I have seen alot of posts as to why this game is going ot suck or be bad so I wanted to start my own thread as to why I think this game is going to "ROCK." So here goes.

1. There Is going to be zoaned PVP.
I know there are a lot of fans of EVE and love the open PVP enviroment but I really love the system that was in COX. In EVE if your ship is not uber or you do not have uber skills your butt gets handed to you in low sec. Which is fine, the only problem I have with this is that while new there are other areas you can't get to w/o going through low sec. There is a lot of content you miss out on because you cant travel to the areas. Here you get to experience all the content that you want and can still go to PVP and have fun if you want. Win, Win.

2. Episode driven Mishes.
You get to experience your own episodes with your own crew. Which you will be able to get in a number of ways. One of the things I will love is opening my "comm" and searching the database for mishes. Then when I am finished not have to go back to "finish" my task. Just open the "comm" again and complete the task and select a new one. I feel that traveling back to contacts is the bigest wastes of time in a MMO. Especially when you have a ship... with a comm.

3. The ever expanding universe.
I know that some say the this is going to be lame, but I am most excited about this. How many times have we played games and seen the same recyled maps with different colors? Space is suppose to be big and vast. They say that there will be a program running that "generates" new space all the time. I believe Craig Z said that they are working on the peramaters of how it generates that content so it will be fun. There will still be static things that everyone will be able to find. And who knows? Once it is generated mabey it will become static. But to be an explorer and do be the first person to see the star, or nubela, or planet. Knowing that no one else has set there eyes on it is really exciting to me.

4. You will able to leave your ship.
There is both the space side to the game and the ground side. You will be able to explore the surface of new planets. Even try to convince them to join your cause. Recruit them for starfleet and even your crew. Sounds really exciting to me. When you get tired of being in your ship you can disembark and explore planets.

5. Potential
It is Trek and Cryptic it doing it. There is an huge potential for growth once the game launches. More factions will be added more content and I'm sure even more ships. They could still add in the ability for your friends to play your bridge crew. The point being the game we get at launch will pale in comparrison to what it will be as it growes. And it is this growth potential that excites me.

Anyway these are some of the reasons why I feel that this game will rock. Feel free to add your own. If you feel the game is going to go badly please post your comments at one of the other many other threads along thoes lines. I would please like to keep this thread about why the game will be good. Thank you for your time and thank you for reading. I look foward to seeing you all in game :)

Why I think STO "IS" going to be fun.
It's Star Trek. Do you need another reason?

The simple fact that Star Trek has a HUGE fan base is reason enough for this game to rock. If all the trekkers play this game, along with all the curious online gamers this game will have a population that could easily rival World of warcraft. I'm honestly curious to see how much WoW's population is going to convert to STO.

I think the new movie will bring in alot of them as well.

I hope it will rock. Whether it will or not remains to be seen. We have been fooled with hype in the past.

I don't think WoW will have much to fear but I do think STO is going to be my kind of fun, perhaps moreso than any MMO I've played yet.

1) Pets. The NPC crew aspect is going to be right up my alley. I love my squad based singleplayer games and my Merc MasterMind in CoV is far and away one of the most fun to play, in game terms, characters I've got anywhere. My crusty ship's captain in SWG is for very inexplicable reasons a beastmaster (well, OOC, I love my pets). I enjoy some old party-based CRPGs too.

2) Customization. My character, my crew, my ship. My experience on my terms. That's how OddjobXL likes it.

3) Great Setting. I'm no Trekker but I do love a rich setting for roleplaying. You have so many options and nuances to work with.

4) Dynamic PvE content. Both Competitive PvE in the Neutral Zone and procedurally generated Exploration content is, hopefully, going to scratch an itch no other MMO's come close to pulling off. Intellectually, creatively, this is the single most exciting aspect of the design. It's also probably going to be the hardest one to pull off convincingly.

5) Variety. Space and ground content. PvE and optional PvP content. The possibility for a very unique market/crafting system based around Engineering, invention and requisition. Non-combat oriented solutions to problems including science and diplomacy.

6) Community. I'm pretty impressed with most of the folks here. Hopefully the game lives up to what they're looking for at least in part. I'm hoping for fewer alt slots and a more stately pace to the gameplay than CoH so we can really all get to know each other online in a way that feels unforced and natural. But we'll see what we see. One thing I'm certain of is a very powerful roleplaying contingent made up of fans of the setting and roleplayers looking for a cozy, paranoia free, sci-fi gaming environment.

No large fanbase can save a badly made game, which is why RemyBlack is pointing out the gameplay elements. But given that Cryptic are actually forced to go and watch the series, and they have all the people expecting something from them, they're under a lot of pressure.

I'm a bit suspicious of combat controls at the moment. The typical MMO pseudo-turn-based system isn't really what I consider a fun combat system, and the STO system is still a bit unclear.

How many trekkies ARE out there? Approximately?

They say that there will be a program running that "generates" new space all the time. Interesting, this is exactly what Infinity: The Quest for Earth is doing.

At this point it is impossible to tell how STO will turn out. We have very little concrete information about how fun gameplay is. Just the fact that it is a star trek game, does not mean it will be fun.

To a true Trek fan, ALL Star Trek is fun, no matter how bad. Go watch Star Trek III and tell me you didn't have fun. :p

STO will be fun if it not dumbed down so much that I get bored after 2 months and quit cause everyone is at the end game already with maxed out skills and everyone has everything already. There are enough cookie cutter games out there that most wanted dumbed down and they considered it fun till they quit the game after 3 months then whine about having nothing to do cause they didnt want a realistic more complex game that required them to think a bit and have a little more diversity in the game instead of everyone being the same . I consider MMOs that are fun that go for the long term player in mind instead of the same instant gratification spew that has been released in the last 4-5 years make it a challenge to skill up make certian areas of space unreachable to others unless they want to risk thier ships, its these things that make a game challenging but fun.

If everything is available to everyone the games loses its appeal after playing for a while, make it a risk vs. reward game in parts of space, why should PVP be zoned? so can we zone PVE also? people that are biased against PVP have never really even tried it or just cry in fear of others horrors stories about PVP. Plus most of the MMO population has never played a true PVP MMO anyway so most have no clue what their talking about, I've played more of the classic MMOs like Ultima Online, Asherons Call, Anarchy Online, EVE Online , and more recently (currently playing Darkfall) I know a little of challenge and risk vs reward , never risk what u dont want to lose, travel in groups, learn to play smart , adjust ur tactics accordingly, that is what makes games offering more of a complex and skill based system more worth playing and keep me playing for years upon end instead of months.

Make this game appeal for all playstyles not just one.. that is the key to success

that's what they did with spore and it worked, so why not use a system that works and expands the game it's self without the devs having to put hours in and only do a fraction of the work.
