I think currently there are just the Starfleet and Klingon groups, are there plans to include the Romulans and others? I know we could make them, but after reading the in-universe story I have to say I am interested in playing a Romulan. Any word on how that might go down? I probably getting the game anyway, but if Romulans are involved I'll be that much more excited.

Definitely an option for expansion down the road but don't count on it from what I have gathered

The game will have romulans, but not as a playable race at launch. They might include them as a playable race in an expansion some time after the game goes live.

They have stated they would like to have Romulans as a playable race in the future. Most speculate that will happen in the first expansion.

As an additional item; they have also said that they would like to have it so that you can switch your characters over to a new faction (such as the Romulans) when they become available. Nothing was mentioned of what would happen to your ships, fleet, starbases, or shipyards if you did switch.

Cryptic has made statements that Romulans and other factions will be added post-launch, but they haven't said who, or when. I really believe that they are going to add Romulans, but I doubt that they will be independent due to the fact that more people will side with the federation then you have klingons then romulans, so they'd probably link them as a side faction of either the federation or klingons, most likely the federation due to the treaty between them is the only thing keeping star fleet from useing cloaks, meaning that if klingons and romulans were working together then that means that the romulans are at war with the federation, striking that treaty void and people would want to have cloaks on their federation ships. Now I like you would love to be romulan, they would probably have better cloaking systems then the klingons and I would consider giving up the klingons if they do in fact side them with the federation, but I most likely wouldn't because that would mean I would be on the same team as the federation which, I don't agree with. Don't get me wrong, the federation is nice and they help a lot of people, but they view fighting as a last resort where romulans, and klingons especially, hold it as the secound option (first in some situations). Long story short, when the game comes out, I'm going to be with the Klingon Empire, and once they release the Romulan Star Empire, if they are in fact sided with the federation, then I won't even consider it unless their is substantial differences in the cloaking systems, but if they stand alone i'll consider it and do more research (assuming i'm not already conformed to the Klingon way, because I do strongly believe and follow their honor code), and if they are sided with the Klingon Empire (which I really hope they are) I'd join them in a heartbeat depending on how hard I had worked on my klingon ship.
Having said this, I really would like Cryptic to put Romulans in against the federation because, although I do like the Klingons because their always armed to the teeth, I don't like that they're obligated to see every fight to the end, and (assuming Cryptic does as they say and puts in system upgrades) with a little weapon modifications and upgrades to a Romulan Warbird, and they'll be armed to the teeth just like a Klingon.
