I've seen official dev posts on why they closed down several forums and merged them with others. OK at least you have commented. But why did you remove our post counts. Was it because you thought we were using it to rank each other. Was it because you wanted to conduct a strange psychological experiment to see how we would react. I think we deserve answers once and for all

Because they don't matter, except to pad egos?

Doesn't bother me one bit. I wonder why post counts really matter to people.

I'm pretty sure the "Dev Tracker" section of the forum still works, because I jused used it:

Hey! This is unacceptable behaviour guys!

We got rid of the post counts because we wanted everyone to be treated equally. There isn't a good reason to have post counts from this side of things and it also helps suppress trollish activity.

WE know those of you that were here first. We can still see when your join date was. You are ALL important to us, so flaming the bejesus out of this thread isn't going to help matters. So calm down and let's discuss something more important.. like the game. :) I'll see you in another thread!

Also, be nice to the moderators.

Good lord, I can't believe people care so much about a stupid post count...and all the loud noise just proves that they did the right thing.

Agreed, in every possible capacity...:)

Well I do not think anyone really cares.

I get really tempted to start using absurd comparisons, but generally those start arguements.

I have to agree here. Post counts encourage spam or pointless posts. Other times, someone with 2002391230 posts will treat another poor schmo with disrespect because he only has 100 posts.

We still have "senior member" and whatnot.

Post counts don't matter.... At all...

I don't see why people care so much

I actually had a very good use for post counts. Seeing someone with a 4 digit post count let me know ahead of time they most likely had what I look at as “STO cabin-fever.”

It was a good way to spot who was a fan and who was writing “All Kobayashi Maru and no videos make Jack a dull boy” all over their walls.

You have 165 posts
I have 101 posts

We're both only 3-digiters :/

When I saw mine getting towards 99 I was like ug, that feels like way too much attention to pay to a game that hasn’t even been made yet.

I’ve seen at least one 5-digit count.

Wait you just joined this month and you’re in triple digits? Good luck with allllll that Mr. Torrance.

So a protest against an action proves that said action was good idea. What weird nation do you live in?

yup that is pretty much the reason there :)

i had a large one and instead of being taken more seriously and what not people just started to ignore my posts :( but now it's gone i have been increasing my activity again :)

If you quote this, Please Quote it in it's entirety, so that you are not taking my statements out of context

If you believe it has had an effect of discrimination, perhaps you'd like to enunciate that position, because personally that implies that there are people with high and low post counts that have been effected by this discrimination.

It's mostly an effort to curb post count envy... their has been plenty of that. Perhaps that is the discrimination. I would believe that.

Just look how eagerly this issue is stirring people up against it. On the other hand, If new members feel slighted like their opinions don't matter, or they are treated like alt trolls because people think they are new, they should realize that this community is not that shallow. If it is, moderate it. Other MMO games may have n00b abuse - and they removed the count - is that what is happening here?

I really don't see it. It is rather Ironic that you'll never get a moderator to suggest that removing the count prevents n00b abuse, yet that is the implication. Preferential treatment? n00b abuse? Whatever - moderate it, don't blame a number. Nonetheless I don't see it here anyway

Fine, I'm glad to see them go, bye bye angst
but the real reason was they did not provide enough benefit for the unreasonable grief and envy members were having over them.

Yep , it's just a little tool. I like the feature where if you look at a member's avatar it indicates online or not (we have that) , I like the tool that if you look up a member profile, it shows what thread they are reading (helps if you think you'll need to respond to something he is writing)

But they're just little tools, hardly worth worrying about the philosophies of how they are used

Um, wow. So much for so little. Does it really matter how big someone's post count is? Doesn't make them any more/less credible. heh...A man should be measured by what he says not by how long he has been talking.

So sorry, the bigger post contest is gone.

I feel KO_Gillihan has a point. I'd rather see more moderation than side ways of preventing member abuse. But I guess it would kill Cryptic to hire some forum members as mods.

It is hard to believe I know, but I spend suprisingly little time on the forum, maybe an hour a couple days a week just reading over stuff. I spend most of my time playing WOW, Eve, and with my puppy

While i don't think its important enough to merit anger, I do understand why Post counts are actually useful.

So what if you joined in Mar 2007, if you only ever come here once a year and make no contribution. Who knows if you posted 10,000 posts helping the community and the game grow, or whether you just joined in the hope that an early join date would get you a beta test and have added nothing to the game.

Who knowsi f you joined 6 months ago and have helped push the game, its content, its community forward by being a near constant presence on the board, helping, explaining, suggesting and even at times criticising.

While the Devs may know, we as a community do not. People arriving have nothing by which to judge other members on whether they made any commitment to the game at all, been of any value, should be listened to or not, other then on the basis of a single post.

If someone posts a message, as an example.

"This is a rubbish system, shouldn't be used."

Should a new member listen to that person, give value to that opinion of the system?

A post count gave us that. It gave us a way to judge a person contribution to the forum and therefore the community and it gave us a way to give value to their opinion, and whether you like it or not, we need to be able to judge other peoples opinions, we need to be able to gauge how useful someones comments are.

There are a lot of threads and a lot of differing opinions, it is rather impossible to read everything and give each opinion a measured view and judge whether it is useful.

Contribution to the community over the long run is a useful tool for weeding out those who just turned up and know nothing or have not contributed enough to be worth listening to.
