So i thought i'd check back on this site after been away for a while only to see a new ship on the main page.
the Excalibur Class it looks like the new film version of a future star trek ship maybe picard times.
I want one!! it looks like the enterprise but different it has the classic long stilts connecting the warp engines to the hull which was allways one of my favorate ship designs :D
so what ships caught your eye on star trek or sto?

I'm on the Akira bandwagon, The fact that its supposed to have 15 torpedo tubes and a hanger running through out the ship meants for fighters or mass evacuations is just a nice little bonus.
So long as I get either an Intrepid Class or Defiant Class, I'll be happy.

My concern is this, if the ship I want most is actually the starter ship, will I be gimping myslef if I stick with it?

For me it has always been the Nebula-class ship. I have always loved the Merand-class and this seems to me to be the big brother. When I read the Wiki article on the nebula I really fell in love. The pod over the sauser section is interchangable depending on the mish you are running. And the wiki says that the sauser section can seperate. /sigh So I will start with the Meranda and hope to go straignt to the Nebula.

Possibly so. I remember at one point there was a discussion about ships tiers. You can keep that miranda forever and customize it as well, but it will never be as strong as ships in a higher tier that are customized for the same style of use.
I can't find the quote now though, so its possible I could be remembering that a bit off.

I love to see everyones feelings on there favourite vessel.
I think everyone has there own ideal ship for me it would have to be in Intrepid class ship as im such a Voyager Van, Although i can see the capabilities and benefits of every vessel.
Each and every ship has its good points for certain roles though and im sure many of us will have a few ships in our 'Garage' so to speak so when either a trickier or more specialised mission pops up, we can change between them which im sure is gonna be needed to happen at a few points in STO. Though im sure for the most part well be able to Tier up our favourite vessels.
Intrepids have not been confirmed though for STO and it looked like they had been made into smaller more streamlined but harder armoured Tahoe vessels by Perpeptual so i can still hope that Cryptic make Intrepids in the game. There not far from the Games timeline and there a main ship of a loved Star Trek series and Cryptic did say they would keep to Star Trek cannon as much as possible.

I love how there just HAS to be a rift between fans of the new movie, and fans of all the old Star Trek canon. I mean, it CAN'T possibly be true that fans of TOS would even think to watch the new movie, could it? Wait...I loved TOS, and everything else (well, besides DS9), and, wouldn't you know it, I loved the new movie! Weird...:D

I would never say that the Intrepid or Defiant are "pretty". The Defiant-class is my favorite Starfleet vessel, but I would never call it pretty. The Intrepid and Defiant are utilitarian and rugged, form follows function, they feel like what they are (a deep space exploration vessel and a warship, respectively). The Sovereign, on the other hand, is a very graceful and, indeed, beautiful starship. Now, that shouldn't be taken to meaning that the Sovereign is not a capable ship... it possesses the sort of grave and beauty that only a battleship or luxury liner may possess, while the Intrepid and Defiant are more frigate and submarine.
Anyway, I for one do not mind the Excalibur. She's a bit too pretty to be a workhorse and a bit too small to possess the dignified aire of the Galaxy and Sovereign. But I can definitely see the Enterprise of yore in her, and I cannot begrudge her that.

but if we got free reign of star trek ships i'd probably have an intrepid so that I could carry out science missions

yeah, the Excalibur class is OK. Kinda looks like the Galaxy and Sovereign class got their own room and later on figured out that they were both related to each other thanks to their daddy called Ambassador class (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Ambassador_class).
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that the Cryptic crew is coming up with new designs every two weeks, but when I look at websites such as http://www.sttff.net/starshipdatabase.html I start asking myself why those "fan" ships tend to look a lot better... just check out the Magellan or Insignia class on that aforementioned website and you'll see what I mean.

The ship I'm looking for is not available ... YET !
I might eventually end up with a Sovy ... but considering that is a capitol ship .. that is unlikely for quite a while. Soooo I'm trying to be realistic for a ship that is both versitle and has the resources that can be a good work horse until we can qualify for a capitol ship with serious fire power.
I know what the answer should be .. it's just not there yet.
Sooooo I'll just keep the faith until I see that dream come true !

Although i do like the Excalibur design that cryptic have made the PE one was more realistic. Also we have seen several Federation future ships and we know that they are leaning towards a "2D" design, so wy is Cryptic not sticking with it.

I think the Excalibur has the "sexiest" design since the Constitution refit (Note: The connie REFIT was first seen in Star Trek: The Motion Picture circa 1979). I understand that there is a good chance this won't be an 'endgame' vessel, though. If I HAD to give up the Excalibur, I'd go with...
The NX-91001. Has a Sovereign feel (my second favorite non-STO vessel to the Connie refit), and the payout is ridiculous!

True, but why? I mean you've had a clear development from the Constitution, to the refit, to the Excelsior or Ambassador class, which lead to Galaxy and the Sovereign later on.... it's like going from one car generation to another, in other words a natural progression. Showing us an Excalibur class is like coming out with a 2002 Ford Thunderbird... it's a nice retro, but there are so many more creative new cars out there.

