View Full Version : A Hint at the possible Map in STO

Ok so I was chatting to my friend (and admiral) 112310.
We were chatting over VoiP and he said something like
Him “Hey Neo, I think I might know what the map might be like”
Me “Oh, how did you come across this?”
Him “well I was watching that ‘Day as a Dev pod cast thing and I saw on Zincs wall in the background a map”

Screen Shot from the Video (http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk171/Neo-wolf06/542235.jpg)

He then told me where to find the video and after finding it myself I then asked
Me “So we need to get a better look at that map”
Him “Yea but I can’t find it anywhere on the internet”

When then proceeded to look for it and after a little while found it. I believe it’s a poster you can get from a star trek book, as I have held it in real life in a book store.

Biggest Map we could find (http://api.ning.com/files/vWoDzNc4Jze*RrqeXnnu5ADkeQMOvLqeJovKTLtdRfMmhpnoYZ mz*GY1nXfrfD0KKjLnIea1njOy8Rz64ju6Yjhaglg8smzW/Star_trek_map2.jpg)

Anyways this being the case, this maybe the most accurate map of the alpha quadrant we can get our hands on at the moment, at least until Cryptic tells us what the map is.

So with this in mind, even though STO may not be a carbon copy (for copyright reasons) we could see something like this.

It might also just be 'reference' or even 'fan art', and not an accurate reflection of the game map.

It could be, but it looks awfully big for a game world.

you see i could see that map (both linked ones) becoming the actual ingame map for travel across different sectors :)

would suit it well as it is pretty much the only good map we have of star trek around

also the one on the wall is the same as the one you linked only printed out :)

If it is from something else it is probably copyrighted. They could have the copyright...it just seems everyone makes their own new map so that don't have to get that entangled.

well they said that:
the galactic map would be 2D
the sector map would be semi 3D
and the system map would be full 3D

but regardless it will look awesome

That map has been around for a long time. It has to be for reference only.

I can tell you right now, if they threw something like that at the average player, they would just shut down the game and go watch TV.

Now, you section that up, present the information a spoonful at a time, and its totally usable.

Tibilicus127: Nah, of all the things I worry about in regard to this game .... the sheer size of the galaxy is not one of them. This game's galaxy/universe will be at least that big if not bigger. And they say it will still generate even more dynamic content.

That map could be represented in a surprising small amount of data (like a couple of gigabytes) Remember, you don't need all the detail data about all the entities you see on that map, just their location. Its when you get to that location the server would download (or load up) the detail information as you are waiting on the cut scene from dropping out of warp. Or they could seamlessly instance far reaches using "wormholes", stellar gates, and the like.

And when you have a Galaxy that size ... most of the information/data for those planets could be stored on an offline server that is only referenced when someone actually needs it. Which could be like once every 6 months.

Even with the emphasis on "exploration" in this game ... I think we'll all be pretty amazed at how much people pretty much stick to the same area. We're "herd" animals by nature. There will be the exception, and there will always be people exploring ... but for the most part, we'll "herd."

Yep, that's my take on it as well. Oh, the political lines might be pretty similar, but we're not going to see all of those star systems, no way. :)

I love that map, but I don't think anyone in the federation uses that all the time, they probably use one that applies to whatever sector/system they're in at the moment. ;)

I've seen that too, but I think it might be a little bit inaccurate based on what we hear about in the shows. I don't think the Federation extends that far to the Galactic North or past the Romulan and Klingon Empire on the East.

Personally I think this is a more accurate map, based on the shows and movies:

sorry to **** in ur cherios, but that has been mentioned several time already. The map is from the book "Star Trek Star Charts" ( i have a copy) its pretty detailed but its also a little off. you can also see the same exact maps here (http://www.ucip.org/science/newmaps/)

many of us are hoping that there might be a computerized or foldable map with any collectors edition

Basically it' the same map, if you overlay you can see that other areas in your list are detailed for regions. But anyway it gives an idea of the NT and how large it will be as well as unknown space for exploration. I just hope the unknown regions are not all PvP flaging or there is no point to calling it unexplored, there sould be dangers

that map is really old. they may use it for reference, but it wont show up exactly like that in the game. dont forget that the boarders have changed since that map was made.

well, hopefully the semi-3d part for the sector, and the galactic map are similar to the Astrometrics Lab in Voyager, IMO

THe map is cool. but the issue with it is that it puts Earth at the center. Its show alot of good information. but what we really need to do is post up the map that shows the milkyway and the 4 quadrents. I saw a good one on memory alpha.

Cardassia is on the other side of the federation. That means Klingons/Romulans have to travel through federation space to get to it. Doesn't always seem to match with the show

Through most of DS9 the Romulans and the Klingons are our allies.

And don't forget Space is 3D... the Klingon and Romulan Empires might expand "above" the Federation until the Cardassian Border and that would give serious problems on a 2D flat Map ;)

They are all really interesting maps, thanks folks.

One thing that interests me is tha fact the federation in split with a small part on the other side of Klingon space. It will be interesting to see how this works now fed / klingon are no longer friends.
