while i knew most of what was sain in the aritcle, i found out some things that i have been wanting to know. Like that you wont take hull damage unless your shields are depleted, shields go from green-yellow-red when dmg and that we have a action bar for ablilities such as repair.

I know, its funny that your hull doesnt take damage until a shield section is completely depleted because in the shows and such, they take hull damage while shields are still up as though shields only reduce the damage they take, from stronger weapons, while completely deflecting others. Its hard to create a game mechanic based on that though, but not impossible, Iwas expecting it to go all to shield and then to hull, no crossover(except maybe some special shield penetration weapon.

Dont think it would be that hard, just make modifiers, such as. If shield are lower then 50% a random damage between 20-30% leaks through to the hull, and the lower the shields the higher the "leakage" will be.

But its all to the developers how they want to implement it. Going for one layer at the time will be kinda interesstening, cause it gives the oportunity to maybe make shieldtanks (especial on fed side :D )

Flashing Red shields eh?

Pitstop II for the Commodore 64, cassette version, anyone?

"Oh no, my tyre's colour is shifting through the rainbow to a deep red, maybe I should change tyre next lap..."

It sounds crap , the writer of the article thinks it crap, and goes to great diplomatic lengths to not offend Cryptic.

You can route power to your ships' engines, weapons, or shields, the latter of which are currently represented as transparent, colored arcs surrounding your ship's bow, stern, and two sides. In the current version of the game, shields appear green when at full power and undamaged, and when you begin to take fire to your shields, they'll change color to yellow, then red, and then will finally give way to nothing and your ship will begin taking direct damage to its hull.

It is clear that he is suggesting it's crap.

A modulating shield that 'wobbles' more the more dmg you take would be far more acceptable.

ps, crap

Well he/she is suggesting nothing... that is just a make up from you to underline your oppinion... he just states how it is currently...
You may find that ******... your right but please don't try to fool around and try to let your oppinion sound "more important"...

Lots of games have used that sort of system. For example, ALL of the Star Wars Rogue Squadron games. Not to mention just about every other game (not so much since the 360 came out not that that is the reason) that has shields, shows shield health as green = healthy and red = about dead. Its a common mechanic, not the best but its there and reliable, and people understand it very readily without it needing to be explained too much.

That said, some burn-through damage would be kinda nice.

I am confused. I have read the article 3 times now and I do not see even the slightest possibility that he suggested that.

As for the shielding issue, yes bleed through would be cool, but they seem to be using the tried and true shielding method, there is nothing majorly wrong with that.

Yeah the author of the article isn't saying anything bad about the game.

I do agree some minor bleed through damage would be cool, but it isn't a big deal.

While the shield mechanic might be basic and such right now and at launch, they can always improve the system and tweak it, make it more complicated as the game grows and they can see where they and players would like it to head.
