View Full Version : Who will PvP right away?

I am curious to know if anyone will go right into PvP as soon as they can? I understand there will be a short tutorial type thing so after that is what I mean. Anybody plan on skipping the early missions to go right into PvP with your starting vessel?
I am wondering because it is a thing that I might do if I am allowed. I don't need to reach max rank in 5 minutes and become the craziest most OP geared and rich guy on the server. I like knowing early how the PvP in the game is and I am hoping some feel the same way.
I ask because I don't want to be the only one venturing into PvP zones only to find that I am the only person there.
For anyone interested in PvP. When would you try it out first? Right away? After you get your second ship when you get to choose class?
I might as well answer my own questions so that I can at least get the ball rolling.
I would defentally go right into PvP after the small tutorial for at least a few hours depending on how many other people would participate and if we are even allowed. Then I would progress until I got to choose my class and ship. I would of course go try it out for awhile, and from there I would go back and forth between PvP and missions to progress. I find it helpful to jump into PvP as I progress because I get to see how other ship classes behave in a PvP situation. It helps in developing strategies against them and possibly giving you reason to make something else as an ALT later down the road.

To me, it depends on how it is implemented and what kind of gankfest vs actual fun it is. If it is anything like WAR's pvp (where you actually get experience to progress your character) then yeah, you'll be hard pressed to get me OUT of pvp.
If its anything close to WoW's pvp system then I'll avoid it like the plague.

PvP is usually poorly implemented in mmo's. If, as ngille wrote, there's going to be actual (even if small) rewards for participating, I will surely do it.
Nevertheless, I wouldn't get straight into it. I would surely wait to learn more about the game and have a starship that wouldn't throw bananas at enemy players.
I'm mostly waiting to try out the PvP involving the neutral zone, where you can acquire zones etc.
I still think that there's a chance there won't be enough players playing Klingons. As I have said in a previous post, the list of federation fleets is 3 times the size of that of klingons'.

I can easily see myslef participating in PvP fairly early. Not as early as I would of if i was running a Klingon crew but since I've found myself attached to a Federation fleet I'll probably meander out there within the first day or two instead of wipping my BoP out to hunt whatever I can sink my teeth into.

I wouldnt go into PVP right away, i would wait till i get my Akira class and learn some tricks in the game first.

Quickly as possible, tis the only reason I play MMOs :D
Maybe, maybe not. I usually enter MMO's late so I have a low level and the way PvP'ers behave usually confuses me, so, chances are, not really, unless they implement a combat system where something other than your level matters... which I doubt.

Early on near launch though everyones ships will be throwing bananas :) Unless you don't get it right away that is.

Sadly I probably won't be able to get it right away unless they offer some sort of digital download. The BX selection is quite sad and it takes them forever to get new games out here.

there are two certainties in this world: death and that someone will be much better than you in mmo's.

I hear ya. If they don't do a digital download (which i doubt), just preorder it on amazon or something once we get a reliable and official release date.
On PvP, I'm the king of player that likes to get as much as I can before doing PvP. So chances are I won't as long as there are missions to do. The only reason I could see myself doing PvP is if I get stuck on a mission and want to take a break from it for a while.

depends on the reward. I mean, pvp (in early stag) is useless, when you donīt get equip.Especially at the beginning, when you "level" up fast.....

If I PvP or not will entirely depend on how long I can tolerate the dumbed down combat system.

I'll try PVP as soon as I get out of the tutorial. After I get my butt kicked, then I'll probably learn to play the game better for a few days, and have another go at it. :)

Well, given the way PvP system has been explained to us, the Neutral Zones are all very well explored.....
.....which will see me going in completely the opposite direction. Not for fear of PvP, but I wish to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilisations, to boldly go where no Dogbert has gone before!!!
........That and I'd most probably resort to ramming speed far too often. Starfleet would get pretty annoyed if I constantly lost my ships with almost all hands (Almost, due to the fact my Bridge Crew appear to be made of solid Neutronium.......I tried setting one on fire, but the only damage was his uniform was a little scorched).

I plan on playing a Klingon, so it may be fun playing an over-aggressive low level grunt.
To me, the best PvP is never about reward. It's about spur of the moment fun with surprise and adaptation. When you're wandering around the world doing your own thing and then see a group of players battling it out. You jump into the fray to sway the balance. Or when you're attacked out of the blue and have to shift to a more active playstyle to defend your ground.
It's when PvP is mainly about reward and progression that I become bored. Then it's just another grind. Then it becomes about who has the best gear and the best spec, and less and less about skill and strategy(unless both parties are equally equipped, which is rarely the case outside of artificial systems). I think it's more exciting to make due with the tools you have instead of being prepped and spec'd primarily for it.
So, if I see a Federation ship wandering through my space while I'm killing space-rats, they better expect a fight. I'm a Klingon, not a carebear!

