View Full Version : Exporation...? Universe size...?

Amid all the thud and blunder of the new gameplay video (which was good, except ground combat needs a lot of work and ship weapon beams are way too fat), I would like to know two things:

1. Is exploration still a viable gameplay option? By that I mean can I take my Sovereign class and warp off to unexplored space and forget about the damn war and all its flashy lights and explosions? Or am I restricted to to missions: "go and explore here".

2. How big is the game "world" (universe)? Are we talking vast here? I so, how vast?

I apologise if these questions are "old hat", but I can find nothing but vague answers with "search"

Thanks.

You can simply go through the Galaxy and explore and find your own instanced systems where you can name planets and invite your mates over for tea. I think it is actually encouraged as ocasionally you will get your operations officer saying something like "picking up distress signal captain" which you can answer or choose to ignore (here's hoping for a karma system to punish the ignorers!)

From what I gather the Genesis system will, at random intervals, create new worlds and systems as you approach. It "sounds" as if you will be able to name said systems and that they will then become part of the world and others may find it after (but you are the ultimate cause of it's creation). So, from this we can infer the universe to be infinite for all intents and purposes. Fly as far as you want and make/discover new worlds, there's always more where they came from.

It is stated that some locations are static and I'd guess there will be a ton of those. But you will create new static worlds thru the act of exploration.

I hope there is a mechanism in game that detracts people from "deserting" the war effort. If starfleet/KDF calls upon a ship to assist in a war effort missio and that ship declines, i would assume there should be some kind of prestige/honour penalty

not sure how that can be implimented in a game like this without "herding" players too much into participating in the main story arch, but id like to see that as it would add more to immersion/canon IMO.

that said, i am very much looking forward to setting a course into uncharted space and seeing what i find...i could spend a considerable amount of game time doing that if the content/immersion is trek enough!

Well I saw yesterday on a German youtuve video that Eve online has something like 5,000 systems, so I would hope Cryptic can compete with this.

And by compete I mean at least double it :p

Technically they should. After all, even in the 25th Century, there is plenty of the Alpha and Beta quadrants left to be explored.

If you do get to name planets i truly hope there will be some kind of rules/moderation for it. I dont want to come across some planet named Leeroy Jenkins, heard enough of that crap in that game that shalt not be mentioned
