Is anyone else worried that STO will not be able to bring in many non trekkies? i mean we do kind of have to face it. most people who arent trekkies frown upon star trek. i dont even know why myself but they do. and on top of it all the new star wars mmo is prolly being released at the same time. at this point i think its gonna take more than a movie to bring in players.

I have some of those worries occasionally. This game can't rely on Trekkies, or even Trekkers. It needs to attract mmoers. People that play mmos and have an awareness of Star Trek, but aren't really "fans" per se. So I worry sometimes that the mistakes I've seen happen with quite a few other games will happen again with STO. That mistake being the company making the game listening too much to the "fans" that want to constrict the game too much in adherence to their personal views of the IP (and another special interest group that I won't get into here), thereby not making it a fun enough game to play for enough people, and not doing the things needed to give it some long term viability with a wider base.
Some people say they're fine with the game being small population wise, but in the end having too few people playing the game will hurt it a great deal. people need to be able to compromise for the greater good, as it were.

It's funny you brought this up, in my secondary/high school i was a member of the school paper. Every week we had a word contest so to speak, where a word would be put on the page and we'd get replies to what is the first thing you think of when you see the word.
One week it was of course "Star Trek" and guess what 87% of the school chose for the word to represent it. NERD!
For some reason, if you like Star Trek you seem to be automtically labelled a nerd.

With the loss of Tabula Rasa and soon Matrix Online I believe that fellow sci-fi gamers will be looking for a new home. And they may come here with the ability to customize your starship and yourself and beam down on other planets, as well as see the interior of your ship. We may even attract some of the Eve crowd. Is it Star Trek? Sure, but with so much to do and so many places to go and so much to see we may even get some people we didn't expect. Even some die hard WoW players I know are getting bored. STO may be the new thing that attracts the players who are bored with the same old. So I am sure that we will be fine and STO will be around for years to come.

To sum up thread :
*PANIC!*
Really, if i wanted to worry I'd wait at least a couple months into beta or right before release -- We won't know how people feel about it until then, so might as well hope for the best =)

I think the new movie and the new direction for the series will make STO far more acceptable to non-trekkies than it would have otherwise been. I think that this will be a successful and profitable MMO for some time to come even if it sticks to the normal fan base.
That said, I think that Cryptic could do more to sell the game to non-Trekkies as release nears, including more flashy video and media a la SWTOR.

Were you thinking of EVE Online, perhaps?
As for the OP, I'm not very worried at all. There is a large number of Trekkies out there, and that number is now growing thanks to the new movie.
Aside from that, this game seems to be getting quite much attention from both MMO and traditional gamers alike. And let's not forget that there is only one other MMO out there that provides a space based world to play in. Many people keep trying it but can't get themselves to enjoy it (I'm not trying to bash EVE here, I'm just saying it is a love it or hate it game, and most people seem to feel the latter.) which tells me that there is a great interest in an enjoyable space based MMO, so STO is just what the doctor ordered.
I think STO will be a success, as long as it doesn't land flat on it's face initially for one technical reason or another. But I don't foresee that to be a problem...

I'm not worried.
This is why:
Cryptic is one of the few companies that I've seen that is attempting to release a game that covers multi-faceted aspects revolving around several different dimensions of entertainment. There is several different layers to this game, each of which will entertain a player on some fundamental level.
There's the element of the vastness of space to explore, coupled with the excitement of combat (both in-space and on the ground). There's the element of storyline, discovery, and advancement. There is the tactical elements, as well as the diplomatic elements. There are planets to walk on, and ships (at a later date). There are endless customizable features, and even newer features to enhance the experience for people of all ages.
STO will cater to those that wanted these elements in other games, like SWG, EvE, Earth and Beyond, Anarcy Online, Tabula Rasa, but were shot down because of various reasons. Not to mention the long line of franchises that already highlight some successes that others have played and loved. Bridge Commander, The Star Trek: Academy Series, Star Trek Starship Creator, Elite Force, Armada I and II, etc. Each of these games has contained elements that everyone at one point or another said to themselves...why can't they blend these into one? Well... now they are. And I think you're going to see a massive exodus from other games where players have migrated simply out of boredom to find something to keep them busy.
I think once people get a sense and feel for what this game offers, and the unlimited potential it has, they are going to be rioting at the gates to get in.
I have no illusions that the game will start small. But I also know that starting small is a good thing. And as word spreads, people will deffinately start to come from other IP's to check it out and give it a try. I highly suspect that with the multi-dimensional approach that Cryptic is taking will set the new standard for games out there. And that many other companies will need to re-think how MMO's of the future will shape the gaming community, with depth, story, interaction, etc.

There is quite a lot of hype about this game atm. I think many people will try it at launch, who remains after 30 days depends largely on the game itself.

My first concern is the quality, some recent products made to carry the Star Trek name have given me the impression that the folks who own the franchise saw Star Trek as just a cash teat to be milked when some extra money is needed for their other projects.
