View Full Version : Landing planet-side

A major aspect of startrek is that sometimes the ships have to land planetside, and indeed the nova class vessel (which I saw in at least one image from the game) is designed to land for extended periods of time. So, will we be able to land our ships?
2nd, most every federation vessel comes with shuttle-craft, and the Nova class comes with an atmosphere-only ship called a wave-rider. (Dunno if that means it just runs about in the atmosphere or is capable of submersion in liquids like an ocean), will we have access to ship-board shuttle-craft and to other such vehicles?
edit: Actually, that's a nova class starship in the banner on this very site. The one infront of the planet, farthest back.

1) Don't count on it.
2) Though there will be situations where you'll need to use a shuttlecraft instead of a transporter to reach the surface of a planet, you cannot manually pilot it to make landfall.

I agree.
Basically such cases will likely be 'Transition cut scenes or screenshots'.

It's not designed to land for extendedd periods, but I think its master system displya does show landing gear like the Intrepid's. So, if there is a mission where you need to land, it would be neat to have your ship land if it's capable of doing so. Of course there needs to be a really good reason for landing when there are shuttles and transporters. Voyager landed twice, once because it had to land to do repairs and landing would make them easier, and a second time because shuttles were too weak to survive a particular world and transporters couldn't work there either.

It's be cool if you could take the Captain's Yacht for a spin.
Hmmm... Captain's Holiday Expansion Pack???

The captain's yacht was meant to be used in an episode of TNG but they could never work it into the story, and when they did I think they didn't have the budget. It's a somewhat silly idea considering how effective transporters are. The captain would only need the yacht if he were going someplace fancy or transporting someone fancy, but it would have to involve a place that can't be transported to or from or a people who refuse to use transporters.
Although, Picard using it in Insurrection wasn't bad considering how much he was moving and that he needed to get going without anyone noticing or anyone but himself getting in trouble.

Yeah, I agree. Picard had many opportunities to use his yacht for diplomatic missions, but instead he used shuttle pods.
And with Voyager, they could've used the Aeroshuttle instead of making the Delta Flyer. But Doug Drexler said that the big-wigs at Paramount wouldn't let them do that because of the Yacht scene in Insurrection. (Yeah, that was sure worth it).
Frankly, I don't know why they still bother putting them in if they aren't going to be used.

Yes it has been said that had game launch (and im thinking the first 6 months at anyrate) we may not get to do as many things as the game wants to let us do !
We wont have as many onboard areas to wander into and kit out and we wont have as many customisable parts and there wont be the other major races (cardassians and Romulans it is said will be in a possible expansion along with deeply upgraded game content etc)
So im thinking planet landings and shuttle launches may not be possible YET or at least you wont get to see them launched but you may get to jump right into the aftermaths of them i.e. youll appear on the ground but not see the ship or youll appear at a shuttle window but not see the shuttle kinda thing at first
