Is anyone else worried about this, we all know this is going to be lower quality then that of original content, dont get me wrong I have actually come to see the merit especially in end game content where you will have the freedom to literally explore space.
My main question here is just how much original content is there going to be e.g. will i be able to play the game without having to use this random content generator??
At game launch what percentage of the game will be "fixed" design from Cryptic 80% 90%??
dont get me wrong I am looking froward to this genesis program but if it turns out the same as the CoH i know this game is going to be spoiled for me.
Will others be able to visit these places I go to?
will it contain space episodes???
If anyone knows the answers to any of these it would be much appreciated, or if a dev could pop in and clear some things up.

Sounds like a mix of both. So there will indeed be fixed elements...as well as randomly generated material. I feel your concerns and also hope it is done well. At the same time I am pleased players may get to experience "unique" events...as long as they are not akin to lame random generated maps inside static doors I will be happy.
I suppose we will have to wait to see for sure...like you I sincerely hope it is done well.

I imagine any of the well known planets will be made up by the Cryptic team. Planets like Earth, Vulcan, Andoria, Tellar Prime, Qo'nos, Cardassia Prime, Ferenginar, etc.

Im sure once the game gets released and feedback fromt he players starts flooding in (not to mention the BETA) they will be able to find a good balance that everyone can live with and appreciate.
While the aspect of knowing you are the first to claim this planet is a great feeling, I would like to establish a base and mining Ops to start to help otu my faction..which is hard ot do if it dissapeaers forever...
I trust the Dev at Cryptic to deliver as this game will ahve so many elements you just gotta love em all even if they arnt 100% what *YOU* expected them to be.
Like the BORG we will ADDAPT!!!

Someone who has the same thought Patterns as me!!! and probably everyone!! thank you!!!
I only think the player made race planets will be generated by the Genesis device, and even then they're unlikely to have as many important and story building quests as regular planets, I get the feeling it'll be something like Grind quests on those planets, although I do hope not!

I am not worried about the Content Generator... and we don't know how good it is... saying Just because it is a Computer Programm that's doing the work doesn't mean it will be bad... (thinking of the Armada 2 Random Map Generator, this thing just rocks!)
Of course a Hand made one will always be a bit better but it will take weeks and such for it... here you'll have an Hour or less with fantastic results...

The system sounds interesting. Given their example, it doesn't sound like a computer generated scenario, but a system to allow the devs to hand make a scenario in much shorter time, by simply selecting parameters from a check list.
From the article;
Describing what you want in real terms is the key to the Genesis System in Star Trek Online.
Give me an M class planet with a Federation complex set up in the mountains where some scientists are milling about ...
Now add a bunch of Klingons attacking the complex
... Oh, and make sure the Klingons brought some Targs!
Now make sure one of the Klingons is a badass Dahar master
And how about a really funny looking Ferengi running around screaming!
It seems to me that what they are describing is a Dev sitting at a computer, filling out a check list to determine the environment, buildings, NPCs, NPC behavior, etc...
So the scenario will be crafted by a human, the parameters set by a human, but the graphics and art work randomly selected by a computer from an available pool of options, or randomly generated terrain / NPCs. This way the devs don't have to hand make everything.
They can make a collection of standard buildings and equipment and let the computer randomly pick out 10-15 options from a pool and call it a base.
Telling it to make a Federation scientist might just trigger a program to go into the character creator and randomly select some face options, slap that face on some random melon, stick it onto a body in a lab coat and viola, NPC.
Terrain would also be easy to throw together, I'm sure there are many different random terrain generators out there that can be emulated, copied, or they could write one from scratch.
The end result would be each place a player "discovers" will be randomly generated by the computer based on a framework of requirements set by a human. So we may not see any 100% computer generated content, but the computer may be doing much of the leg work to create we see.

I hope you don't expect them to make all of the planets by hand. A program like this is a very good solution and I can't wait to see what it has achieved on release.
