I am unfamiliar with the account management practices from Cryptic's other MMO games and am interested in if there is likely to be an option to split characters from one account to another.
Essentially I intend to play STO when it comes out, and let my step son (and probably step daughter too) play on my account to see if they like it. If they do, I'd be getting them their own accounts so we can play together but it would be nice if either they (or me) didn't have to start a fresh character and play catch up.
Anyone know if this is likely to be a feature?

No way of knowing for sure. I am guessing that if this is offered that you can only exchange characters between accounts that you own.
More likely, you will not be able to do this at all. There will probably be a trial for people that do not want to purchase the game without trying it.

I don't see it being a problem. I know Blizzard has the account character transfer. I understand from your point of view on it Lalaith. It would be nice to have such a feature because I'm currently trying to haggle my little brother in to playing this with me and my wife. I know a lot of games that I've seen the MMO doesn't get like a 14 Day trial or any trial unless you buy the 50 dollar box when it comes out. A few of the MMO's I've played didn't put up Trials you could get though the internet until like 6 months to a year after it has launched But we can hope that STO has a trial out right when it launches. But we shall see when the time comes.

Another option would be to give them trial passes. Many games offer these with Collectors Edition packages and some offer them just with regular purchases. Usually these trial accounts last for 7 days or so. The good thing about them is they are totally separate from your account so if they decide to keep playing, they can keep everything on the trial account.
I'm not sure if STO will offer this, but IMO it's a great way to promote word of mouth.
