View Full Version : Active Evasion

One thing that really, REALLY annoys me about other MMOs is how you can run away from an attack an still be hit by it. I think that you should only be hit by an attack if it is within meters of you. This game should allow you to fully evade enemy attacks. This would require you to put more power to enignes to evade. This SHIP-BASED game ashould let you evade.

I am not sure what you are asking. What you ar experiencing may be caused by latency; the server thinks you are in a different place that your client for example.

This is one thing that bugged me about Eve, there was no point in darting around trying to evade shots that always hit you no matter how many times your changed direction. It would be interesting to hear how this will work in STO. You could use the fact that if your target keeps moving in the same direction you get a % increase in your chance to hit the target.

The engine is capable of collision detection. Supposedly we can stop incoming projectiles by ducking behind asteroids and other objects. I'm not sure if this means other PCs too, but I really hope it does. That would really add to the tactical gameplay aspect.

Most MMOs try to avoid much twitch though. They opt for Dice rolls due to lag and other considerations like ease of use. Personally, Like the more twitch based style where skill is involved, but you have skills that help or hurt you. I really hope STO gets away from pure dice roll mechanics.

Nooooo.

I'm talking about when you run away froma fireball and it follows you.
Torpedoes can home in, phasers cannot.

Torpedoes can miss. I'm not sure if they'll do that. Phasers are normally always on target.

If you mean on an away party, you see it lots in the movies, but I'm not sure if you can dodge a beam traveling at the speed of light in real life.

In my opinion, I think it is unlikely you would be able to move a 'battleship' size object to 'evade/dodge' FTL weapons targeted by 25th Century Technology.

We are not 'fighter planes' dodging 'dumb weapons' of WWII, but rather we are Giant ships being targeted by super computers and super intelligent weapons.

The only way you would be able to 'evade' is if you jumped to warp, and even that would be a rare feat to pull off.

I think your right, dodging is not really star trek like. In smaller ships maybe, but phasers and torpedoes travel really fast.

I think avoiding torpedoes should be possible, certainly for smaller ships.. but it should be very hard to pull off. It would add to the excitement, I think. As has been said, it would be great if you could dodge behind asteroids to evade a torpedo (and hopefully PC's can intercept attacks and take a hit for the ship under attack if they so wished).

I can't imagine dodgind phasers really, but every time I think of it I think of DS9 :o

Star Trek 5. It can be done.

Warp speed NOW!

Complicated but try to follow:

A large ship will take longer to get up to a "get away speed" than a small ship, but eventually the large ship will be able to outrun the small ship.

A small ship can get away quicker and dodge better but they are limited to the number and strength of their weapons and shields. Eventually the large ship can catch up to them.

On an equal match, if you are outgunned (say that you have previous damage and have to fight again) and you try to run away, the speeds and distances will all depend on the reflex times and warp capabilities of both ships. If you are firing while in warp, the projectiles are still moving faster than your ship speed. So warping will do no good.

These scenarios are constant in space games, in the pictures, and on other MMO's currently using large vs small ships.

The challenge will be to you, your ship, and your crews abilities to win these battles.

Torpedoes home in as seen in the STO trailer. Phasers are in a straight line as is Disruptors. Planets and asteroids will deflect line of sight weapons but torpedoes is fire and forget, so if they are on your tail they will remain on your tail around planets and asteroids.

Oh I see you are refering to dodging seeking weapons, such as a fighter plane evading a missile.

If this is in the game, it will be something abstract like "missile defense" as it would otherwise be complex to implement.

What I expect to see is 2 types of Firing:

Target Lock -- Which will normally result in a Hit.
Non-Lock firing -- this is firing without a target lock, and subject to missing, etc

Evasive maneuvers, ECM, etc will probably affect both types (trying to break the lock, and simply making it harder to hit without a lock).

However, I don't think our 'movement' should be a factor -- I don't think that you should be able to manually 'jump' out of the way, etc. Evasion should be calculated by the computer, not the imput device, imo.

According to some of the interviews, I believe they said that smaller ships (like the Defiant) can fishtail and weave. So hopefully, we'll see something like that.
