What about the background music for STO? Do we get some actual movie and series music, or do we have to listen to garbage like what was in Star Trek Legacy (or what was in the character creation video for that matter)?

Also, it would be great if we could add our own music to the game. For instance, you enter into a battle and Fight Night from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon starts playing. Or, if there is a legal problem with putting actual Trek music into the game, we could buy the music ourselves and put it in our personal playlist for the game, bybassing those legal issues.

SOOO.... Whadeyathink?

It'll take a little extra work on your part, but you could just turn the sound down on STO and put your music on. Of course, things wouldn't happen automatically depending on the situation...

I'm not sure how much of the old ST music they are using, but the are for sure making new scores. Zinc has talked about how their sound guy is amazing. I'd look at the trailer if you want a reference...

The one score they must have in the game is this when the enterprise confronts Kahn the first time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7BsRGnJXQk

Could be like MxO and have ingame "radio", it could play streaming URLs for player run radio stations or play a saved playlist. I think there was option to list favourites to so you wouldn't have to keep typing out the URL/ location of the playlist. It just linked into WMP, so it couldn't be that hard to add.

I hope the game has a decent score anyway, it really adds something to a game if it has good atmospheric music for different siutations. One of MxOs actual good points was how well its score was done.

i hope it is nothing like the music in the character creation video because that was just horrible! a pure star wars rip.

perfect for exploration, but for combat with an unknown foe, you need good music like Surprise attack

Agreed. Horrible, I can't stand the Star Wars muisc and that is what it sounded like. Hire professional musicians. Hire a follower of Jerry Goldsmith.

Good star trek music is a must, they could pick and choose from quite a few trek scores aswell as make their own ones.

One thing i've noticed with trek games to date is none that i've played have used an actual orchestra for their music, it's usually some poor representation with some keyboard synthesizer that just doesn't quite give that orchestral feel that it's trying to approximate. Nothing beats the real thing for good music.

That and a nice slider, no matter how much music they have or how nice it is it eventually gets repetative and if there's good ambient sound i like to turn music off eventually. I also eventually turn it off because i like playing games in a window and watching a tv show beside it, i do this a LOT and i can easily see myself watching episodes of trek as i play STO.

There should also be seperate sliders for music score and ambient music, a song playing on a jukebox in a bar is different in that it adds to the ambient sound rather than being a seperate score that only you really experience (everyones music is usually at a different point of the piece so you don't really experience it together), i see quite a few games that lump both into the same slider.

I've gotten to the point in one game where i went into its system files and deleted all the music scores except for the ambient music just so i could hear one and not the other, i find it very annoying to have to go to those lengths and doubt i'd be able to do this with an mmo anyways.

Yay with everyone griping about the Character creation music ~ I hated it too =)

Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner ~ These are the musicians that should be followed as some true inspiration for STO's ambience =)

i did quite like Bridge Commander's music. seemed to fit the game and Star Trek in general :) wouldent mind to seeing some of it being in STO (although that wont happen since it is different companys and what not)

I will not be listening to trek music while I play, but I do agree that they should try to include some authentic trek music for those that want to listen to it while playing

I know this is a hypothetical but

When ship Interiors are added I want this to play in my Quarters/ready room

It should sometimes be coming from a random jeffrey's tube while you're in engineering :D

But yes, Dennis McCarthy and Jay Chataway make good references for good trek music as well =)

Maybe the guy who did the music for Star Trek: First Contact could be brought on board. He was flawless with his soundtrack for the movie. I get chills when I hear 39.1 degrees Celsius.

although i completly agree with you, it would be hard since he died in 2004. Jerry Goldsmith would be the guy.

In almost every game I ever play I just shut off the background music and play my own. I do like that on a lot of Xbox games you can just play whatever is on your hard drive, I think in STO this might be a good idea. Cut development time and cost, let the people jam out to whatever they like.
