Some of us on the STO fourms are Trekkers, others are gamers, and some are both. I've found that with any group, a ridiclous amount of acronyms are used to describe aspects of STO, gaming in general, and Star Trek in general.
Maybe it's just me (and I think of myself as fairly knowledgeable in thinks Trek and gamer related) but I seem to run into an acronym I don't recognize right away at least once a week. So, the point of this thread is to discuss the uses of the acronyms, and to try and post a list of acronyms commonly used here on the fourms

1k - 1 Kilo (meaning multiplied by 1,000. The 1 can be any number)

AFK - Away From Keyboard
Aggro - Means to Aggravate, or to get the attention of a MOB.
AI - Artificial Intelligence. Design term. Refers to the "intelligence" programmed into a game that controls the actions and reactions of NPCs, simulating independent intelligence.
AOE - Area of Effect
ATK - At The Keyboard
ATM - At The Moment
Avatar - The graphical representation of a player in a game.
BBL - Be Back Later
BD - base damage (the first of the two damage numbers on a weapon)
BER - Base Extraction Rate (refers to mining equipment speed)
Beta testing - One of the last phases of development of software in which final testing is performed, often involving external volunteer testers who help by reporting bugs and problems encountered.
BIO Break - (Bathroom break)
BN! - Be Nice (A warning used when someone is using an inappropriate tone or words.
BO - Buy Out Price (or Best Offer)
BRB - Be Right Back*<> BathRoom Break
BRT - Be right there
BT - Bank Tip
BTW - By the way
Buff or buffing - Gaming terms. Refer to preparatory actions taken prior to combat, usually involving the casting of spells/ use of medications or the equipment of items to increase stats. Generally refers to a temporary increase.
Bump or /bump - Typed in forum message body as a means to keep the thread listed at the top of the main page of the forum.
Camping - Gaming terms. Refers to the repeated killing of a re-spawning monster by the same individual or party, often for experience or often to gain items.
Carebear - A derogatory term for someone who does not wish to engage in player versus player activities.
Carebear squad - Usually a gank squad looking to kill a grieving gank squad.
CB - Combat Balance
CF - Combat Fatigue
Clown Patrol - group of players running around in fully looted armor pieces.
CMN - Cry More N00b
Consider, con - Command used to assess the strength of an opponent.
Cool down - Associated with special attacks and weapons, the time-delay where a special attack or weapon cannot be fired after it has previously been fired. Different items and attacks have separate cool downs are play a MAJOR role in combat.
CPU - Credits Per Unit
CSR - Customer Service Representative
CU - Combat Upgrade
CUL8R - I will See you Later
DB - Deathblow
DEV - Developers
Dewd or leetspeak - An abbreviated or encrypted chat code used by some gamers. There is some negative reaction toward its use and those who employ it, as it is often associated with disruptive gamers.
DoT - Damage Over Time. Refers to effects that, when placed on a target, cause continuous damage over a limited period of time.
DPS - Damage Per Second
DR*- Decay Resistance
ED - Elemental Damage (acid, cold, heat, electricity)
Emote - A command used for free-form expression of text appended to an avatar's name. For example, the command /emote has a bad feeling about this would result in the text: “Han has a bad feeling about this” being visible to all players nearby.
Emoticon - A convention used to express emotions through text in text-based games (sometimes referred to as smilies), and physical animations on avatars in newer graphics-based games such as an Imperial or Rebel symbol over the head of a player when and /emoticon is used.
EN - Energy a type of damage
EP, Exp, or XP - Experience Points. Gaming abbreviation.
EPS - Energy Per Shot (space weapons)
EQ - EverQuest. A massively multi-player online role-playing game from Sony Online Entertainment/Verant Interactive.
EU - Expanded Universe. The continuing Star Trek storyline, through official books, comics, computer games, stories and other products.
EULA - End User License Agreement
Exploit – Something in the game that is not used as normally designed. Often looked for and used by a player for personal gain.
FAC - Faction
Farming - A gaming term that refers to the act of gathering rewards (esp. equipment) repeatedly, usually for resale for personal gain.
Flame /flaming - The act of harshly rebutting someone (usually on message boards), often disparagingly.
Fly Text - the words or numbers that appear over the players heads such as damage indicators
Footprint - The amount of space player structure takes up on terrain map.
FOTM - Flavor of the month
FPS - First Person Shooter. A combat game, played from a first-person viewpoint, generally in a futuristic or science fiction genre. Examples: PlanetSide, Doom, Quake. (also Frames Per Second. A measure of the performance of the graphics engine in a 3d application. The higher your FPS, the smoother your experience will be.)
FTL - For the Loss
FTW - For the Win (used to describe an action or comment as being the decisive element of a conflict) for example, if a PVP’er runs over your Mine that you placed and dies, you might say “Mines FTW”
G2CU - Good to See you
g2g - got to go
Gank - A PvP gaming term that means to kill another player's character. Other usage: gankage (noun)--the process of ganking. ex. "The last point I want to make clear is that no matter what, random gankage is not going to be a feature of the game."
Gank squad - Group of people looking to fight other groups with *far fewer people in them
GC - groupchat, sometimes used as guildchat
GL - Guild Leader
GM - Game Master. An administrator that helps to facilitate gameplay. In commercial games, GMs are often customer service representatives that address player problems.
Grief play, griefer, grief player - Someone who purposefully seeks to ruin the enjoyment of others players.
Griefing - The act of hurting other players in a vengeful way. Or singling out a player or group of players and “picking” on them for a particular reason.
Grind - The act of repeatedly*killing lot's of *MOB's*(combat professions) or**crafting the same items (crafters) over long periods of time to un-naturally gain skill levels for your character.*
Grind, grinding - The act of doing a repetitive, often dull, act in the game merely in order to earn advancement.
HAHA - Meaning simulating laughing
Haxor – Refers to a player who does very well in combat and is either very well equipped with items and is so experienced in the game so it appears they are using an exploit. Or someone who actually uses exploits.
Hitbox - The area surrounding an attackable object that will register as a “hit”, when fired on.
HoT – Heal over Time
IBD*- In Before Deletion (refers to the fact that the poster thinks the OP will be*Deleted by the moderator)
IBL - In Before Lock (refers to the fact that the poster thinks the OP will be Locked by the moderator)
IGN - In-game Name

