I have a few questions?

1. Will the Federation actually have a chain of command that is run by players and functional? The same with the Klingons and their houses? I ask this because most faction based games forget this part and there is no organization whatsoever leaving new players completely devode of guidance and protection.

2. Are top tier ships limited in number? I ask this because Eve online evolved into a capitol ship game where if you didn't have the big ships you were just a target. Or worse just a number for a doomsday weapon.

I ask these questions after having played many games and having been dissapointed with the execution of these games.

1. no. There are ranks...but they mean nothing for a "command structure". There are "fleets" but that also is only if u join, and they are not interrelated, so its like a guild. And there are Admirals....but they have no authority.

2. Yes.....kinda. Gozer has said each Tier has 3 configurations/variants. Each of those having 6 or so pieces to mix and match. But there is a limit. About 9 or so "classes" same as every other tier.

1) you can have player run fleets that are allowed to have their own ranks and such, there will also be an in game system that will determine your rank (probably through some sort of XP system)

2) I don't think so, but the top tier ships will probably be more diverse than EVE and easier to get to. Basically, in STO, people are supposed to get to the top level, so the devs are allowing for diversity at the top...

I highly doubt there will be a chain of command run by players except for in Fleets (guilds, clans). Typically everything that you need to do will be given by npc's. Some fleets may have a roleplaying structure that could act as if everything was decided by other players but you would need to get into a specific fleet for that sort of thing.

As far as we know, there will be serveral different top tier vessels you can choose from so it won't just be a matter of trying to get to the final ship since you will have options.

As nice as it might sound ...

1) You would NEVER get players to agree to a real in-game command structure.

2) You would find an in-game command structure NOT FUN.

3) I have yet to see a guild that at some point in time didn't end up with some snot-nosed 14 year old as their GM, who thought everyone else in the guild was there to abuse and demean ... which is why I only join casual guilds ... but can you imagine if they had it built into the game? /face_in_palm

I see your point, but I think you might be a little wrong. There was an IG command structure that sprang up in WWII Online and it worked out just fine. I think in the open PvP and competitive PvE aspects of this game, you could definitely see that come up, with different Fleets cooperating and coordinating with each other.

I'm not saying it WILL happen but I think it's likely and would work in that context.

Thank you for your answers I appreciate the time you took to write them. Based on these answers I will not be playing. I appreciate the time Cryptic has taken in this game but I have already played several games which had chaotic factions and its not really my thing. I remember EGA BAttletech and its in game RL chain of command and for those who don't know it was incredibly fun, entertaining and had purpose. Individual fleets is not what Star Trek was about... but thats a call the designers of this game should make I guess.

Well, there might be in the form of some of the Devs. Plus like I said, it could be possible that one springs up between the major player fleets.

Why do you think it's so important?
