There has been alot of talk rcently that cryptic needs to step up the media content with things like ingame vide0s and basicly showing us abit more. here is one suggestion-

instead of the "ship of the line" articles which are good but a little dry, as wel as the background text we could have a 3D model of the ship done in HD as it is from the game. we could spin around, zoom in and see it in comparison with other ships to see the scale. you could still have all your facts and figures. its just a small thing but it would help getting people excited.

what you think?

First of all, there is no HD on computers models. HD only applies to broadcast media. Basically anything pre-recorded.

Second: as cool as that sounds, the bandwidth requirements would skyrocket, the server load would increase a quite a bit, and the time/money require to make it would be massive. PLUS you run the risk of people stealing the models.

So is it possible? Yes.
Is it economical? No.

Again, High Resolution models are just models. What makes them high or low is the polygon number, texture size, ect... which is usually taken from a High Quality model and scaled down for lower spec systems.

Now...
You can't make that complex of a model using a java browser or even flash. I'm sorry but that requires an advanced graphics engine and huge amounts of system resource.s You can have a rotating cube that flips through 180 pictures of a model, but having a full 3D model can only be done if you keep the polygon count fairly low. After all, your running it in a web browser.

And yes. I am happy with the media output. Instead of trying to buy us with flashy pictures, they're talking to us. The Ask cryptic, the "meet the developer", the Path to 2409, the IRC chats, ect....
Besides, PR needs to focus on Champions until it's released. Yes, the PR of the two projects is not the same person but the same department. And any company will tell you that you don't split a company's focus. When people hear Cryptic Studios, Cryptic wants them to think "Champions Online". In July, they'll want people to think "Star Trek Online". But never both at the same time.

What if they made their own high resolution models and made a video where they spin it around and go inside and what not, it isn't stolen, it doesn't take up much bandwith and all can enjoy.

You could, yes.
However it took a fair bit of effort to get us a single wallpaper. A video is far more time consuming.

I know we are all excited about the game. We have to keep in ming that Cryptic has better things to do than to give us toys to keep us occupied while they make the game. Distract yourselves with something else for a month or so. We will see more about the game then.

its been done before, homeworld 2 had this exact same feature. It was a downloadable program, that had several ships in it. The ship models could be maipulated along all 3 axis so u could see the ship from any angle. the viewer was a client side program so there was no need for extra bandwith.

Again, it can be done, but it takes time and money.
And for 3 models, is it really worth it?

Well if they want to sell this game I would have to say yeah they need to start doing more to amp up the hype as I know my friends and other people in real life have lost interest in this game and after last weeks E3 event I'm starting to look forward to other games in the pipeline. Text is cheap, a photograph is worth a thousand words.

They can't sell the game until it's out. And even then it's going to be a while yet.
AND they have Champions Online to promote first.
One product per company for promotion, unless your blizzard and can pull 3 projects at once to promote because your that awesome.

LOL. Cryptic needs a separate forum category called "Prerelease Eye Candy Demands and EVE Comparisons"

True they can't sell this game for monetary cold hard cash, but I'm sure they can do a better job at selling this game as "hey this is gonna be the game you'll be playing in 2010" idea. As for the idea that you need to be the size of blizz to have more then one projects and only promote one is silly, other company ie. bioware, netdevil, can pull it off and I think cryptic can too. I just hope when cryptic gets more of the game worked out, that they show us what this game has to offer over its competition. Because I definitely want to be playing this game in 2010 :) but I'll most likely be playing what my friends are playing.