So much truth to these two paragraphs. It is when they start dropping the uber PvP gear, and start awarding special skills based on your PvP history (level, kills, wins, w/e) that games start to lose it for me.
Because now you have to choose the aspect of the game (PvE or PvP) you are going to play so that you can stay competitive, dedicating almost all your time to just that aspect.
And so many times that also means you have to choose who you will and will not play with. I actually had family members who played on the same WoW servers as I did, but I never played with them because I was a PvP'er and they weren't.
WoW did that and it broke the game for me. I could never find the justification for awarding special gear to someone just because they chose to PvP. What does it matter that I kill 100 ai Warlocks, or 100 player controlled Warlocks? An opponent is an opponent.
I do PvP. All my character we on a PvP server in WoW (Frostwolf then Frostmane), I went from WoW to an AoC PvP server, and now I'm playing Warhammer now. And I will PvP in STO.
But I am unmoving in my opinion that there should be no special rewards for PvP'ing. Bragging rights yes. Controls of some zone, sure. The ability to trade, repair, and generally use a Starbase that has been capured, absolutely. But a phaser is a phaser, impulse engines are impulse engines. NO SPECIAL GEAR.

when i finish the tutorial im gonna have a go at a mission see what the game is like then ill go to the pvp area no matter what my ship is like.
I think PvP, if done right, is fun for its own sake... but not in MMO's I've played so far.

If they do it anything like WWIIOL and some other MMOs where there are actual awards and benefits to participating AND it can change the map, then I'll be doing it all the time.
I plan on doing it right away anyway, but if it's redundant, stupid, and pointless I will stop. I plan on doing a lot of exploring too and a decent amount of PvE with that. I want to see what the science portion of this game has to offer just because it's something new. I also want to see if these "procedurally generated" civilizations are worth the torpedoes I'm targeting them with. :D

If I can camp out in the PVP zones and still gain experience - then I'll be there in the beginning and throughout.

Yourself stating being a PvP'er should know yourself that an opponent isn't just an opponent. An AI opponent is weak and predictable, an actual player is a much harder challenge.
The special gifts that comes out of PvP gives people an alternative way to get more advanced gear. If all I really wanted to do was PvP and I got no reward out of it at all then it would divert my focus to PvE until I had enough gear. PvP rewards give people reason to do it and without anyform of rewards far less people would participate.
In a faction vs faction game you are typically at war with the other. In a player vs player battle you are killing the opposing faction and making your own happy. Like commanders in real war, the more success they have the more medals and perks they get. We are helping our faction out by removing the enemies and we get rewarded for it.
EDIT: Missed a quote bracket.

I will probably be PvPing rather quick. I will take a few days to figure what is what, then see how badly I can get myself blown up. Hopefully taking some Feds with me.
Unless, I am a Beta person. If that is the case. I plan to spend most of my time working with PvP to help make sure it is fun for all sides.

So you say that there shouldn't be special rewards during pve, missions or not ?
What does it matter that you kill 100 player controlled warlocks or 100 ai warlocks, an opponent is an opponent and you shouldn't get anything in this instance either.

All depends how it plays out and works. As long I'm not confined to some 5 x 5 foot square of the Galaxy for PVP then I will be happy to PVP away. I'm hoping for a big PVP area, maybe a designated bit of a quadrant which isn't considered any ones territory, Kind of like a neutral strip except it's not really neutral.
Also off topic but beaver 8 your avatar is quality, I literally fell of my chair with laughter when I first saw that clip on tv..
I don't have anything against PvP rewards as long as they do not overshadow the PvE rewards or those of other activities.

I wouldn't go into PvP with a weakling ship if I knew the enemy had much more powerful vessels. I guess as long as you don't get a late start or fall behind too much in progression you would always have a ship on par with others and not really need a mega ship becuase nobody else will have one.
I actually wonder if character rank or ship tier will mean anything in PvP. I'm assuming NO to the open world pvp areas because anyone would be allowed in. Hopefully any potential PvP minigames would be based on rank so the battles would be fair.

:) Been considering replacing it with a picture of Generation 1 soundwave.