Incap - Incapacitation (Where your avatar becomes immobilized and vulnerable to being killed.)
Instance – A location or area that is used to divide up the number of players that are allowed into that area at one time. This is used to increase the number of bosses that are available to attack and to limit the number of times a player can go into a certain area.
JK - JJust Kidding
KIN - Kinetic a type of damage
Kiting - Gaming term. Refers to a style of combat in which a player continually stays out of the combat range of an enemy, usually by running from it, while simultaneously causing damage to it.
kk - OK <> Allright (Originated in EvrQuest Online players had to press K to bring up the chat menu and then k again to say ok)
KOS - Kill on Sight. Applied to player characters with respect to NPCs that might attack the player character in question. If you are KOS to a certain creature, it will attack you when it sees you.
KS - Kill Stealer (Refers to unscrupulous players who wait for another player to render a MOB half dead and then move in to take the kill. This is frowned upon heavily and if done by accident should be followed by an immediate apology.) It is often done maliciously as a DB to an incapped player in PVP.
L33t - elite (meaning very good / above normal yes you need 2 3's)
L8R - Later
Lag - Online gaming term. Latency experienced during play resulting from any of several difficulties, including Internet traffic and breakdowns, server-side problems, and/or client-side problems.
LD - Link Dead. Online gaming term. Refers to the state of a PC when the player has lost his or her Internet connection to their character.
Leetspeak – See Dewd
LEI - Looted Enhancement Item
LFG - Looking For Group. Also often refers to a flag that a player can toggle on themselves to indicate that they are looking for a group.
LMAO - Laugh My A$$ Off
LOL - Laugh out Loud
Loot - Gaming term. Alternately refers to either items or money retrieved from a vanquished foe, or the act of taking items or money from a defeated foe (as in looting a MOB). Variations: lewt, l3w7.
LOS - Line of Sight
LTB - Looking To Buy
LTS - Looking To Sell
LTT - Looking To Trade
LU - "Look up" means to inform the viewer to read up further in messages that were post just prior to that one and are now listed above it in the Chat tab.
LVL - Level
MA - Malleability
Mill - Million
Min - Minimum Bid
MMORPG - Massively Multi-Player Online Role Playing Game.
MOB - Mobile Object, (A MUD term originally, used to describe creatures in a game, whether NPCs, monsters, or others.)
MP - My Pleasure
NE1ON - Short for Anyone On? (Think license plate lingo)
Nerf - To reduce the power or effectiveness of an item, weapon, or skill. (Term comes from the differences in "real" sports equipment and their NERF sponge toy reproductions.)
Newb / Newbie - is not meant to be offensive. newb merely states that the person in question is new to the game/board/whatever. (Different than Noob)
NH - Newbie Helper. Either a player who has made a career out of helping new players acclimate themselves to the game, or a flag that a player can toggle on themselves so that newbies can find them if they need assistance.
NM – Not Much
No drop - Describes a quality of certain objects that prevent characters from dropping or trading them after they have picked them up. Also incorrectly refers in part to items that no longer appear as loot in the game.
Noob - is meant as an offensive term towards someone who is not necessarily new, and quite often is directed at someone that is |somewhat| experienced but at the same time acts stupid/disruptive and/or seems to be totally incapable of learning. A noob is almost always someone who thinks they're cool but obviously aren't. Also used in 1337speak.<> n00b, nub, ch00b, n00bo, n00blet
NP - no problem
NPC - Non-Player Character. Gaming abbreviation. Refers to any creature, or mob, not controlled by a player.
NVM – Never Mind (Meaning Forget it)
OIC - Oh I See <> o i c
OMFG - Oh My F***ing God
OMG - Oh My God
OMW - On My Way <> Oh My Word (rarely used)

