So, we know we are going to be able to visit planets and stations and will likely be able to eventually walk around and hang out aboard our ships. This obviously has the potential to be a big part of the game in the sense of social interaction between players, BOs, and NPCs.

Personally I think it might be kind of nice to go on "shore leave" somewhere, like Risa or Pacifica or wherever. Would be kind of cool to have civilian outfits for you and your BOs to wear around too for certain occasions. Maybe they could have some mini-games to participate in, like hoverball or Parisi Squares or whatever that game is called. Maybe you can go lose all your money at a Ferengi gambling establishment. Or you could hang out in the bar on your ship with your BOs and buddies. They could possibly even include missions here in order to make it a little more worthwhile.

For example, you are on leave on a planet and get an optional mission to participate in a major hoverball tournament. If you win, you get an award, and your crew gets a morale boost that lasts for a day causing them to work X% faster. Maybe one of the players offers to join you as a BO. Being an athlete they could have some good tactical skills and endurance, making him or her a decent candidate for away missions. Anyway you see where I'm going with this.

These could be really cool little additions to the game and those are just involving NPCs. There's a lot of possibilities out there for what players could do amongst themselves. I'm sure more than a few will try to get married IG or something and you could do this with NPCs in a number of other MMOs so don't be surprised if you see it in STO.

Either way I plan to try and get my character as smashed at the bar or on the beach as I've been known to get just because I think it'd be funny to see him passed out on the Promenade or something. Maybe he'll make some questionable decisions with one of his female BOs too...:D

I believe once we are all playing, the way we utilize these "Social Areas" will have a direct effect on decisions regarding our own ship's interiors.

If we're all busy completing quests and exploring, and stations and homeworlds are vacant, I just can't imagine them being eager to create a mechanic for us to socialize on our ships.

I vote for "friendly" batleth duels between Klingons in social areas. I suppose Feds could sit around drinking that Romulan ale they don't have.

this subject has came up a time or two ..

personally I'd prefer to be able to hop in my bass boat and do some serious fishing !

Of course .. someone will need to design an advanced rig of some sort ! Say a 21 footer with a Mercy 250 on the back ! .. 90 pound/trust trolling motor (pref 24v) , dual console , poly flake blue/silver ... gray carpet.

(just a suggestion of course)

:D

and yes ... I'm bored out of my mind right now .. my imagination is in over drive !

There's really a ton they could do with it, including the suggestions you guys all mentioned. I just remember previous RPGs I played that had things like this, Oblivion, Dungeon Siege, and it really helped immerse you into the game. Also gives you a break from the grind so to speak.

Definitely. This relates to the shuttlecraft racing idea I referred to.

It would give all of the players who play with a ship larger than a Defiant class a chance to play a small, fast, maneuverable ship fora while, something different than the large Sovereign or Galaxy class they are used to. Get that twitchy gameplay out of their system before they go back to their strategic, hulky battleship.

It would also be fairly easy to create recreational facilities on space stations much like Quark's tavern, where you could gamble (casino mini-games!) and socialize. Holodecks would go a long way as well, perhaps not on the player ships themselves, but on space stations. Would it really be that difficult to implement every game from "Wii Sports" into the world of Star Trek? ;) Nintendo certainly didn't have any difficulty whipping up a few fun little games, I see no reason that a company like Cryptic couldn't devote some time to creating little mini-games on the Holodeck, if not in time for release, then in future patches or expansions.

If you are a klingon then would you still get shore leave? with the klingons being cannibals and all, wouldn't their recreation habits be pretty gruesome? I would hate to end up in a bowl of blood worms because I strayed into a klingon camping ground.

Klingons are not cannibals. They're heavily meat eaters, but they don't eat one another.
Klingons do get shore leave, they aren't all "Fight, kill, and die". They do have families. I'd imagine most Klingon recreation involves hunting targ, spending time with loved ones, or telling stories over blood wine.

Targ Hunting, Blood Wine Chugging, Klingon Marriage Ceremonies. Yeah, there'd be recreation for the Klingons.

I think it might be a good idea for players and BOs to have a few social skills that they can work on in recreational and mission settings. Certain races like the Betazeds might even have a natural boost at this. So if you have a Betazed science officer, and he or she has developed their chatting or flirting skills or whatever, they might be able to get more concessions from locals on an away mission or in diplomatic talks.

hummm..... mini MMOs inside a MMO what could we think of next :D

holodecks ;)

Social activities is a part of Star Trek, it would be something new and most of it could be player driven if given the place to do so adding activities that would be considered competative. Or a chat room that can be visited like the bar in San Francisco outside of StarFleet academy.
