I know we dont know much except what has been put out, but I was just curious if anyone had any ideas or insight about this question.

When were on the ship can we stay in a 3rd person view most of the time?

From the sound of it, when were in the sector map we will see the oustide of the ship, I would much rather stay on the bridge and see the bridge, if i want to see space, Ill flip on the viewscreen.

Will combat be from outside of the ship view?

I would much rather be on the bridge telling my tactical officer what to do, and giving out orders to the staff.

Anyone else have any insight on this?

you will only be able to control your ship from the 3rd person view. you will not be able to see the bridge. there are no player ship interiors in this game. you control your ship, and click the fire phasers button

all this is subject to change once the game comes out. the devs have said they are going to try to get some interiors in asap.

For now, it's 3rd person. You'll see your ship from behind, like in most of the screenshots. Who's to say if they'll add that Bridge Commander style view later on, however. But for launch, 3rd person, though I assume you can simulate first-person point of view by zooming the camera right in.

simulate first-person point of view by zooming the camera right in.

i would not suggest doing this. as in every mmo, it severely limits your Point of View and will probably get very annoying very quickly.

Being in first person mode would defentally limit your ability to be effective in combat. In third person view you can at least see where your enemy is at all times and if they are on your left or right sides, top or bottom. Being on the bridge and just saying "blow them up" or "take out their phasers" might be a bit dull for the player.

In one of the blogs, Craig said they tried this and found that it was impractical and frustrating in combat.

So no, not at this time. Maybe when they implement full player ship interiors you can, but not until.

I find it very difficult to move a ship around efficiently from a cockpit view. I've tried it in JTL and I just don't enjoy the experience when rapid movement (i.e. a battle) is required. I do hope to see multicrew ships one day even if only in instanced missions, in those cases I would probably still want to fly the ship from an external view though other jobs might be done just as well from a bridge view.

I dont know, I guess I didnt expect to be piloting the ship, I thought that was the helmsmans job. I want to give the order where to go, the helmsman will have all the training and know what the safe distances are to whatever object I want him to go to.

Details are very important but I dont want to get bogged down with piloting a ship when I will have duties as a Captain of the ship to attend to, like reviewing the latest Engineering department efficiency reports and seeing how the Security department did on there response drills. Hehe.

Unfortunately I think all that is going to be more conceptualized than acutal activity. I think you will be moving the ship around yourself but we'll see.

I agree that space combat is best in 3rd person view of the ship.
However I won't be completely satisfied with the game if I can't ever see the inside of my ship, I was kinda counting on it for roleplay and stuff.

3-6 months post launch, assuming no critical bugs need working on.

Well the good news is that the development team at Cryptic seem to know that and say they want to add personalized ship interiors to the game, but that won't be until after the game launches.

There is no time table for ship interiors. This is a good marketing decision because if they said something like "3-6 months after launch" and didnt get it done by then, they would be in hot soup.

I'm not even asking for customizable interiors, just enough to walk around in and invite people, not just the bridge tho, I'm talking the whole ship. But if they intend to add customizable content then it's pretty cool too. I guess that's probably the reason they're setting this back, time needed to add such content.

That is what they have said, that they want to do the interiors right which is why they aren't doing them for the initial release becaus there wouldn't be time to do what they want to do. We'll have to wait and see what happens though. They are saying the right things about it at any rate.
