Will you only really be able to play the game in space with a fleet, or can you play on land, without a fleet? And has there been any mention of 1 person ships being avalible? Or is it majorly space oriented, and planets are mostly uninhabited?

Or do we not know yet?

THe majority of the game will take place in space, because that is where most of star trek is based. But you do not have to do it with a fleet.

You will be playing in both land (or in the interior of starbases/ships) and space. The episodic mission based content will have ground and space about 50/50, though travel will probably be mostly space. Either can be done with or without a fleet. Fleet just means a guild or social network (and perhaps a few more cool things). But really, fleets aren't necessary at all.

It seems as if most of the planets are inhabited with a huge (perhaps 'limitless') number of species to find.

EDIT, here's a good thread with a lot of good info from various sources:

You will not need a fleet (guild) for all or even most aspects of gameplay, as you should have a wide variety of solo content available. That said, fleets do generally help for group content and large-scale battles likely at end game.

They have said they want the game to take place roughly 50% on your ship, and 50% on the ground in various planets, space stations, etc.

1 person ships would be more like a shuttle, so you won't really have a lot or any instances of just 1 person on a ship. How would you even run a regular ship with just one person? You'd need a crew for even the smallest starting cruiser class ship.

As for if planets will be inhabited or not, who knows. They will be plenty of inhabited planets, and plenty of uninhabited planets. They have plans to have procedurally generated planets and star systems, so you should always have new areas of space to explore that nobody has seen before and be able to explore new planets and species. You will also have the options to make contact and add them to your crew if they become friendly.

There will definitely be 1-player ships available at the start of the game, and you'll be usin' them a-plenty to go explore strange new worlds and extreme depths of space.

Either can be done with or without a fleet. Fleet just means a guild or social network (and perhaps a few more cool things). But really, fleets aren't necessary at all.

Just a side-note: as far as I know, it's not that Fleets "aren't really necessary," it's really that they don't become important until later in the game, when you want larger starships that require more than one non-NPC to procure - to completely ignore fleets is to confine yourself to a "glass ceiling" of starship promotion!

Unless fleets are the only means by which you can access certain cool things. :o

says the guy in a fleet.

honestly, ive played games without a guild. it gets boring. Fast. having people to talk to every day makes the game much more enjoyable.

You will fly solo or in fleets, fleets are guilds. Like players traveling withy other players that are connected in a guild. Players who slyu together that are not guilded are in packs. Termed squadron or a group of ships. I think later they make have Ships and NPC pets too, allowing you to make your own little fleet or pack..
