I was talking it over with a few freinds and got to thinking, the time line we are going to be looking at should have a wealth of starship research of all kinds.
In the Star Trek world thus far we have seen a great deal of ships that have grabed our attention.
So I ask this, is the design of ships limited to one races technology?
Should it be or should we be able to mix it ?
Dont you think mixing it would look good?
Just asking your thoughts:cool:

The way that have talked about things, we should be able to get technology from the episodic quests we do. Say you save some aliens from a Klingon attack. After the battle, they offer you some tech for your help.

Yeah it's been implied that a lot of technology is going to be treated as loot or a tradeable commodity in-game.

I would not like to see large scale equipment being installed on our Star Ships that came from other factions or races; such as deflector dishes, warp engines, gun platforms and the like.
However, I would think it to be absolutely Trek-like and fun, to discover new technology and techniques that can upgrade our ships existing equipment etc.
A quick example: Captain Jonathan archer had a polymer installed on the Enterprise NX01 to protect it from Space anomalies. Upgrades such as this could be advantageous because you Star ship would be able to operate, without penalty, in hazardous space environments. Stuff like that seems very appropriate.
Other types of circumstantial upgrades, such as the Enterprise D’s first encounter with the Borg wherefore shield modulation was absolutely necessary. This is a technique type of upgrade. I could go on and on. However, these are prime examples that most Trek fans I feel can relate too.

"Shuttle Tydirium, what is your cargo and destination?"
"...parts and technical crew for the forest moon."

I don't know, I figure the tech modifications or whatnot would be handled similar to what was done in Starship Creator (some of you may recall that game) ... spots for particular systems -- i.e. one warp core, one type of impulse drive, X amount of crew quarters, X amount of specific labs, and so on -- and an energy budget dictating how well it will all function.

I don't know ... fly casual.

Man, Starship Creator! That game was cool. Too bad you couldn't do much with your ships after you made them. I remember spending a lot of time modifying them. Good times.

Some actual discoverable technologies would be nice. Like the top warp engine won't be available until some engineer reaches max skill and "discovers" it. The best torpedo won't be available until a tactical officer reaches max skill and "invents" it. These top techs will thus become available at different times on different servers. Having a special recognition as "Discoverer of the _______" on your server is a nice bonus.

I think you'll be able to use things from other races to give you slight advantages, but your weapon style will be mainly from your faction. Federation ships are basically armed with federation style gear(possibly inclusion of Farengi and whatnot because they joined the Federation) but they'll be adapted and more styled like federation things.
Klingons, use Klingon "style" things, even though they may have some little enhancements from other races, but remain generally Klingon. Perhaps we'll see Gorn ships and things integrated in to along with their weapons, whatever they are. Same goes for Orion.
Starship creator games were kinda fun, liked to mess around with them.

I really don't see why you couldn't use things you find via exploration and combat that you add to your inventory. This is an RPG after all and that's half of what RPGs are about, finding cool isht to keep and use. Voyager had all types of stuff on it that they discovered and acquired along the way. Why wouldn't you be able to do the same when you decide to go waaaaay out into unknown space for a while?
I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to use items and tech you pick up on your ship or for your character and BOs. You make friends with some alien race that has a new kind of torpedo, so you buy or trade for some. Some wrecked ship you find has stronger transporter tech, so you install it on your ship. You find a cache of alien phaser rifles and keep them as an option for your away teams.
It's not really much different than in Oblivion or WOW or anything else where you find 20 steel arrows, or 10 fire arrows.
