I just wanted to ask your opinons on potential ship names I might use.

MOONCHILD (I'm an Iron Maiden fan)
SPACE WOLF
FORTITUDE
AVENGER
MAJESTIC

For an Intrepid class, which do you guys think is the best name?

I can tell you at least one of them I am considering on using.

I have a list of about 18 names I am thinking about using for the Fed, and about 9 for the Klings so far.

Not really sure what names I might go with. I don't even know if they will allow us to have ship mottos or not. If they do I am getting a list ready :D

Linda......my grandma Linda Bast.

Oh wait you meant BEST oh ok. I like those but you might need something a little more unique after a little while. I have a tendency to make up random names for stuff. Guess it will all be about finding something that fits with your ship. Good luck.

For an Intrepid class I vote for Majestic or Fortitude from your list. I also think you need a bigger list. Variety is the spice of life! I heard that somewhere..... ;-p

My vote is for Majestic. Though there was a Miranda-class by that name in DS9; it got pwned in the Dominion War.

If ever I get my hands on an Intrepid-class in game, I'm calling it the Sojourner, after the Mars probe (also a synonym of sorts for "wanderer" or "voyager").

Coincidentally, were I considering the Klingons, I'd love to know what "appetite for destruction" translates to in their language, and whether it would work well for a BoP or something. (Sorry, Iron Maiden-related tangent.)

Man thats a good point, if we are Klingon and name our ship, will it show up in English, or will they provide a Klingon translation. Be weird to see the IKS Deathdealer or something.

For the OP I like Fortitude, sounds like one of those classic names from the British navy in the age of sail.

I'll vote for Majestic for what its worth. It seems like it'll be a pretty common ship name thought. I have no idea what I would call a Federalli ship. The only thing I keep coming back to is USS Lookslikeaspoon which I don't intend to use.

Here's a related question. How would one going Klingon best name their ships if they are not fluent in Klingon? One wouldn't want to name their ship the Qu'Valanas and find out later on down the road that their name means "Fluffly Pet Tarq."

well if one day I get a NX-91001 type ship there are a few names i can think of one above all;

USS Leviathon
USS Crimson
USS Archangel
USS Riighteous
USS Vancouver

and wait for it...

USS Red October !!!!!!!!!!!

Of Course My Soverign class would be the USS Republic!

I won't give you my favorite names (the ones I want to use) but I did some research on names. I came up with a list of 80 ship names I liked, in about 30 minutes (no joke). Then I prioritized them. I won't give you my favorites, but here's some fun ones I came up with ...

U.S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald (A real ship that sunk, and song was written about it.)
U.S.S. Tombstone (A real town in Arizona).
U.S.S. Alamo (do I need to explain?)
U.S.S. Stonehenge (duh)
U.S.S. Monitor (a Civil War Sub)
U.S.S. Patton (for General George Patton)
U.S.S. Earp (for Wyatt Earp)
U.S.S. Bikini Island (Atomic Bomb Test Site)
U.S.S. Enola Gay (the plane that dropped the first Atomic Bomb)

Just google things that interest you, or is appropriate, like

10 Most famous battles, or 10 best Admirals, or 10 most famous ships ... stuff like that. You can come up with unique names that sound cool in minutes, if not seconds.

Good list, definetely got the historical angle working for it.

I think that USS Avenger is the best name for your ship.

BTW my list is:

For Federation starships:

USS Dragonia
USS Spyro
USS Thunderstar
USS Overlord
USS Paladin
USS Icestorm
USS Firehawk
USS Luna
USS Palomino XIII
USS Sepia

For Klingon starships:

IKS Warrior
IKS Fire blade
IKS Sword of Blood
IKS Thunderforce
IKS Hunter
IKS Qo'Nos
IKS Sto'Vo'Kor
IKS Blood river
IKS Kahless
IKS Martok

I only hope that there are no people that would use these names :D

Just a small niggle. The Monitor rode very low in the water, but she was still a surface ship. She was engaged in one of the first naval battles between ironclads when she and the Merrimac (spelling?) fought to a draw. The Hunley was the Civil War sub.

Thanks for all of the replies to my OP.

I was talking to one of my mates the other day and he's into Battlefleet Gothic and he gave me a list of more than 250 ship names. Added to some suggestions here, I've now got a list of nearly 280 names. Now all I've got to do is choose which one I like most.

well a name also depends on what you will be specializing in.

for example if your a science vessel you go for say a scientist(if you steal my name I will get you)or an explorer would have something like journey or adventure. Combat vessel are more Valiant or Courage.

I agree. If you have a bigger ship like a flagship, certain names stand out. Example. A Galaxy Class Ship with the name Odyssey. Compared to a smaller ship like an Intrepid named Pathfinder. Bigger Ships tend to have more "epic' names or at least Names that suite their size, but not always.

Don't forget the possibility of "imaginary" names. The game is set four centuries in the future so there will be scientists like Efram Cochrane who will need inventing and Prime Minister class escorts named for non-existent UFP politicians. The use of Vulcan for certain Starfleet vessels, too.

Well definitely not Space Wolf.

This is ridiculous. Have you heard the stories of what regular wolf merchandise and paraphernalia does for ones awesomeness? Now imagine that x10 because it's a SPACE wolf.

I'd go with Space Wolf for sure. And try and see if you can get a nonstandard uniform for your captain. Something with three wolves howling at a moon or something.

Here are some testimonials about the awesomeness of anything wolf related:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002HJ377A/183-4566709-5650404

Scroll down to the consumer reviews, that should set you all straight.

Your ship will be able to do many things with the name Space Wolf that only others will dream about:

1) Break warp 10
2) Blow up Borg cubes singlehandedly
3) Defeat the other faction and bring the entire quadrant to ever lasting peace.

Greek Gods for war ships - so Vesta, Hydra and (bagsy) Agamemnon
Science ships might be great interlectuals - Newton, Archemidies (sp?) or Einstein
Engineering will probably be Shakespear - Othello, MacBeth or Henry V

No idea for Klingon though!!!

i will take the names of my ships primarily out of mythology (romans, greeks, egypt, babylon)

my first ship will be named USS Seraph (as the seraphim from the holy bible, i guess an angel's name fits better to a smaller ship)