OQ - Overall Quality
PC - Price Check
Perma, PD, PermaD - Permanent Death. In gaming, when a player's character dies and does not return to life or respawn at a designated location.
Pet - Refers to an NPC minion or creature under the control of either another NPC or a player.
PH - Place Holder, is a specific mob that when killed will spawn another mob, often is the case with Bosses.
Pker - Player Killer. A player who kills other players' characters randomly. It often has a negative connotation, applied to someone who kills excessively or by dubious means.
PnP - Pen and Paper. Chat abbreviation that refers to traditional role-playing games.
POB - Portible Object (official) Player On Board (slang)
POI - Point of Interest
POS - Piece of Shlt
Powerleveling - Gaming term. The act of helping a lower level player gain experience at an accelerated rate. Often with the low level player having to do nothing or little to gain the XP.
PROC - Short for Procedural (means a player has taken an action, such as use a special move or a weapon has fired off a built-in, random special attack )
Pull - To cause one Mob to leave a group of Mobs and agro you for the purpose of not causing all the mobs to agro you. Usually done with a ranged weapon at a distance.
PvE or PvM - Player versus Environment, or Player vs Monsters. A game environment in which players can attack and kill NPCs and MOBs.
PvP - Player versus Player. A game environment in which players are permitted to attack and kill one another's characters.
PvPer - Someone who focuses on killing other players' characters often.
PWND - Common typo for the word Owned, also known as Power Owned.
QFE - Quoted For Emphasis
Red-Name - Color of a forum name belonging to one of the Game Developers
REZ – Resurrection, meaning someone with the ability to resurrect can bring you back to life after you have been killed by a player or mob.
RL - Real Life
ROFL - Rolling on the Floor Laughing
RP – roleplay / roleplaying, A style of gaming in which the player speaks and acts as his or her character while playing the game.
RR - Recharge Rate (shields/capacitors) <> Re-fire Rate (weapons)
Rubberbanding - The act of “being ahead of the server” where, client side, you’re at one point but the server thinks you’re still at a point you previously were, and warps you back to that point.
SEA - Skill Enhancing Attachment
Snipe - The act of sniping, means to attack from far away with a gun or other ranged weapon (in-game) or a person who waits to bid on an auction until right before the auction time expires in an attempt to "steal" the bid.
Sp - Spelling (Meaning I am not sure how that is spelled)
Spawn - The regeneration of a creature after it leaves the game world. Sometimes referring to the location of the spot it is known to regenerate.
Static Spawn - MOBs that appear in the same place every time usually at set intervals or when the Place Holder is killed.
Stim - Short for Stimulator Pharmacutial, means medication or attribute buff item.
STO - Star Trek Online - THis game :)
SUB - Subscriptions
SWG - Star Wars Galaxies (edit... hehe left something here from the cut and paste by accident :P)
T2T - Toe to Toe (refers to a combat skill where you stay close to a ranged fighter because you are melee)
Tank - A player character that takes the brunt of attacks from an enemy for his or her party. Verb: To tank (tanking).
TC - Test Center
TEF - Temporary Enemy Flag
TEH - Very common typo for the word "The"
Tell - In a game, a form of direct global communication between two players only.
TFN - Trade Forums Noob
TH - Kurt "Thunderheart" Stangl Community Relations Manager (SOE) for SWG.
TMI – Too much Information, slang for the subject is not something you want to hear or talk about.
Train - A group of aggressive enemies that is pursuing a fleeing player character. Also used as a verb, as in "They trained the rancor onto me."
TS - Teamspeak (A voice over IP solution that some guilds use in conjunction with ingame chat.)
Twink - The act of giving powerful equipment to lower level characters who could not have obtained the equipment at their current level of advancement.
Twitch - A style of gameplay that requires manual dexterity, quick reflexes, and strong familiarity with the user interface for the player to perform skilled actions and responses.
TY - Thank You
TYVM – Thank You Very Much
Uber - the German word for above or over, has been adopted by English-speakers as a prefix meaning super or ultra. A chat term used to describe a player, association, item, MOB, etc. as exceptionally powerful.
Vent - Ventrillo (A voice over IP solution that some guilds use in conjunction with in-game chat.)
vet - Veteran
w/e - What ever
W00T – We Ownd the Other Team, an announcement of happiness, usually typed with two zero's instead of o's
WB - Welcome Back
WFN - What a F***ing Noob
WTB - Want To Buy

XP - Experience Points
Zone - Refers to an area within a game, or the act of moving between two areas within a game ("I'm zoning").