Thank you! That's exactly the argument I've been waiting for (and for the fact that you didn't hate on me, lol).... if you take a look at different models and episodes which go into the future timeline of ST you will see the tendency of show designers to go with a flat-look approach, such as the Enterprise-J. Also by looking at the Galaxy vs Sovereign you will see that big move towards, as you'd call it, a more "2D" approach.
+++
All in all this Excalibur class reminds me of a PALADIN from Diablo II. Can throw some punches and is an even better support character. Can't necessarily heal you, but can give you enough passive bonuses to withstand a tough enemy force. I myself am still waiting for an updated of a Nebula-class starship.

You kinda shot yourself in the foot with this argument. If you look at the Progression of the Ford Mustang (http://picasaweb.google.com/jakejmorgan/UntitledAlbum#5347707393701345250) evolution photos 3 and 4 (1979-1993, 1994-2004) you will see that the vehicle changed substantially from photo 1 (1964-1973). In 2005, Ford released the fifth evolution to the Mustang model. "Mustang's styling echoes the fastback Mustangs of the late 1960s. Ford's senior vice president of design, J Mays, called it 'retro-futurism.'"* It was arguably the most well received 'evolution' of the Mustang line to date.

I considered that, JE, but then you look at something such as the Enterprise J - http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/USS_Enterprise_(NCC-1701-J) - and you come to realize that there is some sort of end goal. Granted, right now you've got the hype with the retro Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger, but not every company is following that bandwagon and to build up on the analogy... we already know what the next muscle car is going to look like even before they designed it.

True Devren. The Enterprise J (which I have to admit I'd love to see in action) seems to show a progression of Starfleet vessels to a more '2-d' design. It can be argued, however, that the auto industry has an 'end goal' of fuel efficient, hybrid automobiles. Why then would 'retro' designed muscle cars be in production? I guess my argument is, not everything is linear. There are tangents, people thinking outside the box, and because there is a trend to one design does not necessarily mean another would be completely abandoned. Perhaps Starfleet still sees use for such designs. My two cents :D

I've seen some analogies with the Excalibur and cars. It's not a car. It's a military/exploratory ship, not available to everyday citizens. Military hardware needs to be efficient, not cater to the nostalgia and vanity of potential buyers, since weapons producers are under contract and build equipment to performance specification, they don't need to advertise a product with a sleek retro-look. If it's an ugly hunk of junk, but is most efficient, its going to be contracted for production. There's a reason to try to draw out the lifespan of military equipment, but to have already exceeded that span, there's really no reason to dig up the old design again.
Things like the updated Raptor, and Excalibur just provide loopholes to get "canonical" ships into the game, when the presence of the original Raptor and Constitution wouldn't make sense.

I 100% agree but you have to remember this is a game, not a simulation, and part of the game is letting people captain ships they want to, whether it's cos it more powerful or more stylish, or for nostalgia's sake. Granted, like you said, it doesn't make sense from a military standpoint but as far as a star trek game goes it's important that they let us fly in the more iconic ships like the constitution (in the form of the excalibur).

While what you say is true from a military standpoint. It should be noted that, in my opinion, had the original Star Trek had a ship that was only efficient and not sleek and stylish it is highly doubtful that the series would have had the success or popularity it eventually gained. Were that the case there would not be this upcoming game to talk about. So from a game standpoint if sleek and retro looks help bring in players to make the game a success then I say they are vital.

ugh...the excalibur is just an attempt at pulling movie fans into the game. i refuse to fly it.
Actually, it is more about pulling in TOS fans than the movie. I myself, am VERY happy to see it's design introduced. Got to have my Conny somehow.

Excelsior a la Lakota fit.
I'm an artist, and sometimes the biggest or newest brushes are unnecessary.
I look forward to doing the impossible in a veritable classic.

Well i want, despite the inprobability, a KELVIN CLASS!!!!! PLEASE!!!!
Failing that i will probably go with an Intrepid Class or Something new.
Perhaps a Galaxy Class - like the ship but really hate the bridge interior - it looks like someone's lounge or something.

Actually there is yet one more possibility .. IF an updated class is used .. And YES this is yet another shamless plug to request the creation of a class simular to the Seawolf class that would make available a "Miranda based design" current with the rest of the late TNG designs and technology.
Are you shamelessly referring to this link? haha

Like the design, keep up the good work ;-)
I've seen some analogies with the Excalibur and cars.
I get your point, but yet in a way it supports the arguments JE and myself have been throwing at each other. Since it’s military, it doesn’t adhere to civilian PR, but there’s still this entire idea about knowing a little bit about what’s been produced in the 24th, 25th and 26th century… kinda gives away a certain line-of-designs that have been used over the years… Admit it, you just wanna have one of those new Ford Mustangs :-P
@ GorgeousGeorge – You’ve got a good point… by the end of the day it’s just a game… way to burst the bubble, geez…

By far my favourite ship is a D'deridex Warbird. I love their elegant but powerful style.
As they are going to be unavailable at launch, my favourite Federation ship is by far the Excelsior class.
It has a grace and beauty unmatched by any other ship. I for one would love to command one, but seeing as they're incredibly unlikely to be in STO, I guess my next favourite class of ship would be the Nebula.
I love the Nebula's style which looks clumsy and awkward compared to the sleek lines of some other ships and I think this gives it a charm all of it's own :D
For the Klingons, my favourite ship is the K'vort BoP.

I would certainly be a happy camper if the Excelsior was available. It's iconic of being a workhorse of the fleet.
