You might as well call that a Miranda-class ship. It's hugely recognizable.

Abrams had probably never heard of the defiant class...

Not to mention they didn't exist anywhere during the timeline of the movie

nope but there was a USS Defiant in TOS that dissapeared (as touched upon in Enterprise)

What does this have to do with anything? There was a Constitution-class ship called the USS Defiant and they just switched it to Miranda. Abrams watched like all of Star Trek in preparation for this movie too.

I'm guessing you're completely wrong. The changed events could have easily made the name Defiant be assigned to a different ship. I'm guessing the ship was named USS Defiant because of both the Defiant in TOS era and DS9.

No you didn't. I read your mind! You meant the opposite. You though the USS Defiant was a Klingon ship! I KNOW THE TRUTH!!!

JJ didn't do ay research other than the sterotypes already known, it's obvious he didn't care except how to pad his wallet with yet another crappy movie that people flocked to like mindless sheep.

JJ Abrams' homage to Wrath of Khan's Miranda-class, with a famous Trek starship name thrown in for good measure, methinks.

or for the more realistic viewpoint: a homage to the Miranda class with the name of another Consitution class vessel which was in operation in the same era as the TOS

I like it, they did a nice job with that USS Defiant, and it does look like a JJ-verse Miranda.

The Constellation and Intrepid were also TOS-era ships before they became new starship classes.

Maybe the Miranda USS Defiant was destroyed saving a planet or two so they named a Constitution-class ship Defiant. And yes they've demonstrated that they don't always us letters or the same registry for the next in a line.

The USS Prometheus was a Nebula-class ship before the Prometheus class came along.

I imagine you mean " the more in-universe viewpoint" as, y'know, Star Trek isn't actually real, Ian :p

And yes, I know all about the TOS Defiant. I'm older than you think (though not as old as some of the posters here seem to think).

Cheers,

That same names to tend to get used over and over again. Truthfully starfleet doesn't seem to be overly creative with its ship naming.

This explains the use of the name.

The newton looks good, i hope there's a similar config in STO.
