A comment in another thread about the Corellian Corvette in SWG got me thinking about the potential for space based instances in STO.

Wouldn't it be great to have small instanced space stations or manned relays to board and save like in several episodes of TNG? I don't know how much work it would be but it's already been confirmed we will see DS9 so the idea is already there, it just needs to be customised for instances.

It could even be done with ships. A good example is the Anarchy Online mission system. There's several different mission types. Kill, retrieve, observe and repair/sabotage (where you take an item to a point and use it on another item).

You could get an item retrieval mission that requires you to find a ship and disable it, then board it and fight your way through it to find a stolen item of some sort vital to Federation (or Klingon) security! Personally I think this sounds like a very fun encounter with multiple stages of missions that can be mixed and matched to keep the feel of repetition to a minimum.

Later on, depending on how ship interiors are implemented this could even be used in PvP.

How freakin cool would it be to get a Section 31 mission from a shady undercover NPC on DS9 that requires you to find another actual player in PvP territory, disable and board their ship and capture some technology for Federation intel or assassinate a specific member of their crew with minimal collateral damage. This could be worked into a mechanic where PvP actually effects the game world in some way, maybe some sort of territorial, neutral zone station based or planetary control?

Wow, this started out as a thread about instances and now these ideas have got me all excited... This would be my ideal Trek MMO...

Anyone thinking about posting about how PvP should not be in STO can go **** right off before even hitting reply. This isn't about whether or not we should have PvP. This is just discussing very specific ideas related to space structure based combat, take your whining elsewhere.

I'm pretty sure they've confirmed that interiors will be in the game for quest based content. The trailer video in fact shows a boarding party, I"m not sure if the Fed or the Klingons in that instance are the players, but as we can see there are interiors for these purposed.

As Varrangian points out, I would be very surmised to not see scripted Ship Boarding episodes, as well as to not see say DS9 as a Static Station people can go to and walk around.

Ye, there will be interior and almost for sure boarding parties. It just makes sense that way, after so many of those situations in the series...

Not only that but stations that act like hubs are really no different than planets so there is no reason for them not to be in game. Plus they've said a few times DS9 is in the game.

This is true. I simply had a similar question in mind from another thread when answering this. I didn't mean to insinuate that there wouldn't be station interiors. I actually can't wait to hit DS9 myself, even though it wasn't my favorites series I did like the concept.

This would be something I think would be a big mistake for Cryptic to not include.

I think people are expecting Space Stations to act like 'cities' or 'towns', and their exclusion as such -- or just being non-ground content -- I think would really be an issue.

I am pretty confident they would fail to implement say DS9 at launch, etc.

..... captain, intercepting a transmission.....text only, it reads -- Gozer, vacation canceled, get back here and design DS9 content for release....... :P

If I remember right Zink refered to the mishions and "Arcs" where you will go to different locations with both space sections and ground sections. I really hope stations and ships are present as well. Some of my favorite movies and TNG episodes are where they go to stations and board ships. Like in Nemises where Data rescues Picard and they are running through the interior of the Scimitar. THAT would be and a cool mission. :)
