
I guess I'm concerned that the Borg will be typecast as the only big bad villains to threaten the quadrant. The story arc laid down by this series of books allows the galaxy to 'evolve' into an even more interesting place. It would bring the Romulans and smaller nations (Tholians, Breen) more into the picture and would allow for some new mission types.
Discuss.
I hope not, I really really hope not. Destiny read like bad fan fiction with power creep and baddy escalation that went so far off the zany scale I had to put it down. I wouldn't be against characters or such appearing in the game, but it would be in everyone's best interest if the story lines of *all* the novels were completely disregarded.
That said, I share your concern about certain bad guys hogging the limelight. I would definitely like to know what the "minor" races are up to, especially considering that in the aftermath of the dominion war, they probably became a bit less minor.

I heard something along the line of only a couple ships taking on thousands of Borg cubes, among other travesties.
No go on the Destiny book story line, but I would like to see a Luna class in there somewhere =)

I haven't read the books to be honest but I read about the many worlds that were either devastated or destroyed from the events of this trilogy and i have to say that I'm not impressed. Not sure it has a fit in the new continuation of Trek lore.

The entire "Destiny Series" is a nice alternate reality read, but I wouldn't like to see the political and stability issues it made the center of its story ever in STO.
It doesn't fit and frankly it does not make sense. Sure, seeing some of the fan fiction ships would be cool maybe seeing some of the captains emerge in STO would be neat but I wouldn't want to see Destiny.

Some of the novels get outlandish in their events. Destiny took it too far in my opinion. There are alot of good novels out there though, and I'm glad to see Cryptic getting inspiration from them.

*** Spoiler alert ***
They use the transphasic torpedoes that Voyager used in the last episode to take many cubes down -- for some strange reason the Borg in future Janeway's time haven't adapted, but the Borg in 2381 *do* adapt rendering those future torpedoes useless... (Huh?!)
Picard's still a captain, Riker's captain of the Luna, and now Ezri Dax is a Captain. Every character more often than not seems to act 'out' of character. B4 is still... mostly B4.
Some telepaths manage to 'free' the Borg drones as a Deus Ex machina type ending ~ Yay, the feds win the Queen loses. 63 million people dead, many side-characters throughout the series' lost, 40% of Starfleet wiped out, Qo'nos quite decimated, and Romulus will take forever to recover from it's losses! Oh wait...
Agreed, not exactly the path for a future trek ~ with so many pieces (all of them) into play, it was not only odd, but didn't feel epic as it should have.

What happened to the Titen? Rikers first ship.

That's how I'm trying to look at it. It is NOT canon, but it's a nice alternate reality storyline.

The Titan was involved in making contact with the Caeliar who were pivotal in severing all the drone's link with the collective. Even though the Titan saved (some) of civilization, they essentially missed all the action.

I'm all for getting the Tholians, Breen, and other powers more involved.
I also wouldn't mind seeing less or none of the Borg. They are kinda played out to me, especially after reading Destiny.

Wow... poor synopsis.
Can't hope to change your opinion on the book, not because I don't want to but because it doesn't appear that you are even willing to give it any credit. Hence you leaving out some rather major plot events and calling them telepaths ;)
Anyways, I loved the books.
I originally picked them up with something close to disgust as they had again turned to the Borg.
And lets face it, after Voyagers gutting of the Borg they really weren't all that scary or even 'evil' anymore.
They were soft, almost seemed to gain a political agenda. And could be beaten by a single starship.
Or simply given a stern talking to and that was that.
The Destiny series puts the Borg back at the levels that they were during the TNG series, and then asks what would happen if the Borg were forced to evolve to survive rather then just continuing to assimilate?
Its a very Trek book, it has intense action, the lame drama and not so lame drama, fleet action, individual development, neatly ties all the ST series (Ent, TOS, TNG, DS9 and Voy) together.
The best part about this series is that they finally give the Borg an out.

That's a common mistake when you look at the Destiny Trilogy. If you are reffering to the event in the book i think you are then your wrong. It did not happen that way.

I agree. I was sick of seeing the borg as the antagonists of the previous books (resistance, Before Dishonor, Greater then the Sum). The Destiny series was very nice.
I can't see most of the events in Destiny being used as soft canon in this game however. There are too many differences between the novel timeline and the STO timeline now to make it properly fit in. I tend to think of the novel series as another alternate timeline.
I wouldnt mind seeing some aspects being used however. I would enjoy seeing the Luna and the Vesta class appear as vessels. Perhaps have the characters in the novels appearing in the game would work as well. Also maybe (just maybe) put the Caeliar in the game. That's kind of pushing it though in my opinion but it could be possible.
