Whats going to prevent thousands of players from sitting in their ships around some star base trying to sell their items to each other as in WoW. Then while their all together chatting, a borg ship shows up to spoil the party and everyone opens fire. Talk about mayhem. How is this going to be prevented.

Actually, that sounds pretty awesome. :p

But we don't even know if that's going to happen as we don't know if there will be an auction house or how many there will be or much around what your worrying about...

Action House, in the star bases I asume. Most interaction as such will be in public areas, not in the middle of space. Although, who really knows.

Action House.... *snip*

I've heard that's what Chuck Norris calls his home.

I see no bad things in what youre saying. As tamgros says, it would just be awesome.

I think its more about hordes of ppl standing around shouting all day which ruins the atmosphere when you go to AH

Perhaps including a random Borg attack in your example was a bad idea. It only made it sound awesome. I understand what you mean though. Even with auction houses people would still hang around town centers shouting "WTS xxx" in WoW. I personally didn't mind it. Perhaps starbases will be more like DS9 with a promenade so selling things isn't immersion breaking.

that did sound pretty awesome but i think you mean this:

"Whats going to prevent thousands of players from sitting in their ships around some star base trying to sell their items to each other as in WoW. Then while their all together chatting, a borg ship shows up to spoil the party but no-one opens fire and whoever comes to the starbase for repairs and resupply get blown up because the people docked on the starbase are not that bothered"

doesnt sound so awesome now does it? ;)

hopefully it wont happen but there isnt much to stop people from hanging around a starbase

I do think that so called trade channels effectivly get abandoned because people get more coverage using a regional or global channel.

Its one of the things which always anoys me in games, where there is inplace a system to sell goods at a auction house or merchants or houses or whatever. But they still spend 2 hours broadcasting the same thing over and over and over again.

i say have a trade channel for people to sell stuff have an auction house you can check . BUT have infractions of people using region chat for trade result in a short term chat ban on using that channel. (say a day or so) then if they do it again ban the account for a day and if they continue then just boot them from the game.

IM a bit harsh but thats what im like, i just think people who sell stuff over global channels are incredibly lazy just stick it on the auction house set a price you think is fair OR undercut everyone else (like me) and your stuff will sell, but stand out in the open going "selling stuff" and you will be on my ignore list before you finish hawking the crap your selling.

Ummm.... why, in a setting where communication and access to information occurs over millions of kilometers, would anyone NEED to go to a PHYSICAL location to begin with? Wouldn't players, in theory, be able to browse "auctions" from the comfort of a console on a ship, then head to the location the item is being sold, and beam it aboard? Markets will be fun for co-mingling, but I imagine they'll also be easily avoidable.

Also, in a society without currency (generally speaking, Ferengi use latinum, but it's not a universal currency), why would thre be auction houses at all? And what will be in place as a means of payment? Barter system?

They should make space stations where u have to dock the ship and it goes into "transporter stasis" or watever and u walk around on foot and go to the auction houses. this would save alot of the issues of having 100's of ships moving around bumping each other. But one thing i would like to know is what would people have to to trade to others, or will the items all be self obtainable?
