View Full Version : Did the new movie bring you here?

I was a huge fan of Star Trek growing up. I fell in love with TNG, which lead me all the way back to the TOS.

While I was never a huge fan of the original TOS TV show, the TOS movies are still the fondest memories i have of Star Trek. That and the line "I am Locutus of Borg" is still vividly etched in my memory.

I remember hearing about STO way back when, but by then my interest in Star Trek had dwindled down to several boxes of action figures in my parents attic, that was all that was left of my childhood with Star Trek. That is until last Friday when I saw the new movie.

Sure, it has its flaws, but it is most definitely what brought me here and reignited my fire for all things Trek. What was once a feeling of "Meh, I'll check out STO when it launches" is now a rabid "I must be a member of Starfleet ASAP".

Anyone else here because of the new movie?

Yes, before I saw the new movie, I dismissed Star Trek as being some dumb geeky SF thing....the movie of course changed my mind, and now im here, though when I first heard of this game, I had hoped it would be a little closer to release than it is now. I just hope this game turns out to be great, I currently play Warhammer Online, and then SWTOR is gonna be coming out in 2010...Star Trek online will have to turn out to be really good to steal me away from Warhammer and SWTOR...or perhaps SWTOR will turn out to be crap, but I find that doubtful.

It's cool to see so many new people showing interest in Star Trek now.

I think it worked, Paramount. :)

I had proof but my dog ate it.

While that's a good question, I wonder how many people acually liked Star Trek before the new movie. I know I did, I grew up with TOS, and I have been a fan ever since.

I grew up on Star Trek, as well. It was probably the first thing I really got into as a child, other than Legos. I remember eagerly anticipating the new series premiere of TNG. :D

Yeah, I remember when TNG came out too. I had my doubts because I loved the TOS characters too much, but I watched it, and liked it. Although it could never replace TOS for me.

Did the movie bring me here? No, i've grown up watching TNG and VOY (never got into DS9 ). I did run accross the character creator on Youtube, which lead me here. I know there was a game comming out, just no website :p

I haven't seen the new movie. Don't get to the theatre often. Usually just hit the video store and check stuff out once in a while.

Grew up with the original series. Had some Mego action figures and the Gallileo shuttlecraft and Mr. Spock models.
TNG came along and it was good, but it never seemed to really capture me like the original series, and my interest tailed off as the series went along. Subsequent series interested me less and less.

But I was always a fan. When I was given the opportunity to be an extra in Star Trek IV, I was all over it. When I was offered a job to subcontract for Fleer at the "One Weekend on Earth" anniversary convention, I never thought about saying "no".

Maybe the new movie will launch a franchise full of the fun stuff with less of the stuff I am not such a big fan of.

I grew up with TNG and quickly lost interest with the advent of DS9 and voyager, but the new movie indeed rekindled the Trek flame in me. In fact, I enjoyed it so thoroughly that it inspired me to go back and watch TOS and the classic movies for the first time.

I hate how so many people curse the new film for "erasing" and "destroying" all that comprises classic Trek; on the contrary, for people like me it actually caused new appreciation for the original material. If it weren't for the quality of the new film (just my opinion, don't hate), I would never have gotten around to watching the 60's series and KHAAAANNN!

But, that's just me.

I have been here for quite some time though I never posted. My friend from another game is a huge Trekkie and at the time was dragging me into playing it. Since then I have been watching as much Star Trek as I could get the time to watch. Granted, the new movie has also played a part in making me want to play. I work at a theater and since its release I have seen the movie 14 times now.

So to answer the question...yes and no. I actually want an MMO I am familiar with and Star Trek seems to have everything I want in an MMO.

No I watched TOS on TV growing up on reruns 5 days a week during the 70's. So that's how I got to know the show, & the 1st movie in 78 started a love affair with SciFi.

I was around in the Perpetual days, then due to having chilldren ended up lurking every now and again on this site. If anything it was TOS that made me join and not the new movie.

Nah, not because of the movie. Been following Star Trek for ages but only watched the series recently (DS9, Enterprise...). I can always remember growing up with TOS movies and TNG (Late 80s, early 90s).

Perhaps why Trek popularity sort of dwindled was because most of the younger generation prefer.... more action oriented stuff. Which may explain why many people go for Star Wars instead (lightsabers and stuff which is also cool). But Trek's strength has always been in their characters.

I got onto the forums because my spark for Star Trek was lit again because i am rewatching DS9 after a long time. These forums actually made me see the new Trek film.

Not me either, Seen all the episodes of all the seasons, lost some interest during the last few years though. The star trek series out now is terrible. Anyways liked the new movie, I would say it has renewed some interest though. --made me more excited for STO.

I had heard about an Star Trek MMO ages ago, but never really gave it much thought because at the time I wasn't really in to MMOs.

I came across this site about a month ago, was looking for pictures to help me draw my Trek inspired uniform, checked out the media sign up, and I've been bugging you lot ever since.

Yes, the movie is what led me here. I used to watch TOS with my dad like 10 years ago when it would play at 11 PM, only because we would wait for my mom to get back from work at around 11:30. I used to see TNG too, and always wanted a model replica of the Enterprise. I wasn't too interested in seeing the movie, but my friend was gonna see it, so I decided to go with. Man, what a mistake it would've been had I missed it. It sparked my interest. Now, I MUST play STO!

The movie didn't really bring me here, but it definitely made me throw off my misgivings about trek and start becoming a fan. Known about STO for quite a while, though.

I've been a fan of the shows long before the new movie. But I did think the new movie was good and hope that it gains a few fans in the process.
