A comment in another thread about the Corellian Corvette in SWG got me thinking about the potential for space based instances in STO.
Wouldn't it be great to have small instanced space stations or manned relays to board and save like in several episodes of TNG? I don't know how much work it would be but it's already been confirmed we will see DS9 so the idea is already there, it just needs to be customised for instances.
It could even be done with ships. A good example is the Anarchy Online mission system. There's several different mission types. Kill, retrieve, observe and repair/sabotage (where you take an item to a point and use it on another item).
You could get an item retrieval mission that requires you to find a ship and disable it, then board it and fight your way through it to find a stolen item of some sort vital to Federation (or Klingon) security! Personally I think this sounds like a very fun encounter with multiple stages of missions that can be mixed and matched to keep the feel of repetition to a minimum.
Later on, depending on how ship interiors are implemented this could even be used in PvP.
How freakin cool would it be to get a Section 31 mission from a shady undercover NPC on DS9 that requires you to find another actual player in PvP territory, disable and board their ship and capture some technology for Federation intel or assassinate a specific member of their crew with minimal collateral damage. This could be worked into a mechanic where PvP actually effects the game world in some way, maybe some sort of territorial, neutral zone station based or planetary control?
Wow, this started out as a thread about instances and now these ideas have got me all excited... This would be my ideal Trek MMO...
Anyone thinking about posting about how PvP should not be in STO can go **** right off before even hitting reply. This isn't about whether or not we should have PvP. This is just discussing very specific ideas related to space structure based combat, take your whining elsewhere.
