Hi,

As this is my first post I'd like to say I'm very much looking forward to this game. I'm quite new to Star Trek, but I'm watching the tv-series and the movies and I can actually see me playing this game for quite a lot of time.

I was wondering though what kind of effect it would have concerning rp that each individual can create their own races. Wouldn't it be off-putting when you suddenly see the most weirdest races you've all never seen before, or at least be more difficult to rp than the standard races everybody is familiar with?

Now, I'm not saying I would prefer not having custom races, I think I actually would enjoy creating new races, but I'm just wondering what kind of effect it will have on the in-game community and rp-atmosphere.

I think it depends on ones ability to look at the Star Trek Universe, being more than the 'Enterprise'.

There are many members of the Federation, that simply were not 'Featured' in the films and or Series. For example, Andorrans really were not that featured, until ENT.

So from on RP sense, I would say its simply a matter of looking at custom races as, simply not featured in the Media, but still recognize them as members of the Federation.

Did you guys know that the SITH are part of the Federation?

I will take a good rper 'sith', than an UberD00d, any day.

From an 'RP' perspective, if the game mechanics doesn't really support the RPing, I usually just consider the 'toon' to be a bit 'off their rocker' ---- A glowy Sword that cuts through metal, but when asked to see it, 'its with your Hot Orion Girlfriend in Canda'. :D

In other words, I just assume the stuff that doesn't make sense in the STO, to be a toon being delusional, lying, exaggerating, etc.

New alien races were being introduced all of the time in the series, and with the majority of the galaxy being unexplored by the Federation or the Klingons, that leaves a lot of room for new species. I personally don't RP, but with an IP like Star Trek, I don't see what harm custom races could do to the RP environment. It's consistent with the IP.

While I expect the character creator to be mind-blowing (that's just what Cryptic does) I don't expect them to give you something where you can make a "the most wierdest races". I would expect a Human based race will always look human, and aside from subtle physical differences, the real composition of the race will be in the attributes/abilities you select for the character you are making.

Okay, this could seem mean, but have you ever actually seen a few episodes of Star Trek? That's only precisely what the shows tossed at you every week. If some ICRPers can't handle new aliens, aliens ripped from another fiction, or whatever, then they need to get off their high horse and go play a different game--by themselves.

I think most people are mature enough to handle a new type of taco without smashing it in disgust before even eating it and giving it a chance. There will always be a vocal minority who thinks their way is the only way, but they are a minority.

If you take the time to write something like a "style guide" for your race that outlines who the Madeupians are, where they're from, what they believe in, what is important to them, what they fear, what they hope to achieve in the cosmos, how they feel about other races, their mannerisms, their customs, etc., roleplaying shouldn't prove to be that difficult. And it could lead to some pretty interesting stuff, I think, as long as people take the time to be creative. Oh, and as long as they don't make their race "perfect", since that would be both lame and boring. Remember, people, it's our failures that makes us human, our flaws that make us interesting.

I wont mind seeing different or odd species in the game. What I don't want to see (but will) are species that are obviously just rip offs of other mythical creatures/races in gaming.

For example, we're gonna have hobbits, werewolves, vampires, night elf's, and orcs as "character created" species.

You know, you are probaply right. So, how many of you Star Trek fans are going to create new races or are you more likely to spend time as a non-custom race such as vulcan or klingon?

I'm not sure, I would want to play romulans, but because they aren't available I might make a vulcan character instead or just create my race of idealistic highly emotional death-worshiping space beings.

It will be interesting to see the spread.

I think its a good thing that so many are interested in the 'custom' race option, because I think in general, gamers are going to go with the Pre-mades.

Hopefully, Cryptic is not going overboard on the 'custom race' creator when populating the world.

I'll be creating a new race, flying a Klingon ship, and have my own House if possible to support my racial RP.

Same as Sobekeus, I'll probably be creating a new race, though some of the Klingon aligned races look cool. I'll be flying a Klingon-aligned ship, and I do know what I'll be doing for house and fleet stuff, though it will definitely reflect my race in RP.

While part of me would like to create a walking, talking, anamorphic duck........I think I'll probably be a human.
